Liberia Goodwill May Yield Tangible Dividends for Old Ally Thanks to widespread support for Liberia's fledgling post-conflict democracy in the U.S. Congress and within the Bush administration, several thousand Liberians living in the United States who are facing deportation in 60 days are likely to win a reprieve. Liberia is striving to recover from a quarter century of unrest, including 14 years of conflict that spilled into neighboring countries and killed or uprooted hundreds of thousands of people and left many stranded in the United States. Congressional backing has been growing for extending what is known as temporary protective status (TPS), which has allowed some 3600 Liberians and their families otherwise ineligible for immigration to the United States to stay to work here. President George Bush has signaled his support for an extension, despite a ruling last September by the Department of Homeland Security that TPS for Liberians would expire on October 1 this year. "Liberia needs time to rebuild and recover and is unfortunately not in a position to absorb and provide for an influx of refugees," President Ellen John Sirleaf said in an April letter seeking Congressional support.

Liberia is situated in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. The landscape in Liberia is characterised by mostly flat to rolling coastal plains, which rise to rolling plateau and low mountains in the northeast. The climate is hot and humid with a lot of rain fall. Winters are dry with hot days and cool to cold nights in Liberia. Summers are wet and cloudy with frequent heavy showers.
Liberia Weather is Hot, tropical climate with little variation in temperature. The wet season runs from May to October. The dry harmattan wind blows from December to March, making the coastal belt particularly arid. Lightweight cottons and linens are worn throughout the year, with waterproofing advised during the wet season.
Liberia was traditionally noted for its hospitality, academic institutions, cultural skills, and arts/craft works.
The population of over 3 million comprises 16 indigenous ethnic groups and various foreign minorities. Indigenous peoples comprise about 95% of the population, the largest of which are the Kpelle in central and western Liberia. Americo-Liberians, who are descendants of freed slaves that arrived in Liberia as of 1821, make up an estimated 5% of the population, of whom half from US origin and half from the Caribbean. There also is a sizable number of Lebanese, Indians, and other West African nationals who make up a significant part of Liberia's business community. A few whites (estimated at 18,000 in 1999; probably fewer now) reside in the country.

The IRC in Liberia
For over 15 years, Liberia was at the center of a number of interrelated civil wars in West Africa that resulted in some 250,000 deaths and the displacement of millions across the region. International peacekeepers arrived in 2003 to monitor a shaky peace agreement and prevent another slide back into violence. In the past five years, the country has been able to cautiously begin recovering and rebuilding following the devastation of such a long civil war. Hundreds of thousands of displaced families have returned to their homes, though thousands more continue to live in temporary camps in neighboring countries. The country now has a democratically elected government that has been in place since 2006.
How We Help
Since initiating emergency programs in 1996, the International Rescue Committee has maintained a constant presence in Liberia, providing urgently needed assistance to those displaced by violence. Today, we are one of the largest international humanitarian actors on the ground, working with communities to successfully reintegrate returning refugees, internally displaced persons and ex-combatants. IRC programs in Liberia currently focus on child protection and development, environmental health, medical services, gender-based violence programming, community development, education, and building employment opportunities.

About Advertise Archives ... Miss Liberia Donates Food Aid to Orphanages MONTSERRADO COUNTY Current Miss Liberia, Shu-rina R. Wiah, has visited and donated aid to two orphanages and at least one displaced center in Montserrado County. Wiah visited the Anna M. Enoch Orphanage in Upper Caldwell and the Golden Child Orphanage in VOA late July. She met with approximately 114 orphans between the ages of two and 18 on July 27, and donated about six 50-kg bags of rice, four cartons of candles each, detergents and Vaseline. The day-long orphanage tour ended at the Mount Barclay displaced center where she donated about three 50-kg bags of rice, one carton of candles each, soaps and Vaseline to the elderly people of the camp. Wiah was accompanied by some of her able lieutenants, who aided her as she dispensed items to the needy of Montserrado County. In an interview with a team of reporters, Wiah said her donations were based on her quest to be a role model for other young women; and being Miss Liberia, she said, affords her that opportunity. She spoke highly of education, calling it a medium for national development. Without education, she declared, the nation will not move forward.

http://www.africatravelling.net/liberia/monrovia/monrovia_culture.htm
Monrovia - Culture Liberia, its name derived from the Latin liber, meaning "free," was founded by freed American slaves in the early nineteenth century. The most important city is Monrovia and was named in honour of President Monroe, who held office at the time the Republic was officially established. Red, white, and blue mailboxes, American currency, and the widespread use of English bespeak the American influence, and it is not unlike visiting part of the U.S. in the summertime. As a political nation, Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society in an attempt to return freed slaves to Africa. Motives behind the society ranged from getting rid of "the negro problem" in America, to spreading religions, to sincerely returning blacks back to their native land. As a result, Liberia was heavily influenced by American culture. As you can see, the Liberian flag is very similar to the American flag. The capital city, Monrovia, was named after the fifth American President James Monroe who was a major supporter of the society. Even the Monrovia City police uniforms were modelled after ones used by the NYPD. Now Liberia is a mix of Liberians with a background in America, Americo-Liberians, and other peoples composing of many different tribal/kinship groups. Liberia has been disrupted by war that has lasted for about six years now. Many of these children were forced to become soldiers by combatants desperate for able bodies of any age to augment their ranks. Others volunteered, believing that joining a military faction was their best chance for survival, but rarely understanding the full consequences of their decision. Some became practiced killers, and most were exposed to atrocities on a daily basis, often encouraged to take part.
