Geography Home Page Liechtenstein Introduction Liechtenstein Background: The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719; it became a sovereign state in 1806. Until the end of World War I, it was closely tied to Austria, but the economic devastation caused by that conflict forced Liechtenstein to enter into a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral), the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth. Shortcomings in banking regulatory oversight have resulted in concerns about the use of the financial institutions for money laundering. Liechtenstein has, however, implemented new anti-money-laundering legislation and recently concluded a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with the US. Geography of Liechtenstein
The Principality of Liechtenstein is a beautiful landlocked country situated in Western Europe, bordering Switzerland and Austria. Liechtenstein is the sixth-smallest independent nation in the world in terms of area, and its territory covers only 160,465 square kilometres. It's also the smallest German-speaking country in the world. WBesides being a popular tourist destination, the country is also known as a tax haven. Liechtenstein is part of the Upper Rhine River valley and its landscape is characterised by small farms and many cultivated fields. It is also part of the Alps, which makes it a great place for practicing winter sports. The highest point in the country is Grauspitz (259 meters). The climate in Liechtenstein is mild thanks to the warm southern winds. It's characterized by cold winters with frequent snowfall, while the summers are humid and warm. The population of Liechtenstein is primarily ethnic Alemannic, which comprise one-third of the total. The other two thirds are made up of foreign-born people. The average life expectancy in Liechtenstein is almost 80 years. The educational system is among the ten best in the world. The official language in the country is German. Approximately 88% of the population is Christian, of which 76% are Roman Catholic and 7% are Protestant.
