The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) defines light pollution as: Any adverse effect of artificial light including sky glow glare light trespass light clutter , decreased visibility at night, and energy waste. Such an approach confuses the cause and its result, however. Pollution is the adding-of/added light itself, in analogy to added sound, CO etc. Adverse consequences are multiple, some of them may be not known yet. Real definitions are to be, therefore, like: Alteration of natural light levels in the outdoor environment owing to artificial light sources.

A Solution for the Problem of Light Pollution
by
Ashley Knowles
In association with the Manchester Astronomical Society
Introduction
As we approach the millenium, most amateur astronomers are acutely aware of the problems of light pollution and the difficulties associated with observing the night sky in heavily populated areas. They also probably feel that things will only get worse.
Light pollution is a rather all-encompassing expression describing the light which hinders observation. It has several sources, including natural ones such as the light generated by the bombardment of the upper atmosphere by solar radiation. However, the most pervasive source of light pollution is the glare associated with the street lighting in built up areas. Short of moving house, there is little the individual urban amateur astronomer can do to eliminate this problem. There is some hope, however. Filtering the light pollution and viewing only the wavelengths of light of interest is one way of achieving good results.
A recent lecture at Manchester Astronomical Society illustrated the manufacturing technology which is used to make filters to reject the unwanted light. This brief paper describes the efforts under way in Manchester to make routine light pollution filtering a realistic goal.

Light pollution is excess or obtrusive light created by human s. Among other effects, it causes adverse health effects, obscures most star s to city dwellers, interferes with astronomical observatories , wastes energy and disrupts ecosystem s. Light pollution can be construed to have two main branches: (a) annoying light that intrudes on an otherwise natural or low light setting and (b) excessive light, generally indoors, that leads to worker discomfort and adverse health effects. Since the early , a global dark-sky movement has emerged, with concerned people campaigning to reduce the amount of light pollution. Light pollution is a side effect of industrial civilization. It comes from sources such as building exterior and interior lighting advertising commercial properties ... office s, factories streetlight s, and lit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Light pollution is a type of pollution . It is defined as “any adverse (or bad) effect as a result of man-made lights.” Usually, this means too much light. Several species , including plants and humans, are badly affected by light pollution. Most people have never heard of light pollution, and those who have usually don’t care, or do anything about it. Light pollution costs Americans billions of dollars every year.

    • Sky glow Light trespass Over-illumination Clutter Glare
Sky glow usually has more of an effect on the environment than light trespass and glare, but all of them are a major problem to people today. Sky glow is the kind of light pollution that prevents people from seeing the moon and the stars. This causes birds to not be able to migrate to the right place because they can't follow the moon and stars. Sky glow also prevents astronomers from making discoveries. Light trespass is when light being used by a person goes into the property of another. Though light trespass is not an environmental issue, it is still light pollution.

This can also cause sleep disorders in some people who rest with too many lights on, whether it is the television or light entering through a window. Nocturnal creatures may be affected by light pollution since it may give them less dark hours in which to hunt or mate.

Light Pollution At the beginning of the 21 st century, humanity is losing a valuable and beautiful part of its heritage. For the first time in history, poorly designed and badly aimed lighting is denying vast numbers of humanity a view of the night sky. Urban sky glow now pollutes nearly all of Britain's night skies. As amateur astronomers we have a responsibility to guard our night time environment against light pollution. What is light pollution? Light pollution is the popular name for sky glow - a brightening of the night sky caused by the scattering of artificial light by aerosol particles (e.g. water droplets) and dust in the air. What causes light pollution? Artificial light gets up into the sky in two ways. By far the greater proportion of upward light arises because the design or installation of many light fittings allows a significant fraction of the light produced to be emitted above the horizontal, so it goes up into the sky - this is the direct upward light. A much smaller proportion is upward light is reflected upwards from roads, pavements and buildings - this is the indirect upward light. The following image of the Earth at night compiled by NASA from various spacecraft missions shows the extent of light pollution across the whole world: few areas of our planet are visibly dark at night!

What's that?" The best way to describe Light Pollution is to give you a couple of examples. While driving on any highway or road at night, do you have to squint from the glare as you approach street lights? Does the street light in front of your house shine into your windows to the point where you need the blinds down to sleep at night? Does your neighbors light on his back porch light up YOUR back yard? When you look up at the sky on a cloudy night, can you see the clouds? Well if you've answered yes to any of these questions you've experienced light pollution. What are the adverse impacts of poor night time lighting?
  • Urban Sky Glow : Just because we're 50+ miles from NYC doesn't mean we're rural anymore. Look around! Urban sky glow is destroying the rural look of Hunterdon County and our view of the universe. We don't live in the clouds; we don't need to light them. Direct Glare : Direct glare is defined as the visual discomfort resulting from insufficiently shielded light sources in the field of view. One should "see the effect, not the light source". Use of the term "direct glare" is recommended in lieu of the word "glare" alone. The direct glare definition means if you can see an unshielded lamp, or the luminaire maximum candlepower zone, you may well have glare. However, usually when you are near a luminaire, you will see these parameters, of course. So a reasonable definition limiting the field of view is required.

