Language and Culture
Latvia Table of Contents The Latvian language, like Lithuanian, belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Latvian is an inflective language, written in the Latin script and influenced syntactically by German. The oldest known examples of written Latvian are from catechisms published in 1585. Because of the heavy influx of ethnic Russians and other Slavs after World War II, nearly one-half of the country's population does not speak Latvian (see table 22, Appendix). Most ethnic Latvians speak Russian, however, and many also know German (see table 23, Appendix). Latvian culture is strongly influenced by folklore and by the people's attachment to their land. Christian rituals often are intermingled with ancient customs, and pagan geometric symbols remain evident in the applied arts. Ancient folksongs, or dainas , that were first collected and published in the mid-nineteenth century, most notably by Krisjanis Barons, are a cultural treasure. In 1888 the great epic poem Lacplesis (Bear Slayer) by Andrejs Pumpurs was published, marking the dawn of modern Latvian literature. Janis Rainis (1865-1929) usually tops the list of Latvia's greatest writers. One of the most prominent figures in Latvian literature today is the poet Imants Ziedonis, who also has established a fund to promote the development of Latvian culture.

Another notable language of Latvia is the nearly extinct Livonian language of Baltic-Finnic sub-branch of Uralic language family, which enjoys protection by law. The Latgalian language (a dialect of Latvian) is also protected by Latvian law as historical variation of Latvian language. Russian is by far the most widespread minority language. Latvian People, Culture and Society Religion At one time, Latvians ascribed to naturalist or what might be termed pagan beliefs in natural deities. Although no longer practised as a religion the tradition lives on in folk songs, legends and festivals. Christianity arrived during the 12th and 13th centuries while the Russian Orthodox religion took hold in the 18th century. The effect religion had on the population greatly diminished during Communist occupation, when followers were harassed and discriminated against.

Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvija or Latvijas Republika), is a country in north-eastern Europe. Latvia has land borders with its two fellow Baltic states Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south - and Russia and Belarus to the east. In the west, Latvia shares a maritime border with Sweden. The capital of Latvia is Riga.
The Republic of Latvia was founded in 1918. Its state symbols have survived through a century of nation building, wars, occupations and liberations. They embody the history, culture and values of those who have lived here by the Baltic Sea for thousands of years. The oak tree, amber, water and land are just some of the many natural symbols that appear in Latvian designs and decorations.
Latvians are the descendants of the early Baltic peoples who first settled along the Baltic Sea 4,000 years ago. From the 13l century on Riga became a major Hanseatic trading centre in Livonia, while in the 17l century the Duchy of Kurzeme was a major sea power. As part of 19th century Czarist Russia, Latvia was a centre of industry. Independence was established in 1918, and after Soviet occupation, restored again in 1991.
Nearly 1 million of Latvia's 2.3 million inhabitants live and work in the bustling capital of Riga, which straddles the mouth of the River Daugava. Daugavpils (112,000), Liepaja (86,000) and Jelgava (66,000) are the next largest. Ventspils (44,000) on the Western coast is also Latvia's busiest port. Yet regardless of their size, almost all of Latvia's 77 cities, as well as towns and villages offer rich historical legacies, picturesque settings and diverse architectural and cultural influences.
