Every time I think I’ve heard it all, someone in a school (usually a teacher) says something that makes my jaw drop. I don’t have any scientific proof but I would say that school year 2008-2009 was especially jaw dropping. I believe it could be attributed to the financial meltdown of [...] Continue Reading We don’t Test for Dyslexia… And Other Stupid Things School Say Tags: Dyslexia Special Ed Special Ed Parent Coach By Susan Epstein 10 comments

home about us the history the director ... annual report "More inclusive than any other program I've seen."
The Director
Kelly Boon,
Executive Director and founder of p art ners Unlimited
Many have asked, "What motivated me to do this?" At first, I thought it was through hearing the experiences of inmates that were in the work release program in our building and the fascinating information that crossed my desk at the Iowa Arts Councilof arts in prisons programming in other statesand the amazing impact it was having in people's lives. But as I continued to develop p art ners Unlimited that first year, I began to realize the real reason. It was about me. As I grew up, I was not a traditional learner. Reading and math were very hard for me. I wanted to be a writer, but my inept spelling and grammar (along with some teachers) steered me away. In elementary school, I was segregated into the "C" group for slower learners ...nobody was kidding us, we all knew it meant stupid. I always scored very low in listening and following directions. I grew up struggling to make C's, yet excelling in all of the arts. It wasn't until I had achieved my teaching certificate and began teaching art in the public school systems that I realized that the kids coming into my art room were a lot like me. Many were failing miserably in academics and soaring in the arts. At that time Howard Gardner and others were gaining popularity in their writings about multiple forms of intelligence. I was an adult before I realized… I am an intelligent person!
