For Lewis and Clark, see Lewis and Clark (disambiguation) The famous map of Lewis and Clark's expedition. It changed mapping of northwest America by providing the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Columbia and Missouri rivers, and the Rocky Mountains. The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806) was the first overland expedition undertaken by the United States to the Pacific coast and back. The expedition team was headed by the United States Army soldiers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and assisted by George Drouillard who was half Shawnee and half French. The expedition's goal was to gain an accurate sense of the resources being exchanged in the Louisiana Purchase . The expedition laid much of the groundwork for the westward expansion of the United States.

In May, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on an amazing expedition across the Louisiana Territory. It has been nearly 200 years since then, and the bicentennial of their historic journey is rapidly approaching. These true American heroes faced unknown people, harsh conditions and unexplored lands to secure a place in history as two of the world's greatest explorers. One of the expedition's stops along the way was near present-day Yankton, South Dakota, and the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan has put together this site to celebrate Yankton's place in history as well as sites along the rest of the Lewis and Clark Trail. The reenactors are following the same route that Meriwether Lewis and his early recruits sailed (more accurately, rowed) after buying a 55 foot keelboat in Elizabeth, PA. He used that vessel and two pirogues in his exploration of the Louisiana Territory, west of the Mississippi from May 1804 until September 1806. Today this group of reenactors stopped at Pier 12 in Wellsburg. They were met by city officials, groups of adults and children from the local grade schools. These children had a wonderful day, learning history in such an interesting way! While at the pier, they gave a short demonstration, and answered questions from the audience. Ruby Greathouse from the Brooke County Museum was there in the costume/portraying Mrs. Miller who ran the Ordinary ( where the museum is now located) She is shown in the photo taking with the man that is portraying Meriwether Lewis. The group then went up to Brooke Cemetery to pay honor with a gun salute at the gravesite of Patrick Gass. The Expedition Begins
In 1804 a hopeful Thomas Jefferson sent Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to find the fabled River of the West. From the time of Columbus, explorers and statesmen had dreamed of a Northwest Passage, an all-water route connecting the trade routes of the Pacific to the Old World of the Atlantic. As president of a still-young nation, Jefferson had pressed for the Louisiana Purchase to strengthen American trade and settlement. The final $15 million-dollar agreement with France doubled America's size overnight.

Easier - The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806) sought an overland route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Harder - In February 1803 at the urging of then President Thomas Jefferson, Congress approved spending $2,500 (Final cost was $38,727) for a small U.S. Army expedition. Their assignment was to ascend the Missouri River to its source, cross the continental divide, and follow the Columbia River to its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson chose 28-year-old Meriwether Lewis as leader for the group he called the Corps of Discovery. Lewis selected a former army comrade, 32-year-old William Clark to be his co-leader. The expedition began May 14, 1804, as the group left Camp Wood River (Illinois). The expedition returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806. Lewis and Clark http://www.edgate.com/lewisandclark/
