The Nez Perce and the Dawes Act
Grade level: 8-12 Overview
This lesson asks students to view westward expansion from the perspective of the Nez Perce and their leader Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt ( Chief Joseph ). Students follow the epic struggle of the Nez Perce against the United States government by viewing " Good Words " from Episode 6, " Fight No More Forever ," of The West . As each small segment is shown, a discussion follows in which students are asked to problem solve the best response had they been the leader of the Nez Perce. The lesson proceeds to a role-play set in 1887 (using profiles from the Interactive Biographical Dictionary ) in which students impersonate and then evaluate how a variety of Americans viewed the historic stand of the Nez Perce at the time. A document analysis of the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 sets the stage for evaluating its aftermath. The lesson ends as the class holds two debates. One, set in 1900, asks students to propose alternative legislation to the Dawes Act. The second asks students to act as historians as they evaluate the motives behind passage of the act itself.

Lesson Plans Science Physics Physics
Field Trips and Simple Physics:

You can turn a bus ride into a physics experiment that will even have your fellow teachers scratching their heads. Everyone knows that a weight suspended by a string and taped to the ceiling of the bus will appear to swing backward as the bus speeds up, and forward as it decelerates, due to inertia. Also take along a helium-filled balloon on a string to tie to a seat or fasten to the floor. What will it do? The opposite. You'll have a great time getting students to hypothesize then try to explain the result. We know that air has mass so it also has a certain inertia; when the bus moves forward the weight hanging on the string AND the air in the bus both tend to stay where they are, thus appearing to move backward. The air molecules tend to compress together toward the back of the bus, changing the air pressure in much the same way as barometric pressure changes. Tighter molecules, more pressure. The balloon, meanwhile, is trying its best to move to an area equal in density to its helium (somewhere out in the upper atmosphere, actually) so as the air pressure in the bus increases, it tends to move to an area of lesser pressure. What we really have is a bus full of air sloshing around inside, changing pressure as the bus accelerates, decelerates, or turns, with a balloon trying to get to the area of lowest pressure.

Proverbs Proverbs survive in the living language of a people because they effectively communicate closely held values and attitudes. Here is a small sampling of of Japanese proverbs. We recommend that teachers share them with students and ask students to brainstorm on: A. What situations might merit the use of such proverbs? When might such sayings be appropriate? B. What might the proverbs reveal about Japanese culture and society? Click here to download a student handout (a .pdf file without the brief explanations). Tameru nara wakagi no uchi. "While young, the tree can be easily bent." (stressing the malleability of youth) Aite no nai kenka wa dekinu. "One can't quarrel without an opponent." ("it takes two to tangle" don't blame the fight on the other) Kenka ryôseibai. Both quarrellers are to be punished. Senri no kô mo ippo yori hajimaru "A thousand li (roughly one-third of a mile) journey begins with a single step." (this is drawn from the Chinese philosophical text attributed to Lao Zi however arduous or complicated the task, one can't hope to finish it without getting started, no matter how simple or small that beginning might be)
