Today they are windows into our nautical past, filled with folklore and stories of shipwrecks, heroism, romance and, some say, ghosts. There's Boston Light , the oldest lighthouse in America, established in 1716. Highland Light on Cape Cod, the first light seen on a voyage from Europe to Boston. Scituate Light , the oldest lighthouse in the U.S. with attached living quarters. There are so many more, and we welcome you to come explore, learn about and experience our wondrous array of historic beacons, located up and down our coastlines.

National Park Service Historic Lighthouse Preservation Handbook Back to Lighthouse Heritage
[Site Under Construction]
The Historic Lighthouse Preservation Handbook was created through a cooperative partnership between the National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard , Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program, and U.S. Lighthouse Society. The 328-page preservation manual, released in August 1997, focuses primarily on the maintenance problems associated with the many different materials and construction techniques used in these unique structures. In addition to sections devoted to preservation treatments, it includes a brief history of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and lighthouse construction types; existing historic preservation laws, standards, and guidelines; case studies for both lighthouse rehabilitation and restoration projects; related activities (interpretation, funding, safety management, etc.); and sources for more information. (See Table of Contents for more information on content.)

46. East Quoddy Lighthouse
Information from The Friends of The Head Harbour Lightstation on this lighthouse located on Campobello Island, New Brunswick.
http://www.campobello.com/lighthouse/index.html
T owering majestically on the eastern tip of Campobello Island
stands the "East Quoddy Lighthouse" also more familiar to
everyone as the "Head Harbour Lighthouse" . An isolated home
in years past, to the many lightkeepers and their families, it stands
now unmanned. A victim of technology hovering on the brink of a
fate that has befallen other monuments of it's own kind. Proudly
looking out over the Bay of Fundy the most photographed
lighthouse in the world.
What will be it's fate........we wonder.
"The Friends of The Head Harbour Lightstation" , a concerned
group of local residents, has rallied together to pick up the
torch in a wholehearted attempt to preserve, protect and promote this irreplaceable piece of history.

East Quoddy Lighthouse
Locally known as Head Harbour
Light , the East Quoddy Lighthouse
stands as it had for many years
looking out over the trecherous
waters of the Bay Of Fundy
Although now automated, it once
housed the Light Keeper and his
family. Accessible only 1 1/2 hours
before and 1 hour after low tide, it
presented a challenge to all of the occupants and visitors alike. Today it remains a welcome site, or sound depending on the fog, to fishermen returning to port. Each year it attracts thousands of curious visitors. Many take the time to venture across at low tide, up and down steel ladders, over the jagged rocks and slippery sea weed, to get a close look at what remains one of the most photographed Lighthouse in the world It is also a popular vantage point for Whale Watching The tremendous tidesof the Bay Of Fundy churn and swirl at it'srocky base.

    http://www.hudsonlights.com/
Home Page Lighthouses and the Mighty Hudson From the moment of Hendrik Hudson's trip up the mighty river until today, the Hudson River is one of the most important commercial and recreational rivers in America. Hundreds of cargo ships ply its waters and thousands of pleasure craft skip along its waves. The majestic Hudson transports the goods of America from the inland ports out to the greatest deep water port in the country, New York Harbor. In the early history of the continent, great sailing ships drove the economy of the Colonies as they transported goods from the frontiers of North America down the Hudson to England and beyond. As America became a nation, the mighty Hudson became the central battleground of the Revolution, with the pivotal battle of the Revolution being fought on its banks in Saratoga. With America growing and its economy booming, the connection between the Hudson River and the western inland territories was made with the Erie Canal and commercial shipping traffic exploded. Even today in this age of instant air travel the Hudson serves as the primary commercial artery between the Port of New York and the regions upstate. Great barges and tankers filled with goods travel up and down the river keeping the Empire State moving and thriving. The traditions of industry first established in America on the banks of the Hudson continue to thrive feeding the Hudson with a continual flow of goods going to market.
