Lebanon - History
The new state was a response to the nationalist aspirations of the predominant Christian population in the area, but it included territories traditionally considered to be part of Syria,
with largely Muslim populations.
Lebanon was administered by France, under a League of Nations mandate, from 1920 until independence was declared on 26 Nov. 1941. A republic was established in 1943, and full autonomy was granted in January 1944.
After the establishment of Israel in 1948, and during the Arab-Israeli wars, thousands of Palestinians fled to Lebanon, where most of them were housed in refugee camps in the south of the country.
Following the creation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1964, military training centres for Palestinian guerrilla fighters were established in the camps. From 1968 the fedayin ("martyrs"), as the guerrillas were known, began making raids into Israel, provoking retaliatory attacks by Israeli forces against targets in southern Lebanon.
In March 1978 a raid by forces of the Palestine National Liberation Movement (Al-Fatah), the main guerrilla group within the PLO, provoked retaliatory action by Israel, whose forces advanced into southern Lebanon.

For a while after the independence of 1943, independent Lebanon was a model ecumenical society. Its strategic Middle Eastern location and relatively stable government made it a major trade and financial center. But two fatal flaws marred the country's chance for lasting peace.
The first cause for conflict was the unbalanced power-sharing arrangement. Control rested with the right-wing Christian part of the population while the Muslims, who comprised 50% of the population felt excluded from real government.
A second problem arose as Lebanon was gradually drawn in to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Although the country did not actively participate militarily, displaced Palestinian Muslim refugees flooded into the country and continued their attacks on Israel from Lebanese bases.
In 1958 a Muslim rebellion ended when American marines landed in Beirut, but in the summer of 1975 all-out civil war broke out between the Muslim coalition allied with Palestinian groups and the Christian-dominated militias.
In April 1976, an uneasy cease-fire was forced upon the two sides when Syrian military forces intervened at the request of the Lebanese president, Suleiman Franjieh and with the approval of the Arab League of States.

You'd be pretty happy with that, wouldn't you? Now that you're rich, what kind of problems could you expect? maybe you'd have trouble spending all that money! Do you think your friends and family would bother you, asking you for money? There's a country in the Middle East that's been in a similar situation. Unlike most other Middle Eastern countries, it has lots of natural resources, and throughout history, everyone has wanted a piece of it. This country is Lebanon. It is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, just north of Israel and west of Syria. In the Bible, Lebanon was called the "land of milk and honey," because of its great natural riches. It also had many good ports along its coast and high, easily defended mountains. These features made Lebanon attractive land for explorers and settlers.
