Lebanon Geography
Lebanon Geography The history of Lebanon is shaped in large part to the country's geography. The mountains squeezed against the sea, thus, the country developed a diverse identity. Any map of Lebanon will make plain the necessity of some turning to the sea. Nature encouraged this with her many natural harbors, located along the Lebanese coastline. Another segment sought refuge and protection in the high altitudes of Lebanon's two mountain ranges. These two ranges, Mount Lebanon in the west, and the Anit-Lebanese in the east, are two of the most rugged ranges in that part of the world. They remain snow-capped throughout the year. The famous Mount Herman is the Anti-Lebanese mountains' highest peak, at just over 9,200 feet.

Lebanon Geography
Lebanon geography divided the country into vastly different regions. When one looks at a map of Lebanon, one immediately notices it is a land between mountains and the sea. Click a link to view that map.
It was also a country sandwiched in-between Syria and Palestine . Perhaps no other country was as defined by its geography as Lebanon. Lebanon geography consists of great forests from the mountains, fertile land in the Beqa Valley, and great natural harbors along the coast. The history of Lebanon, thus, was a diverse and rich history. The snow capped mountain peaks have been offered as the reasoning behind the name "Lebanon". Lebanon geography starts in the east with the Mediterranean Sea. The coastline of Lebanon stretches over 130 miles along the Great Sea. Lebanon geography allowed for the development of great port cities, formed from natural harbors. Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos were just a few of the great Phoenician ports. Phoenician culture dominated Lebanon, and impacted ancient Israel mightily as well. The shoreline was rocky in the north, and sandy in the south.

Lebanon Geography
Lebanon, a small country along the Mediterranean Sea, stretches over an approximate area of 10,400 square kilometers and shares its boundaries with Syria and Israel. Lebanon geography is characterized by rough and rocky terrain. The Biqa valley divides the Anti-Lebanon and Lebanon Mountains. Lebanon's geography is varied and exhibits various kinds of soils, vegetation and land forms.
Lebanese topography is unique in the sense that there are alternate highlands and lowlands running in a parallel manner from the northern side to the southern side of the continent. The Coastal strip, the central plateau, eastern Lebanon and western Lebanon are four such strips. While the coastal strip comprises of sahil, as it is locally called .The central plateau comprises of the very important Biqa valley while eastern Lebanon is the home of the Anti-Lebanon Range of mountains. Western Lebanon is famous for the Lebanon Mountains, highest mountain range in Lebanon and one of the most inhospitable terrains. The country of Lebanon is distinctly divided into five broad divisions namely Mount Lebanon, Anti Lebanon, Beqaa Valley, the Coastal plains and the shoreline.
Several streams and rivers flow through Lebanon but none of them are fit for navigation. Most of these water bodies have their source in springs located high above in the mountains. These rivers come down with great speed and the resulting momentum erodes away the surface of rocks. The Litani and the Orontes River are the two major rivers of Lebanon. These two rivers have several tributaries and distributaries. Buhayrat al Qirawn is the one lake which has water throughout the year while the other lake near Yammunah is a seasonal one and depends on rainfall for its water supply.

It is in the Middle East. To its east lies Syria. To its south lies Israel. To its west lies the Mediterranean Sea. The Middle East can be a very hot and dry place. Parts of Lebanon are no different. But Lebanon is considered a special country in the Middle East for good reasons. Lebanon has a culture that isn't like its neighbors. Its geography, too, is something unique. Lebanon is a very old country. People have been living in Lebanon for thousands of years. In fact, Lebanon's first people arrived there 12,000 years ago! People called Phoenicians started arriving in Lebanon in 10,000 BC. These people created some of the world's first cities. Since then, other people have been drawn to Lebanon's geography.

GEOGRAPHY of LEBANON
B eirut is the Capital City of Lebanon. Other major cities are Tripoli (Tarablous), Sidon (Saida), Tyre (Sour) and Zahle. L ebanon is a small and beautiful country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It is about 225 km (150 miles) in length (its coastline) and is, on average, some 45 km (30 miles) in width. The total area of the country is 10452 square kilometers or about 4500 square miles. It is bordered on the north and east by Syria and on the south by Israel. L ebanon has a narrow coastal plane and two parallel north/south mountains (the mountains of Lebanon and anti-Lebanon) separated by the fertile Bekaa valley with its main rivers of Litani and the Orantes (al-Assi). The two highest peaks are Kournet Assaouda in the north of Mount Lebanon (altitude 3,083 meters or 10, 112 feet) and Jabal al-Sheikh (altitude 2814 metres or 9,230 feet) in the South of Mount anti-Lebanon. T he country is set geographically between three continents, Europe, Africa and Asia, with all of its length on the coast, Lebanon is a true Mediterranean country. T he coastline from Tripoli in the north to Beirut is rocky and steep. The area between Beirut and Tyre in the south is covered with sandy stretches. The Bekaa plain, a plateau 110 kms. long and 25 kms. wide, lies between the Anti-Lebanon range and the coastal range. The Anti-Lebanon range stretches into Syria.
