Identification. Baltic tribes arrived in what is now Latvia from the Pripet marshes around 1000 B.C.E. These included the Lettgalians, and the term Latvju derives from the peoples and province of Latgale . The most important minority group was the Baltic Germans, who settled there in the thirteenth century. Jews arrived in the seventeenth century. A sizable Russian community moved to the cities, particularly Riga. The polarization of cultural identification in terms of Latvian and Russian is primarily a rural-urban divide. Location and Geography. Demography. Urbanization, war, and the Soviet occupation have been the major sources of demographic change. Until the Soviet occupation Latvia was a predominantly rural society. World War II and Soviet occupation brought about massive changes. The German occupation resulted in the extermination of the Jewish population as well as thousands of Latvians. The Soviet occupation led to the loss of 250,000 Latvians through exile and death. At present ethnic Latvians account for 56 percent of the population. Linguistic Affiliation.

The territory of Latvia has been populated since 9000 BC. Baltic tribes , the ancestors of present day Latvians , arrived around 3000 BC. In the 13th century after conquest of today's Latvia, Baltic Germans settled here and gradually became the upper class and rulers of Latvia, while Latvians and Livonians lost their positions finally becoming serfs in 16th century. This caused the Germanisation of the educated inhabitants of other nationalities, yet preserved some local traditions. In the 19th century, when serfdom was abolished, a Latvian nationalist movement, the first " Latvian National Awakening ", begun. Led by "

Flag of Latvia While the Latvian flag was officially reinstated in 1990, the Latvian flag actually has a history that dates to the 13th century - making it one of the world's oldest flags. The flag's symbolism originates in a Latvian legend about the death of a Latvian chief. When the chief died in battle, he was wrapped in a white sheet, and each end of the sheet was stained with blood. This sheet, flown in battle, oversaw the Latvian tribe's next victory. Latvia language or Latvian is the official language of independent Latvia since 1991. Latvian language is the language of the original local Latvian people, Letts, who constitute 58.6% of the population. The other languages spoken in Latvia include Russian, Belarusian, Ukranian, Lithuanian, and Polish.
Latvian, spoken by 58.6% of the populace, is followed by Russian spoken by 28.9%, Belarusian by 3.9%, Ukranian by 2.6% and Polish by 2.5%. Strangely, Lithuanian which is similar to Latvian is spoken very sparingly.
The Latvian language is one of the Baltic languages , the others being Old Prussian and Lithuanian. The Baltic languages form a well-identified set of all Indo-European languages. Originally the Latvian language used Fractur alphabets which were adapted German alphabets. In the 1930s modified Latin based alphabets devised by K. Muhlenbach and Dr. J. Endzelins started to be used.
The language of Latvia contains 37 alphabets. The break-up of these 37 alphabets are:

    Latvia : Culture
Latvia was one of the most urbanized republics of the former Soviet Union, reaching an urbanization rate of 71 % in 1990. consequently, the rate of urbanization decreased and was around to be 69.5 % in 1992. Part of the reason for the decline no doubt can be found in the out-migration of non-Latvians to other republics. It seems probable, as well, that a slight shift back to rural areas occurred as a result of the start-up of some 50,000 private farms. One of the innovations introduced with freedom was the reestablishment of schools or programs for other ethnic groups. Before the Soviet occupation in 1940, Latvia had more than 300 state-supported schools offering instruction for different ethnic groups: 144 Russian, 60 Jewish, 16 Polish, 13 Lithuanian, 4 Estonian,1 Belorussian, and 85 with several languages of instruction. All of these except the Russian schools were closed after 1945.After 1990 various ethnic groups were offered the opportunity of again maintaining schools in their own language of instruction, and by the 1993-94 school year some 210 schools were in operation: more than 200 Russian, 4 Polish, 1 Estonian, 1 Lithuanian, 1 Ukrainian, and 1 Jewish. Latvia had the first Jewish secondary school in the entire Soviet Union. It should be famous that most of the non-Latvian groups had largely assimilated with the Russians, and many of their members did not speak their native tongue. Aizkraukles Aluksnes Balvu Bauskas ... Latvia Culture
Latvia Culture is inspired to a great extent from the unwritten literature based on superstitious stories and facts. The people of Latvia are deeply rooted to their land and are highly influenced by the other neighboring Baltic states of Europe. In the ancient times Latvian people were believers of pagan rituals and customs but after the advent of Christianity they have all become followers of Christianity.
    LATVIAN LITERATURE
Latvian culture owes a great deal to their ancestors who were mainly warriors and sang ballads to their master at the time of war .These songs are still apart of Latvian culture and these mythical songs have a unique history to tell. The popular “Dainas” are preserved as great masterpieces of art and culture and is published in the 19th century by Krisjanis Barons. The Latvian literature is quite rich and in the year 1888 the epical poem written by Andrejs Pumpurs named “ Lacplesis” gained a lot of popularity as it commemorated the beginning of Latvian literature.
    CULTURAL LIVES OF LATVIANS
Latvian people are lovers of music and theater. Their culture revolves around opera music , orchestral symphony and circus pro grammes. Latvian people are highly talented and they take major interest in practicing fine arts like drawing and making sketches of animate and inanimate objects. Their cultural activities are quite interesting where involvement in local dances, musical competitions along with wining and dining makes the most of their living.
