Abstract
Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae , was identified by G. H. A. Hansen in 1873. The different clinical presentations of the disease are determined by the quality of the host immune response. The bacteria have affinity for the peripheral nerves and are likely the cause of neuropathy, a cardinal manifestation of the disease. WHO recommends a protocol of multidrug therapy (MDT), which effectively controls the disease, hence contributing to the global elimination program. Early detection of leprosy and treatment by MDT are the most important steps in preventing deformity and disability. Abbreviations

LEPROSY About the Disease
Also called Hansen's disease, leprosy has afflicted people since ancient times. It is a complex infectious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae . It mainly affects the peripheral nerves, but may also affect the skin, eyes, inner lining of nasal passages, muscles, bones and testes. People who have had leprosy for a long time may lose the use of their hands or feet due to repeated injury resulting from lack of sensation. 100 cases of leprosy are reported per year in the United States. Leprosy is common in many countries in the world, especially in temperate, tropical and subtropical climates. It is estimated that there are between one and two million people currently affected. Effective medications exist. Although isolation in "leper" colonies used to be more common, that kind of isolation, thankfully, is no longer needed.

Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Contrary to folklore, leprosy does not cause body parts to fall off, although they can become numb and/or diseased as a result of infection. Although the mode of transmission of Hansen's disease remains uncertain, most investigators think that M. leprae is usually spread from person to person in respiratory droplets. citation needed The minimum incubation period reported is as short as a few weeks and this is based on the very occasional occurrence of leprosy among young infants.[49] The maximum incubation period reported is as long as 30 years, or over, as observed among war veterans known to have been exposed for short periods in endemic areas but otherwise living in non-endemic areas. It is generally agreed that the average

“From that night on, my world would change. I had crusaded to combat prejudice against leprosy patients. I had scoffed at the possibility of contagion, assuring my staff they were in little danger. Now the story of my infection would spread through the ranks of leprosy workers. What would this do to our work?” The above quote from the book, Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants by Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancy, tells of a young doctor donating his time to help leprosy patients in need. The hysteria behind the disease causes many people to shun, avoid, and desert many leprosy patients due to the fears that the disease is highly contagious. Mycobacterium leprae , a bacterial disease known as Leprosy or Hansen’s Disease, has been the concern of millions of people for thousands of years. This website is designed to inform you about several aspects of this disfiguring monster.

Miriam's Leprosy
Miriam's Leprosy - Week One
Hello,
This week we began a new topic: Miriam's Leprosy. Following the method we have developed over the past year, we began with a look at the actual verses which describe the story, with an eye toward developing our questions about the story. This event is described in Bamidbar (Numbers), Chapter 12. It would help to have a Chumash in front of you for this e-mail.
Bamidbar 12:1
VaTidaber Miriam veAharon beMoshe - And Miriam and Aharon spoke regarding Moshe
This passage is problematic, from a grammatical perspective as well as a plot perspective.
First, the grammar: "VaTidaber" means "And she spoke." Presumably, this "she" is Miriam. However, Aharon is listed as well! Here are the possible readings:
    1. If Miriam and Aharon spoke, it should have said "VaYidabru," "And they spoke." 2. If only Miriam spoke, it should have said "VaTidaber Miriam," "And Miriam spoke," without mentioning Aharon!

Worldwide, 1-2 million persons are permanently disabled as a result of leprosy. Throughout history lepers have long been feared and shunned by others. Although leprosy is not highly contagious, and rarely causes death, it still causes anxiety for many communities throughout the world, especially in countries where the disease is most prominent. People with leprosy and their family members often suffer psychological and social problems. India]], Brazil, Indonesia, Congo, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Nepal, and Ethiopia have the highest cases of leprosy in the world.

Leprosy is catagorized by the number and type of skin affected on the body. If five or fewer areas on the body are leprous, it is called paucibacillary. There isn't supposed to be any bacteria on those samples of skin. If six or more leprous areas are on the body, it is called multibacillary. In this case, the person may or may not have bacteria found on the skin samples from the infected area. There are other ways that leprosy can be classified. Leprosy can be considered tuberculoid, lepromatous, or borderline depending on the symptoms described by the infected person. People with tuberculoid leprosy are those with fewer leprous areas than those with lepromatous or borderline leprosy. Tuberculoid leprosy is generally less severe, less common, and less contagious than the other classifications of the disease. The type of leprosy one has determines how long antibiotic treatment should last, as well as how many long-term complications there will be.

"Unclean! Unclean!" These were the words of lepers as they announced their presence among the unafflicted in biblical times. The mere mention of leprosy has struck fear in the hearts of people for thousands of years. Even though it is one of the least contagious of all bacterial diseases, the fear of physical disfigurement and the loss of social status that it brings, has made leprosy one of the most dreaded of all diseases. Lepers have been ostracized and put into separate colonies, where they lived as social outcasts and "untouchables" until the end of their lives. Leprosy or Hansen's disease is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and is the only known bacterium that infects peripheral nerves . It also affects the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and produces skin lesions (Ryan et al. 2004). If left untreated, there can be progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.

History of the disease
Leprosy was not uncommon in India as far back as the fifteenth century B.C. (Ctesias, Pers. , xli; Herodian, I, i, 38), and in Japan during the tenth century B.C. Of its origin in these regions little is known, but Egypt has always been regarded as the place whence the disease was carried into the Western world. That it was well known in that country is evidenced by documents of the sixteenth century B.C. (Ebers Papyrus); ancient writers attribute the infection to the waters of the Nile (Lucretius, "De Nat. rer.", VI, 1112) and the unsanitary diet of the people (Galen). Various causes helped to spread the disease beyond Egypt . Foremost among these causes Manetho places the Hebrews , for, according to him, they were a mass of leprosy of which the Egyptians rid their land (" Hist.

      Definition
Leprosy is an infectious disease that has been known since biblical times. It is characterized by disfiguring skin sores, nerve damage, and progressive debilitation.
      Alternative Names
      Hansen's disease
      Causes
Leprosy is caused by the organism Mycobacterium leprae . It is not very contagious (difficult to transmit) and has a long incubation period (time before symptoms appear), which makes it difficult to determine where or when the disease was contracted. Children are more susceptible than adults to contracting the disease. Leprosy has two common forms, tuberculoid and lepromatous, and these have been further subdivided. Both forms produce sores on the skin, but the lepromatous form is most severe, producing large, disfiguring lumps and bumps ( nodules All forms of the disease eventually cause nerve damage in the arms and legs, which causes sensory loss in the skin and muscle weakness.
