The earliest records are chronicles of foreign travelers: Ulrico Schmidel and Luis de Tejeda I and Esteban de Luca . There appeared the first outlines of gauchesca Hilario Ascasubi and Estanislao del Campo , a native genre reaching its peak with , by , which is representative of national feeling and spirit. Rulfo: The Sound of Death By Angie Galicia
asks Juan Rulfo through the voice of Doa Eduviges in his masterpiece Pedro Pramo If your answer is no, prepare yourself. Awaken your imagination and read the following: A constant buzz without rhyme or reason, similar to that which is made by the wind rustling the branches of a tree in the night, when neither the tree nor the branches can be seen though their whispers can be heard. Originally from Sayula Jalisco Juan Rulfo began working at a young age in the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. Later, all the things he experienced on these trips were captured in his only two brief literary works: a compilation of short stories called El llano en llamas , and his novel Pedro Pramo , a masterpiece of Mexican literature. In spite of the brevity of his works, Rulfo earned a privileged position not only in Mexican literature, but in world literature as well. The fundamental element in Rulfian stories is death.

For the most part the versions of the poems offered here have been adapted from rather old books, and they frequently do not correspond exactly to what is found in some modern textbooks.
After each poem I have added information on the rhyme and number of syllables per line, with the hope that this will help you appreciate a little more some of the technical aspects of Spanish poetry.

    Colombia
Colombia has a varied regional cuisine and some wonderful fruits. Do try them. You'll be offered coffee in various forms:
  • tinto: small cup of strong, black coffee
  • perico or pintado: small cup of coffee with milk
  • : coffee with lots of milk Black, or regular tea, isn't popular, but , herbal teas, are. Try a cup of or citrus tea, yerbabuena or mint tea, or manzanilla , or camomile tea. The latter are excellent after a meal, and are used to settle the stomach. Try also some agua de panela , which is a drink of unrefined sugar, hot water and lemon. On the alcoholic side, Colombian beers are cheap and fairly good. Rum is good and popular along the coast. You'll find mixed results with chicha and guarapo which is home-brewed mix of fruit in agua de panela Aguardiente is popular, but local wines are not recommended. Try these

(Mayan Grilled Crab) 2 to 2 1/2 lb live crab 1 bunch radishes, cleaned and minced 1 bunch cilantro, minced 1 bitter orange, seeded and finely chopped 1 lime, seeded and finely chopped ground black pepper salt lettuce leaves If the crab is alive: approach the crab from behind. Grasp all four legs and the claw on each side near the body, being careful to avoid the powerful claws. Using the sharp edge of a sink, tabletop, or cutting board, crack the underside of the shell down the middle with one sharp blow, stunning the crab. God! these people are barbaric! Turn the crab bottom up and lift the breastplate, a roughly triangular piece of shell, being careful of the soft spines underneath. Remove these with the breastplate and discard. Remove and discard the gills on either side of the body above the legs. Remove and discard the intestine. Remove and discard the mouth parts. The body cavity will now be full of a soft, white to yellow mass of fat and edible organs collectively known as butter. This is delicious and an essential ingredient in many crab dishes. Remove and reserve the butter. Rinse any remaining matter from the body of the crab, which should now be just shell and meat.

    Brazil
    South American Melting Pot
Brazilian cooking history is in every bite of the country's food. Native Indians developed corn porridge, cassava meal, sweet potatoes, many roots, hearts of palm, many species of game and fish, and the preservation of meats by smoking and drying. In 1533, the Portuguese colonized Brazil. After a lengthy Moorish occupation, Portugal had adapted a variety of North African cooking traditions, among them coffee, dried fruits and pastries. These culinary customs were in turn exported to Brazil, with the twist of being prepared using local ingredients. The largest single influence on Brazilian cuisine came with African slaves. Dende, peppers and coconut milk, staples of West African cooking, became firmly established on the Brazilian palate.

Sunday, November 14th 2010 Read about dining out in Brazil Although many of the basic ingredients used through Brazilian cuisine are the same, there is quite a variety depending on the region. Popular ingredients in Brazil include rice, black beans, pork, mandioc, palm oil, salted codfish, and coconut. Brazilian dishes are heavily influenced by the native indian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Middle Eastern, Asian, and African cooking. The national dish in Brazil is Feijoada. This hearty meal is made with black beans, pork and other pig parts, toasted mandioc(cassava flour). Every person has their own special version so it is quite hard to find an exact recipe however the basic ingredients are always included. Free Credit Report
