Leukemia
Leukemia refers to a group of cancers of the blood and bone marrow. The disease is categorized by what type of blood cell is affected and by how quickly it develops and progresses. Leukemia can arise in either of the two main types of infection-fighting white blood cells — in lymphoid cells, as lymphocytic leukemia, or in myeloid cells, as myeloid or myelogenous leukemia. If the cancer is fast growing, it's called acute. If it's slower growing, it's known as chronic. For many blood cancers, a bone marrow or stem cell transplant , pioneered and perfected at the Hutchinson Center, is the most effective treatment. Center researchers are also working to develop other new treatments, including therapies that harness the innate cancer-fighting power of the immune system and highly targeted drugs that selectively kill cancer cells. Learn more groundbreaking research on the four major types of leukemia:
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myeloid leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in adults, although it also can occur in children. If untreated, this form of leukemia usually progresses quickly. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
Chronic myeloid leukemia originates from the presence of a genetic abnormality in blood cells, called the Philadelphia chromosome, and progresses through distinct phases. CML occurs mainly in adults, but a very small number of children also develop this disease.

Feline Leukemia
Cats Immune and Blood System It is pretty confusing to deal with feline leukemia Cats with feline leukemia often have an increased susceptibility to bladder infections (actually to many infections). It would be best to besure that this was not leading to the behavioral changes. Cats with felineleukemia also often have behavioral changes that do not always seem tohave a specific physical cause. In some cases they may be too weak to makeit to a litterpan in a location such as the second story of a house oreven into a litterpan with high sides. If there is an suspicion this isthe case it is definitely a problem you need to discuss with your vet.Lastly, cats with feline leukemia can have physical and behavioral problemstotally unrelated to the feline leukemia. If this seems to be the casethe standard advice for litterpan problems found in our cat informationarea would apply. Feline leukemia virus is one of the more common causes of fluid accumulationin the chest of cats. This can be chylothorax (accumulation of white bloodcells) or other effusions. In general the presence of fluid in the chestin combination with the history of feline leukemia is a poor prognosticsign. Many times a secondary tumor in the chest, associated with the felineleukemia, is causing the fluid accumulation. In this case

Preventing Feline Leukemia
Feline Leukemia
is perhaps the most devastating disease of domestic cats. The devastation is significant because the virus is easily transmitted from an infected feline through most body fluids. Fortunately, not all cats succumb to the invading virus; many can carry the virus their entire lives. Though these felines never become symptomatic, they can become carriers of the virus and are capable of transmitting the virus to other susceptible cats. Because of the carrier factor, many veterinarians recommend euthanizing the affected cats.
The Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is categorized as a retrovirus, the same is true of the AIDS virus (HIV). Non-retroviruses such as the Panleukopenia virus infiltrate body cells to replicate. When the new viruses are formed, the cells die and these new viruses seek other cellular havens to invade and continue to divide and multiply. The Feline Leukemia virus differs greatly from most feline viruses in that it is most diabolical. This fiendish organism invades the cells of the immune system, the white blood cells, the primary components of the cell-mediated immune system. Unlike the non-retroviruses, FeLV does not destroy the cells it inhabits. It negotiates with cell's nucleus (which contains DNA), enabling the virus to control the action of the cells and a home to grow and prosper. This retroviral invasion diminishes the replication of white blood cells, specifically, the T-cells, the brain trust of the immume system, or "quarterback", if you will.

URL of this page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/childhoodleukemia.html Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells. It is the most common type of childhood cancer. Your blood cells form in your bone marrow. White blood cells help your body fight infection. In leukemia, however, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These cells crowd out the healthy blood cells, making it hard for blood to do its work. Leukemia can develop quickly or slowly. Acute leukemia is a fast growing type while chronic leukemia grows slowly. Children with leukemia usually have one of the acute types. Risk factors for childhood leukemia include having a brother or sister with leukemia, having certain genetic disorders and having had radiation or chemotherapy. Treatment often cures childhood leukemia. Treatment options include chemotherapy, other drug therapy and radiation. In some cases bone marrow and blood stem cell transplantation might help. NIH: National Cancer Institute Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells. It is the most common type of childhood cancer.

Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the organs that make blood, namely the bone marrow (the soft inner part of the bone) and the lymph system. In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. The immature white blood cells are called leukocytes. In some individuals, leukocytes are so numerous that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. The ability to fight infection decreases because the leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen liver , and the brain , and spinal cord.

I hope this introduction finds you well and happy. I've created this site, www.life-celebrations.org , to ask for your support in helping me meet an important personal challenge. This year, I turn 50 (yes, that's a REALLY BIG number) and wanted to do something memorable to mark the occasion. Some people get tattoos, some get motorcycles, some jump out of airplanes...I decided to do something a little more altruistic by making a commitment to walk a 26.2 mile marathon ! This marathon is just one of more than 35 marathons across the country that sanction organizations to participate. The group I'm training with is the Team in Training , and the organization we support is the . Team in Training (TNT) is the #1 training program in the country today. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has made significant progress in the treatment of leukemia and is committed to finding a cure in our lifetime. The Society has been rated by "Money Magazine" as one of the top ten charities for having the highest percentage of funds raised to directly benefit research and family services. My personal goal is to raise over $5000 through this marathon.
