Jump to: navigation search Latin is an ancient Indo-European language originally spoken in Latium , the region immediately surrounding Rome Latin gained wide currency, especially in Europe, as the formal language of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire , and, after Rome's conversion to Christianity , of the Roman Catholic Church (although by the time of widespread Christian conversion in Europe, Latin had already become more a language of the Church and of scholars, rather than of the common people). Principally through the influence of the Church, it also became the primary language of later medieval European scholars and philosophers. As an inflectional and synthetic language, compared to mostly analytic languages such as English, Latin word order is variable, conveying syntax through a systemic system of affixes attached to word stems. The Latin alphabet, derived from that of the Etruscans and Greeks (each of those themselves derived from the earlier Phoenician alphabet), remains the most widely used alphabet in the world. The lingua Latina is the language of Rome. It is the most apt and only authentic vehicle to fully express the Roman culture, to gain access to her literature, her ideas and philosophies, to immerse oneself in her ethics and virtues, to not only understand but also intimately adopt and perfectly embody her complete world-view and way of life; it is also the only language in which the Roman religious rites can be duly performed. Nova Roma shows the essential importance of this language in all its terminology; the different positions of government, the official names of the laws and decrees, the names of the virtues are all expressed in Latin. It is one of the the goals of Nova Roma to promote the Lingua Latina and its revival in all circumstances of life among its citizens.
Learning Latin
Latin continues to be studied widely across Europe and in the Americas. A recent study placed Latin as the fourth most popular high school language in the United States, ahead of such contemporary languages as Italian and Japanese. There is a long history of investigation into the academic benefits of Latin study.

LATIN LANGUAGE. 1. Earliest Records of its Area. - Latin was the language spoken in Rome and in the plain of Latium in the 6th or 7th century B.C. - the earliest period from which we have any contemporary record of its existence. But it is as yet impossible to determine either, on the one hand, whether the archaic inscription of Praeneste (see below), which is assigned with great probability to that epoch, represents exactly the language then spoken in Rome; or, on the other, over how much larger an area of the Italian peninsula, or even of the lands to the north and west, the same language may at that date have extended. In the 5th century B.C. we find its limits within the peninsula fixed on the north-west and south-west by Etruscan (see Etruria Language); on the east, south-east, and probably north and north-east, by Safine (Sabine) dialects (of the Marsi Paeligni Samnites Sabini and Picenum , qq.v.); but on the north we have no direct record of Sabine speech, nor of any non-Latinian tongue nearer than Tuder and Asculum or earlier than the 4th century B.C. (see Umbria IGUvIUM Picenum ). We know however, both from tradition and from the archaeological data, that the Safine tribes were in the 5th century B.C. migrating, or at least sending off swarms of their younger folk, farther and farther southward into the peninsula. Of the languages they were then displacing we have no explicit record save in the case of Etruscan in

Latin Language
Did you ever wonder why the language of ancient Rome was called Latin and not Roman? The answer is in the fact that Romans spoke the language of the district in which they lived, Latium in Italy. The influence of Rome as a country made Latin the common language of South and Western Europe. In these areas Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Romanian and Portuguese) were later derived from Latin. To understand the English language thoroughly it is necessary to have a knowledge of Latin. This is caused by the fact that Anglo-Saxon language (Old English), had borrowed many words from Latin, either directly or through French. This Germanic language group, spoken in Britain, south of the Forth (except Wales and Cornwall), has been making these borrowings both before and after the Norman Conquest (AD 1066). As a result, modern English and Latin are quite closely connected. The earliest samples of the Latin language we have are inscriptions, and fragments of songs, hymns, laws and annals.

    Latin language (Lingua Latina)
In the 5th century BC, Latin was just one of many Italic languages spoken in central Italy. Latin was the language of the area known as Latium (modern Lazio), and Rome was one of the towns of Latium. The earliest known inscriptions in Latin date from the 6th century BC and were written using an alphabet adapted from the Etruscan alphabet. Rome gradually expanded its influence over other parts of Italy and then over other parts of Europe. Eventually the Roman Empire stretched across a wide swathe of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Latin was used throughout the empire as the language of law, administration and increasingly as the language of everyday life. Literacy was common among Roman citizens and the works of great Latin authors were read by many. Meanwhile in the eastern Mediterranean, Greek remained the lingua franca and well-educated Romans were familiar with both languages. In fact the earliest surviving examples of Latin literature are Latin translations of Greek plays, and Cato's farming manual, which dates from 150 BC. The language used in much early Latin literature, classical Latin, differed in many ways from colloquial spoken Latin, known as vulgar Latin, though some writers, including Cicero and Petronius, used vulgar Latin in their work. Over the centuries the spoken varieties of Latin continued to move away from the literary standard and eventually evolved into the modern Italic/Romance languages (
