Lebanon : Culture
Finally, the war had weakened the loose bonds of national loyalty and the feeling of belonging to one society. Although some Lebanese still believed in the efficacy of restoring the unity of a society that would comprise all sects, voices of religious fanaticism and self-interest rejected national and political integration within a system of mutual tolerance. This deficiency of consensus on national issues partly accounted for the continuation of war and conflict in Lebanon in the late 1980s. Beqaa Beyrouth Ej Jnoub Liban Nord ... Beirut Rock Festival Raises Fears of Death Culture, Suicides, Drug Abuse A rock festival in the capital Beirut has generated an old-new controversy about the dangers of this music genre and its effects on the youth, namely its alleged promotion of suicide, devil worship worship of the power of evil; - still practiced by barbarians who believe that the good and evil forces of nature are of equal power.

the Beirut influential daily AN NAHAR Friday, the Beirut Rock Festival has led a number of social activists to launch a campaign aimed to raise awareness particularly among the youth. The campaign, geared at educational, religious, civic, and official circles, alerts to "a dangerous event in the city". It says: "Please be careful".
Experts on youth affairs in schools and universities are wary of the festival, which is being held from Nov. 11-14 because it promotes "Gothic" and "Heavy Metal" music. Campaigners against the concerts are particularly worried about the closing parties of the festival, fearing youth will meet "and plunge deeper into their state of loss and cycle of confusion", said a campaigner who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We have nothing against the festival, and we know there are people who like rock music in Lebanon," she added.

Painters, sculptors, and performers and producers in theater, film, and television have recently distinguished themselves. Lebanons coastal plain is divided into several isolated sections by gorges, which are cut by streams that pour down the mountains in winter and spring. In ancient times, north-south movement along the plain was nearly impossible.
Villages developed on larger sections of the plain, and those with good harbors and better agricultural areas evolved into the city-states of Phoenicia. These cities then used the Mediterranean Sea to communicate and trade with one another and beyond the coastal plain. Due to geographical and other barriers, however, Phoenicia never unified politically.

In most Western countries, music plays a very important role. In most places, music can be heard, either on the radio, on television, or in stores. The same can be said for Lebanon. Music is a critical part of its culture. In fact, Lebanon is known as the center of the Arab music world. Lebanese recording artists are some of the most popular and well-known musicians in the entire Arab world. Lebanese culture has had many influences over the years. Muslims, Christians, Europeans, Arabs, and Turks have all ruled Lebanon. It is located between the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, and Syria. It has many natural resources. These resources have brought many different people to Lebanon. And with each group of people came a different kind of culture.

A law determines the cases in which the French language may be used". The majority of Lebanese people speak Arabic and either French or English fluently. Moreover, Lebanese people of Armenian or Greek descent also speak Armenian or Greek fluently. Also in use is Kurdish spoken by some of the Kurdish minorities in Lebanon, and Syriac by the Syriac minorities. Other languages include Circassian, spoken by 50,000, Tigrinya (30,000), Sinhala (25,000), Turkish (10,000), Azerbaijani (13,000), Polish (5,000), Russian and Romanian (together 10,000 speakers), and Turkmen (8,000 speakers). Lebanese Society and Culture The People There has deliberately not been a census in Lebanon since 1932, before its formation as an independent nation. This is due to the political consequences a major shift in the population dynamics an accurate census could have. The population is generally viewed in terms of religion. The predominant differences between people are those between Muslim and Christian sects. The proportion of each is politically sensitive so estimates from different sources vary widely. What is known is that approximately 90% of the population is urban rather than rural.
