Home Leukemia Leukemia Programs related to this topic Neuropsychology Program Radiation Oncology What is leukemia? Leukemia is cancer of the blood and develops in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy center of the long bones that produces the three major blood cells: white blood cells to fight infection; red blood cells that carry oxygen; and platelets that help with blood clotting and stop bleeding. When a child has leukemia, the bone marrow, for an unknown reason, begins to make white blood cells that do not mature correctly, but continue to reproduce themselves. Normal, healthy cells only reproduce when there is enough space for them to fit. The body can regulate the production of cells by sending signals when to stop. With leukemia, these cells do not respond to the signals to stop and reproduce, regardless of space available. These abnormal cells reproduce very quickly and do not function as healthy white blood cells to help fight infection. When the immature white blood cells, called blasts, begin to crowd out other healthy cells in the bone marrow, the child experiences the symptoms of leukemia (i.e., infections, anemia, bleeding). Who is affected by leukemia?

My Leukemia
My real life Leukemia story
It was the end of January 1994, when I started to feel unwell. I had this pain in my right shoulder, which went to my breastbone like an electric shock. At first I thought it was a heart attack, but when the pain persisted I went to see the doctor about it. He assured me that it wasn't my heart, after putting me on the heart machine for a couple of days. This went on until May, when it was decided to send me to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. I had the same tests that I had had previously. After I had so many tests the doctor said that as he hadn't found anything wrong with me, I could go home. He also said that there was one test to have, but I could have that done anytime. I asked what that test was, he replied "A bone marrow biopsy". I asked why they couldn't do it there and then, to which he replied "Well, we could do it if you want to". In the year of 1996 we were given the O.K. to go to Tasmania. We toured that beautiful place for 2 1/2 months in our little camper-trailer. It will be 6 years on the 30 November since I had my transplant. I did make friend's whilst in hospital, unfortunately they are no longer with us. I am one of the LUCKY ones. I give my thanks to a wonderful and caring husband and family, for the support they gave me, and I have now got 3 great grandchildren.

Feline Leukemia Virus What is feline leukemia virus?
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a retrovirus, so named because of the way it behaves within infected cells. All retroviruses, including feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), produce an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, which permits them to insert copies of their own genetic material into that of the cells they have infected. Although related, FeLV and FIV differ in many ways, including their shape: FeLV is more circular while FIV is elongated. The two viruses are also quite different genetically, and their protein consituents are dissimlar in size and composition. Although many of the diseases caused by FeLV and FIV are similar, the specific ways in which they are caused differs. How common is the infection?
How is FeLV spread?
What cats are at greatest risk of infection?

Cats at greatest risk of infection are those that may be exposed to infected cats, either via prolonged close contact or through bite wounds. Such cats include:
  • Cats living with infected cats or with cats of unknown infection status
  • Cats allowed outdoors unsupervised, where they may be bitten by an infected cat

Contact A Benzene Law Firm There are a number of sources of benzene exposure, and these include products such as solvents, detergents, plastics, synthetic fibers, dyes, rubber, resins, paint, and many other items. This chemical can also be found in cigarette smoke and within the petroleum industry. Those at highest risk of prolonged or high level exposure are people that work with the chemical. Those working with petroleum based solvents are classed as high risk because they inhale the vapors released from the solvent products, as well as through the skin in the event that the solvent makes contact with the skin during work. Some of the high risk group occupations have been identified as chemical workers, refinery workers, rubber workers, printers, leather workers, press workers, painters, and gasoline distributors. Benzene is known to be responsible for a number of health disorders, and is linked with various types of leukemia amongst other illnesses. In addition to respiratory problems, skin problems, and blood disorders, the cancers that are linked to benzene exposure include acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), hairy cell leukemia (HCL), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

If you have reference material or names of individuals who can help Children with Leukemia, please send the information or names to the Jennifer Lynn Stroud Foundation, 14160 Dallas Parkway, Suite 300, Dallas, Texas 75254. HISTORY Jennifer Stroud was a typical five year old girl with a mommy, daddy and brother living in Dallas, Texas. She loved to play dolls, loved her favorite cuddly Molly, giggled, laughed, played and skipped with her friends. Around Thanksgiving 1993, we noticed she was tiring and started to run a low grade fever. We also noticed she was starting to bruise easily when she bumped into things. Lynn took her to the pediatrician who ran a blood test and told her on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1993, that she needed to go to a hospital because she may have leukemia. Later that day, we were told by the doctors she had leukemia, and later that evening that it was acute myeloid leukemia, and she started emergency treatment called leukapheresis, which cycled her blood through a filter to decrease the amount of white blood cells. Her condition was classified as critical.

Alice, I have a friend who is diagnosed with Leukemia. I would like to know what it is and what the survival rate for Leukemia is. —Good friend Dear Good friend, What a great thing that you want to learn more about what is happening with your friend. Leukemia is a general term for several types of cancers characterized by a proliferation of disorganized white blood cells in the bone marrow. It is thought that leukemia results from the mutation of a single white cell that alters its genetic structure. The cell uncontrollably divides until there are billions of copies of this abnormal cell which infiltrate the bone marrow and bloodstream. Diagnosis of all forms of leukemia is done through some combination of a physical exam, blood tests, analysis of chromosomes, and/or bone marrow biopsy. There are four major types of leukemia, classified by how rapidly the disease progresses and which type of white blood cell is affected. In
