The ongoing, innovative research carried out by the linguistics faculty and graduate students is contributing substantially to what is known about the structure and use of sign languages. ASL is not only the subject of faculty and student research, but also the language of communication in the classroom. In order to learn about how languages work, students must study specific languages. In a typical linguistics degree program the languages studied are produced by activity in the vocal tract. In our program, students study both vocally produced and signed languages, with considerable emphasis on ASL. This provides students with a broad understanding of language with a specialist's understanding of ASL. The department's M.A. degree program is appropriate for students seeking linguistic knowledge as a foundation for work in such allied professional fields as language teaching, interpreter education, language planning, bilingual education, and language assessment. Students who complete the M.A. program may apply to pursue a Ph.D. in a range of theoretical and applied areas related to sign language in the department's Ph.D. program established in 2002.

22. Emily's Introduction To Historical Linguistics
A brief summary of the subject of comparative linguistics.
http://www.mit.edu/~ejhanna/language/histlang.html
Introduction to Historical Linguistics
Historical linguistics is the study of not only the history of languages, as the name implies, but also the study of how languages change, and how languages are related to one another. It might seem at first that this would be a rather dull, uneventful field of study, but that is far from the truth. Historical linguistics is full of lively debate and controversy (I'll point out controvercial things when they come), and occasionally some nasty words are thrown around. The main job of historical linguists is to learn how languages are related. Generally, languages can be shown to be related by having a large number of words in common that were not borrowed (cognates). Languages often borrow words from each other, but these are usually not too difficult to tell apart from other words. When a related group of languages has been studied in enough detail, it is possible to know almost exactly how most words, sounds, and grammar rules have changed in the languages.
History of historical linguistics
People have thought about the origin of languages for a long, long time. Like other early looks into nature and the universe, the early ideas about language where at best obvious (realizing that two very similar languages were related) or lucky guesses, at worst dead wrong, and almost always ethno-centric (only paying attention to nearby languages. This, of course, wasn't always their fault, since communication was so slow. However, for example, the Greeks simply considered most languages in Europe to be "Barbarian", even though there were certainly several distinct "Barbarian" languages).

Of all the skills that human beings possess, language is the most quintessentially human. The practices and institutions that we take for granted, such as law, religion and science, would not be possible if not for the communication of symbolic and abstract meanings that language makes easy. No other animal has anything even approximating human language, and this is no doubt the reason for the complete absence of such institutions even among our closest relatives, the great apes. In spite of the fact that we all use language intensively each day and are constantly surrounded by its spoken and written forms, most of us are completely unaware of its true nature and structure. This is because it is so close for us, so much a part of our daily lives, that we use it unconsciously. It is a skill we take for granted like riding a pushbike or driving a car. But this easy, largely unconscious skill is very deceptive, for all human languages are highly complex systems for communication, with greatly elaborated structures and rules. Linguistics is the discipline that takes language as its particular object of study, to uncover its structures and rules and to understand how these are used in human acts of communication. Linguistics studies the full range of aspects of human language. It investigates the phonetics, grammar and semantics of individual languages, but through this seeks to uncover the features common to all human languages, the 'linguistic universals'. These are equivalent to the set of constraints on what is a possible human language, the so-called universal grammar. Various linguistic theories have been proposed which attempt to characterise this underlying structure of all languages; these theories are then used as a guide for the description of individual languages and revised accordingly. Languages which seem on first view to be very different may turn out, on closer scrutiny, to share many important deeper similarities in terms of their overall structural patterning.

Major in Linguistics
There are two tracks in this major, Track A (designed to give students familiarity with a broad range of subject areas in linguistics), and Track B (particularly appropriate for students planning to go on to graduate school). In addition, undergraduates have the option of working out with the undergraduate advisor a variant tailored to their particular needs.
Did you know that when you double major, you can count GEC courses both for your major and for GEC credit? This is an effective way of enhancing your academic record and making yourself more competitive on the job market. Doing a double major is a smart decision!
Combined B.A./M.A.

Students who have completed at least 135 hours of course work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50, and have completed all GEC requirements for the B.A. (or will have met these criteria by the end of the junior year) should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor in Linguistics about the advisability of applying for this program.

Linguistics at Indiana University
The field of linguistics is concerned with the study of human language as a universal part of human behavior and thinking. Linguists seek to understand the common properties of human language, the place of language in human life and society, and the ways in which language is organized to fulfill the needs of the people it serves and the functions it performs. They take as their field of inquiry language in all its different forms and manifestations around the world.
