Soon after Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801 he appointed Meriwether Lewis as his personal secretary. At this time Jefferson read about the adventures of Alexander Mackenzie . In his book, Voyages from Montreal , Mackenzie had described his two expeditions where he had tried to find a navigable route to the Pacific Ocean. For the next few months Jefferson and Lewis discussed the possibility of exploring these unknown lands. As part of his preparation, Lewis was sent to the University of Pennsylvania to study botany, natural history, medicine, mineralogy and celestial navigation. One of his tutors was Benjamin Rush, who asked Lewis to find out from the Native Americans about their burial customs, diet, medicines, breast feeding, bathing, crime and religious practices. On 18th January, 1803, President Jefferson requested permission from Congress to explore the vast lands to the west of the Mississippi. Jefferson claimed that there were "great supplies of fur and peltry" to be obtained from the Native Americans living in this area. He argued that the expedition would provide opportunities for "extending the external commerce of the United States". The following month Congress approved the venture that became known as the Corps of Discovery.

The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806) was the first American overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back.
The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 sparked the interest of United States in expansion to the west coast. A few weeks after the purchase, United States President Thomas Jefferson, an advocate of western expansion, had U.S. Congress appropriate $2500, "to send intelligent officers with ten or twelve men, to explore even to the western ocean". They were to study the Indian tribes, botany, geology, Western Terrain and wildlife in the region, as well as evaluate the potential interference of British and French-Canadian hunters and trappers who were already well established in the area. The expedition was not the first to cross North America, but was roughly a decade after the expedition of Alexander Mackenzie, the first European to cross North America by land north of Mexico, in 1793.
Jefferson selected Captain Meriwether Lewis to lead the Lewis and Clark expedition, afterwards known as the Corps of Discovery; Lewis selected

Since a long time was needed a way to the Pacific Ocean coast and since 1796 the Congress voted a resolutions to favourish the free trade with the Indians. At the end of the hostilities with England the conflict moved from the military level to the trade one. From the northern territories the English fur merchants moved themselves in the immense west territories in order to find more furs, main object of their trades with the Indians. Therefore was organized an expedition that, leaving Louisiana, had to reach Oregon in order to find a way to the Pacific and open a shorter and faster way to the far west than the one then used by the English.

From 1803-1806, in an exciting journey to the Pacific Ocean and back, Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery mapped the lands, described the natural wonders, and encountered the people of western North America. But, as Walter Kim wrote in Time, "If not for the . . . epic the captains scratched out while crouching on hillsides and squatting on riverbanks, we might not remember Lewis and Clark at all."
