    What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a painful condition which, although curable, can leave sufferers deformed and crippled if left untreated. There are three types of the disease. The generalised form - the lepromatous form - attacks peripheral nerves, the skin, the hands and feet, the mucous membranes (such as the lining of the nose), and the eyes. In contrast, the tuberculoid form is localised, so its affects are less widespread across the body. The third type is known as borderline or dimorphous leprosy, and is has characteristics of both other forms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates there are 830,000 cases of the disease worldwide. It is most prevalent in poverty-stricken areas of in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Fifteenth International Congress on Leprosy is currently meeting in Beijing to assess progress towards the WHO's goal of achieving a world without leprosy by the year 2000.

Leprosy is a very enigmatic subject. Often it is associated with the Bible but only in the older versions. Most of the later translations render the Hebrew and Greek words as "Terrible Skin Disease" etc. and yet, paradoxically, "Leprosy", as we know it today, basically is not a skin disease. Essentially, it is a disease which affects the nerves, although not the central nervous system. Only the peripheral nerves and their cutaneous branches are involved. What then was the "leprosy" of the Bible? Was it what we call "Hansen’s Disease" today? The answer is No. The Hebrew word "Tsara’ath" may have included Hansen’s Disease or what is called True Leprosy today, but even this is doubted
That Hebrew word is not a precise medical term referring to a specific disease . Rather does is seem to refer to a whole range of disfiguring conditions that resulted in rejection by a society that, in its ignorance, attributed such afflictions to punishment from God. Today, there are about thirty conditions which can be confused with early and late Hansen’s Disease and these are discussed in "DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS"
Biblical "leprosy" could also involve clothing and leather garments (Leviticus 13:37-48); maybe it was a form of mildew . In Lev.14:37 it could even affect walls of buildings. Dr Stanley Browne believes that in Lev.13 v.18, it could be a form of boil; v:24 - an infection complicating a burn; v:29 - ringworm or sycosis of the scalp; v:36 a form of pustular dermatitis; v:42 - a favus or desert sore.

D. 1960 was regarded as intractable and incurable. To reduce the psychological trauma reported by sufferers, the condition has been renamed "Hansen's disease," after G. A. Both ancient and modern writings show considerable confusion about the terminology for leprosy. Heb. sara'at is of uncertain provenance and meaning, having been related variously to the roots for "strike," "become disfigured in the skin," "erupt," and "hornet." Since the ailment is given more prominence than any other in Scripture, the inability to determine the term's derivation is very unfortunate. In Lev. 13 sara'at is evidently used in a technical sense, describing a class of pathological conditions. If related to Akk.

Child with leprosy Today, the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy is easy and most endemic countries are striving to fully integrate leprosy services into existing general health services.
This is especially important for those under-served and marginalised communities most at risk from leprosy, often the poorest of the poor.
Access to information, diagnosis and treatment with multidrug therapy (MDT) remain key elements in the strategy to eliminate the disease as a public health problem, defined as reaching a prevalence of less than 1 leprosy case per 10,000 population. MDT treatment has been made available by WHO free of charge to all patients worldwide since 1995, and provides a simple yet highly effective cure for all types of leprosy. According to official reports received during 2010 from 141 countries and territories, the global registered prevalence of leprosy at the beginning of 2010 stood at 211,903 cases, while the number of new cases detected during 2009 was 244,796 (excluding the small number of cases in Europe). Most previously highly endemic countries have now reached elimination (defined as a registered prevalence rate of <1 case/10 000 population). During 2007, both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mozambique reached this important stage. Those few countries that remain are very close to eliminating the disease. However, pockets of high endemicity still remain in some areas of Angola, Brazil, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal, and the United Republic of Tanzania. These countries remain highly committed to eliminating the disease, and continue to intensify their leprosy control activities.

Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Contrary to myth, leprosy does not cause body parts to fall off, although they can become numb and/or diseased as a result of the disease. Historically, leprosy has affected humanity for over 4,000 years, and was well-recognized in the civilizations of ancient China Egypt , and India DNA taken from the shrouded remains of a man discovered in a tomb next to the Old City of Jerusalem shows him to be the first human proven to have suffered from leprosy.

    What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae that causes damage to the skin and the peripheral nervous system. The disease develops slowly (from six months to 40 years!) and results in skin lesions and deformities, most often affecting the cooler places on the body (for example, eyes, nose, earlobes, hands, feet, and testicles). The skin lesions and deformities can be very disfiguring and are the reason that infected individuals were considered outcasts in many cultures. Although human-to-human transmission is the primary source of infection, three other species can carry and (rarely) transfer

    What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a chronic bacterial disease of the skin and nerves in the hands and feet and, in some cases, the lining of the nose. Leprosy is a rare disease in the United States.
    Who gets leprosy?
Anyone can get leprosy, but children seem to be more susceptible than adults.
    How is leprosy spread?
It is not clear how the leprosy germ is spread, but household and prolonged close contact is important. The germs probably enter the body through the nose and possibly through broken skin. The germs get in the air through nasal discharge of untreated lepromatous patients.
What are the symptoms of leprosy?

Leprosy reconstructive surgery is complicated. It’s about reconstructing the tendon and muscles of the hands and fingers, feet and toes. One person may need three surgeries. Because of the deformities, specialized pre and post operative physiotherapy is essential.
NEW HOPE is still the most experienced, well equipped and only such facility in western Orissa to offer corrective surgery to Leprosy affected and deformed young people.

    Leprosy
Leprosy is a chronic bacterial infection with Mycobacterium leprae . It primarily affects the skin, mucous membranes (e.g. nose), peripheral nervous system (nerve function), eyes and testes. The form the disease takes depends on the person's immune response to the infection. Leprosy is also known as Hansen disease and is one of the oldest known diseases of mankind. It is curable but if untreated can lead to severe deformities.
    Types of leprosy
There are several forms of leprosy that range from the mildest indeterminate form to the most severe lepromatous type. More severe forms arise because of less effective immune response to the infection. Most of those infected mount an appropriate immune response and never develop signs of leprosy. Depending on clinical features, leprosy is classified as:
    • Indeterminate leprosy (IL) Tuberculoid leprosy (TT) Borderline tuberculoid leprosy (BT) Borderline borderline leprosy (BB) Borderline lepromatous leprosy (BL) Lepromatous leprosy (LL)
Patients with indeterminate leprosy, a very early form of leprosy, may either be cured or progress to one of the other forms of leprosy depending on their immune status. Within each type of leprosy, a patient may remain in that stage, improve to a less debilitating form or worsen to a more debilitating form depending on their immune state. Lepromatous leprosy is the only form that never reverts to a less severe form.
