Literacy Using balanced literacy and the reading and writing workshop model, students have many "real" age-appropriate literacy experiences - listening to stories, reading good books, and making early attempts to use writing to convey meaning and become life long learners. The teachers provide academic intervention in the early grades to solidify the concepts of written words and a broader knowledge of spoken language (phonemic awareness) to help them become fluent readers and writers while monitoring their comprehension skills.
    Math
The children at MTW are involved in their own learning through the use of child-friendly manipulative materials as utilized in the TERC math curriculum. Social Studies at MTW Social Studies is an interdisciplinary study of the human world, past and present. Through social studies teachers and students have the opportunity to:

Students' Education Paid For By State, Private Funds
POSTED: 4:35 pm EDT September 10, 2008
UPDATED: 9:09 pm EDT September 10, 2008 Email Print BALTIMORE The SEED School, Maryland's first public boarding school in Baltimore city, opened over the summer for its first 80 students, all of whom are sixth-graders. Tour Baltimore's First Boarding School The SEED School is housed on the 52-acre site of what used to be Southwestern High School. WBAL TV 11 News education reporter Tim Tooten took a tour of the school on Wednesday. "It's really different because I'm learning a whole bunch of stuff I never really knew in elementary school," said student Jourdynn Dickerson. The students come from 12 Maryland school districts and are there by choice. They were picked in a lottery out of more than 300 applicants from across the state. A good number of them receive free and reduced-priced lunches, school officials said. Tuition is $34,000 a year, but it is paid for with state and local education dollars and private donations. Many of the students said they hope to be the first in their families to attend college.
