Introduction: This page contains learning and teaching resources aimed at strengthening literacy skills in a number of subject areas. The links include books and other learning resources distributed by exhibiters at various conferences in California such as the Title I Directors conference and the Achieving Schools conference. Our intent is to provide a convenient list of links to no-cost or low cost current materials and methods that might help parents support the work of classroom teachers. However, we have also included some of the more expensive instructional materials and methods that seem to be very interesting or complete. We have not evaluated these documents and sources. This is left to the viewer. We have organized the materials and vendors into the following categories that correspond to general subject areas: 1) General Reference; 2) Reading Literacy/English Language Arts; 3) We have also coded the vendors according to price. Strategy 7:
Developing the Conscience of Craft
We can help students learn to value learning and care about the quality of their work if we:
  • Set objectives that pertain to work attitudes. Use cooperative learning to develop a peer ethic that supports academic work. Teach with the expectation that every child can learn. Combine high expectations with high support. Develop students' capacities for self-evaluation. Foster students' love of learning and pride in knowledge by helping them develop real expertise. Develop a learning community that celebrates the success of class members. Teach to different learning styles. Teach to students' interests and help them discover and develop their individual talents. Help students develop the discipline of doing homework.

    Teacher Timeline
How can I do all of this? That's the number one question I get when I coach. The quick answer is you can't. There are so many effective activities from which to choose. Just think about these choices: guided reading, literature circles, reading conferences, reading workshop, silent sustained reading, Socratic Seminars, reciprocal teaching, readers' theater, and literacy centers. All are good options. (I have posted a list of choices for the literacy block on my newsletter page, under " Teacher Timeline While some of these activities overlap, teachers can really only do one at a time. While some students can be reading silently and others can be working in literacy centers, the teacher can only be in one place. It's like when we built a new house. I had to decorate each of the rooms from scratch. I went to the store with list in hand but when I got there, I drove myself crazy with all the possibilities! I wanted to get what I needed for the kitchen, but then I would see a great fixture for the dining room. I was flitting from one thing to the next and not really doing anything well. In desperation one Saturday, I made a wish list for each room of the house. I promised myself to focus on one room when I shopped. That way, I spent the whole day getting something accomplished. Over a period of 5 years, I got everything I wanted completed and in place.

RELATED RESOURCES Key characteristics of Classroom and Group Support (Secondary Interventions) include the following approaches, strategies, and procedures that are used with some students who are at-risk for serious problem behavior, and for whom universal supports alone have not been effective in teaching expected social behaviors:
    • Problem-solving team (with behavioral expertise) meets regularly (e.g., twice monthly) to assure that students are identified and referred who may benefit from group support/secondary interventions School-wide expectations are defined and directly taught in specific settings where groups of some students still have behavior problems (e.g., classrooms, hallways, cafeteria), based on a simple/brief analysis of function of problem behavior Behavioral expectations are encouraged (positively acknowledged) in specific settings with specific groups of students who may need additional support (e.g., using Check-and-Connect Systems)

    Education in China
    By Randall Shirley
Teachers Get Respect China is one country that truly celebrates Teachers Day. Every year, on September 10, The Chinese pay huge respect to their teachers - past and present. Chinese culture places very high value on age and wisdom, and the Chinese term for teacher literally translates to "old master." A person doesn't have to be old to be an important teacher in Chinese society. Treated like a King "When I went to teach English in Taiwan, I was shocked at the degree of respect my students showed me," says a former English teacher in his 20s. "I was younger than most of my students, and had less formal education than some of them, but with the title 'old master of English,' they treated me like a king." September 10 is Teachers' Day in China Established by the government 19 years ago, it serves to remind society of the hard work and sacrifices so many people make for education.

    Education in Japan
    By Randall Shirley
This tiny country with over 125 million people puts a super-high value on classroom education - especially at the right school. The Japanese act humble in public. But the truth: they are very competitive and proud! In general, it is a matter of pride for students to study like crazy so they can get into the best schools - starting when they're very young (Japanese children are required to attend nine years of school). Juku Schools Many children pay to attend special "juku" or "cram" schools where they study at night, on weekends, and holidays, hoping to improve their chances at getting into better schools - from primary to university. Students begin studying English in 7th grade, but many start much earlier - with parents sending them to English classes, sometimes starting at age 3-4.
