Dewey Decimal System Invented in 1876 by Melvil Dewey, the Dewey Decimal System (DDS) organizes knowledge into 10 broad categories or classes. Each class is then broken into 10 divisions, and each division can be divided into 10 sections. Each subject is assigned a number - a "call number"
Our library, like most school libraries, uses the Dewey Decimal System (DDS) to organize our non-fiction books, and uses E for Easy Picturebooks, FIC for Fiction Chapter Books, and B for Biographies rather than use Mr. Dewey's actual numbers for these types of books. Can you do the Dewey? Trivia game, biographical information and an explanation of the DDS from the Middletown Thrall Library. The official DDS website from OCLC "Do We" Really Know Dewey? "Thinkquest" designed by sixth grade students. Help! I'm locked in the library! WebQuest from Barnstable, MA teachers for grades 4-6. Let's do Dewey! Training exercises for college student library helpers. Locating Information with the DDS Eugene, Oregon Information Literacy Website. Explains how to use call numbers, how to read decimal numbers, and Mr. Dewey's logic in formulating his system.

Big Brother/Big Sister
Each of our children is encouraged to develop their own unique talents. All younger children at St. A's have a mentor, a Big Brother or Sister, who will help shepherd the younger student through his or her first year. Community service is an important adjunct to our mission, and we provide many opportunities for our students to experience the world as a site for participation and contribution.
Computer/Library
Beginning in kindergarten, students are given the opportunity to use our computer lab on a regular basis. Our computer/library center, with 28 IMac computers, is a state-of-the-art facility. Children are taught basic computing skills including computer vocabulary. In addition, students learn word processing, database, spreadsheets, keyboarding, and multimedia presentations as well as beginning web page design. Our library is used by all students for story time, research skills and as a source for good reading material. Library skills activities are incorporated into our K-6 grade program. Learning to access and use information well gives our students a good basis for academic work in high school.
French
The French program begins in the first grade with once weekly instruction and continues through 8th grade, where students can elect to participate in a more intensive study of French. Students who have successfully completed the 8th grade course usually place into 2nd year French at the local high schools. In addition to reading, writing and speaking, all students are actively engaged in learning about French people and their customs. The study of French culture includes an opportunity to travel to France after 7th grade to experience French life first hand.
