Our Mission
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is the most common form of adult Leukemia in the United States and the western world. The disease has not, however, received its fair share of research dollars. The mission of the CLL Foundation is to raise money for research that will lead to a better understanding of the disease and to better treatments for those who have been diagnosed with the disease. That money primarily comes from individuals who believe that CLL research is important and deserves increased funding.
The need for individual donations has never been greater. The current recession has impacted research hospitals, foundations, and government agencies as well as individuals. The resulting financial shortfall means that more people must take on the burden of supporting research. Those who can help fund research will have the satisfaction of being part of a joint effort against a terrible disease. We cannot rely on the government or on others to solve the CLL problem. Instead, we must reaffirm our commitment to the idea that individuals working together can solve common problems.
The projects that our donors have made possible are described in our “Projects” section.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
URL of this page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/chroniclymphocyticleukemia.html Also called: CLL Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells. White blood cells help your body fight infection. Your blood cells form in your bone marrow. In leukemia, however, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These cells crowd out the healthy blood cells, making it hard for blood to do its work. In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), there are too many of a specific type of white blood cell called a lymphocyte. CLL is the second most common form of leukemia in adults. It often occurs during or after middle age and rarely occurs in children. Usually CLL does not cause any symptoms at all. If you have symptoms, they may include:
  • Painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, stomach or groin Feeling very tired Pain or a feeling of fullness below the ribs Fever and infection Weight loss
Tests that examine the blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes diagnose CLL. Your doctor may choose to just monitor you until you have symptoms. Treatments include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery to remove the spleen, and targeted immune therapy.