Artificial light is essential in our modern society. It has many uses including illumination of streets, roads and hazardous areas; for security lighting; to increase the hours of usage for outdoor sports and recreation facilities, to enhance the appearance of buildings at night.
The increased use of lighting, however, can cause problems. Light in the wrong place at the wrong time can be intrusive. There has been an increase in complaints about light to local authorities in recent years.
Find out more about the different aspects of light pollution, the steps that can be taken to reduce it and what you can do if faced with the problem of pollution from light.
    What is lighting?
Lighting is simply a means of illumination and apart from rare instances of glare only really becomes a problem after dark. It is measured in lux and is a product of both the luminous intensity (brightness) of the lamp used and the distance from the lamp to the surface being lit.

An unfortunate side affect of growth and development is increased levels of "light pollution" light which doesn't serve its intended purpose of providing safety and convenience. Instead, it spills outward and upward from poorly designed or inefficient light fixtures, trespassing on surrounding properties and polluting the skies. "Light pollution" includes:

Stargazers have been battling the effects of light pollution for many years as more areas are being overcrowded by urban sprawl. Light pollution is the unwanted consequence of outdoor lighting. The two main concerns to astronomers are sky glow (the brighting of the sky caused by outdoor lighting and natural atmospheric and celestial factors) and the other concern is light trespass. Light trespass is unwanted light usually caused by street lighting, a neighbor's backyard light or other light fixture. Sky glow is composed of five different sources from the sunlight being reflected off the moon and the earth, from the faint air glow in the in the upper atmosphere. As well as sunlight reflected off interplanetary dust and starlight scattered throughout the atmosphere and the background light from faint, unresolved stars and nebula. The effects of sky glow are a high concern to amateur astronomers and professional astronomers alike because of the reduced ability to view celestial objects in the night sky.

The interest for the protection of the night sky from light pollution is growing every day. A global scale periodic monitoring of the situation is necessary. Nighttime images of the Earth at night have been obtained from the Defense Metereological Satellite Program (DMSP) of the US Air Force since early '70. The first global image was obtained by Woodruff Sullivan in late '80. These images only showed the geographic distribution of the sources on the Earth surface because the satellite detectors were saturated by the strong flux emitted by them and no quantitative measurements were possible. Since 1998 unsaturated data become available, allowing quantitative measurements of the upward light flux emitted by sources.

      Light Pollution
Published: June 14, 2004 New Yorkers know all too well the effect of light pollution the bright orange glow that floats above every city in the state at night. That glow represents wasted energy, light that should be focused downward from outdoor lighting but that is actually emitted skyward. It costs us real money, and it also costs us something more intangibly valuable, a chance to see the night sky in all its glory. There is a good opportunity to do something about this. The State Senate Rules Committee has in its hands a bill that would call for the use of fully shielded outdoor lamps designed to concentrate light on the ground and not in the sky. The Assembly has already passed an identical version of it. The Rules Committee should send the bill to the Senate for passage and and on to Gov. George Pataki. There has been a fair amount of misunderstanding about what this bill might mean. It sets energy and light pollution standards for outdoor lighting and calls for the gradual replacement, where feasible, of conventional lighting with new lamps designed to keep light from being thrown upward or outward where it isn't wanted. The two major concerns are, of course, cost and security. New York City has objected to this bill on the mistaken assumption that it would be required to double the number of streetlights. But actual installations have demonstrated that the increase is likely to be closer to 5 percent. The city is conducting a competition for a new streetlight design, and it would make a real difference in night-sky visibility and long-term energy savings if those new lights were fully shielded. There is obviously no inherent reason a lamp that projects most of its light downward should reduce lighting security.

Guidelines for the reduction of light pollution Introduction General guidelines Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Security lighting ... Exemptions, Glossary and references The Maltese Islands possess a rich architectural heritage and a uniquely beautiful scenic environment. At night, outdoor artificial lighting has become an integral component of this built and natural environment. Thus it is important that such illumination is intelligently planned to complement this environment, is subtle and avoids overlighting, and provides a cohesive appearance for our cities and their neighbourhoods. Safety and security for persons and property are also of paramount concern, and it is necessary to recognise the importance of quality of light versus quantity. And in order to preserve and enhance the unique qualities of the Maltese Islands’ rural and urban neighbourhoods and their visual environment, it is essential to encourage the highest quality of outdoor night-time lighting through the adoption of lighting standards. This is further corroborated through the widely used British Standard BS 5489, which states that " Light above the horizontal should be minimised in all installations, as it is wasteful, can be intrusive, and increases sky glow

    Light Pollution?
Have you lost it? Your view of the nighttime sky that is. If you live in a large city, you may have lost most of your view of the night sky and the rest of the universe for that matter. Light pollution is caused by our ever expanding cities as people build and install lots of outdoor lighting in their communities. Safety at night is important, however, this "urban sky glow" is light that is being wasted, above and beyond safety and security. It prevents us from seeing the Milky Way and some places are now limited to seeing only Polaris, the north star, and a few other select bright stars. Luckily comet Hale-Bopp was bright enough to see from our homes, but you may miss other spectacular celestial events like meteor showers. Most amateur urban stargazers must travel far from the big city to see constellations or planets. This human-caused glare from earth actually causes problems for professional astronomers as light traveling to earth from remote parts of other galaxies is lost even to high powered ground-based telescopes. Light pollution is a wasteful use of energy and money. You can prevent this pollution by getting involved in your community. Most people don't even know about this problem and education will be an important factor in changing people's habits. There's a lot that can be done without cutting down on safety, security, or utility. Here are a few examples:
