An Interdepartmental Program
in the College of Arts and Science
Linguistics is the study of human language. It seeks to understand and explain the social, psychological, and structural properties of human language in a clear and formal manner. Although specialists often know more than one language, such knowledge is complementary rather than essential. A major in linguistics offers students a liberal education and prepares them for graduate study in linguistics or related fields; it also develops the verbal and analytical skills that are valuable in a wide variety of professional careers. Graduate degrees are not offered, but a Graduate Minor in Linguistics can be taken. MA and PhD degree programs with emphasis in linguistics and language are available in some cooperating departments. The linguistics area program is staffed by faculty from various departments. Supporting course work may include foreign language, literature, psychology, philosophy, English, education, speech, anthropology or South Asian studies. Financial aid , when available, is arranged through the participating departments.

SIGANN ACL Special Interest Group for Annotation SIGANN is a Special Interest Group of the Association for Computational Linguistics for researchers concerned with all aspects of linguistic annotation of language resources. Its activities include:
  • The exchange and propagation of research results with respect to the annotation, manipulation and exploitation of annotated language resources, taking into account different applications and theoretical investigations in the field of language technology and research; Working towards harmonization and interoperability of linguistic annotations from the perspective of the increasingly large number of tools and frameworks tht support the creation, instantiation, manipulation, and exploitation of annotated resources; Working towards consensus on all issues critical to the advancement of the field of language resource annotation;
  • sponsorship of the annual Linguistic Annotation Workshop
The Fourth Linguistic Annotation Workshop (LAW IV) will be held in July 2010 in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL 2010) in Sweden.

      Welcome to the Department of Linguistics!
      In our undergraduate courses, we bring linguistics to a range of students, emphasizing our connection to such diverse areas as computer science, psychology, and philosophy; anthropology, education, and the foreign languages. At the graduate level, we have strengths in phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics"core" fields that provide a foundation for the study of linguistic form and meaningas well as in research areas that build on that foundation, including anthropological linguistics, psycho- and neuro-linguistics, computational linguistics, documentary linguistics, and the linguistics of signed languages. We take the view that training in all areas of linguistics requires a thorough grounding in the core. We also believe that research in the core is enhanced by building connections to broader research areas outside that core. In recent years, we have expanded our offerings in computational linguistics, the documentation and description of the indigenous languages of Latin America, child language development, and the study of signed languages including American Sign Language. We are uniquely able to realize our vision of linguistics as a varied field that embraces many aspects of language.

Linguistics at Cornell
Linguistics as a formal field of study at Cornell dates back to 1946. Ours is a diverse but highly interactive department. We offer one of the top Indo-European comparative linguistics programs in the country, and also have a leading-edge computational linguistics lab, a phonetics lab, and active research groups on topics including the syntax/prosody interface and the relation of language spread to rice agriculture. Cornell linguists do in-depth empirical work on languages ranging from Cheyenne to Yiddish. Our research emphasizes the theoretical bases for that work, in syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics, and historical linguistics.
