Linux Operating System
The Linux operating system is an open source system. Just like Windows, the operating system (or OS) interacts with the hardware and software you install. There are many types of Linux distribution systems, each with their own distinct features. How Linux Works Linux is written in a language code that allows your computer and software written for it to run. For computer programs to run on the OS, it must be written for it specifically. Most computer programs are written for specific platforms (i.e., for Windows, Linux or Mac), but some can run on multiple platforms. Differences with Windows Unlike Windows, Linux is an open source system. This means its source code can be accessed by the public. Other programmers can examine and work on it. This allows programmers to develop patches and add improvements to the operating system. There are other benefits. An open source system makes it easy to develop software for it. In turn, the open source programs can be tested and scrutinized by other programmers. In contrast, the Windows source code is not available to the public. Another basic difference is that Windows is a standalone system, while Linux is based on UNIX.

Development of Linux
1986 Linus (Benedict) Torvalds programmed its own driver for its floppy controller. He learned intensively hardware programming and became better knowledge about his Sinclair computer with Q-DOS. Additionally he provided his own programmer Tools. When 1991 the 386-Intel PC became modern, he got one PC to learn about the programming of 386 CPUs. As operating system the Unix derivate MINIX was used, he has know Unix already since 1990 from its university. Minix was developed by Andrew Tanenbaum as learning system and was particularly used at universities. The written book from A. Tanenbaum "Operating Systems: Design and Implementation" is about operating system concepts and Minix, which became the favourite book from Torvalds. The source code of Minix is open source, any modifications are bound to the license conditions.

You can download this very first try of making a podcast from: Switching from CentOS to Slackware
Print from the command line
ggarron in This is a small old tip, but I want to share it here, in case it may be useful for someone. Also as a note to myself, as I usually forget how to do it. I usually like to print from the command line, when I am editing latex documents , programming, or creating markdown . I usually use vim to edit this kind of files.
How to attach a GNU screen session

GNU screen attach
The scenario where I use screen the most, is when I need to run a long process in a remote server, like compiling something on Gentoo, downloading a lot of files, rsyncing, etc. I can open a ssh session and run the command, but in that case I need to leave my local computer on, and there is the risk that for some reason the session could terminate and in that case the running application will also be terminated.

Linux, alternative to Windows Linux Operating SystemLinux is really a neat O/S and worth your consideration.

    Linux Operating System
Home Linux Linux Operating System -Linux is really a neat O/S and worth your consideration. I have just recently stumbled upon Linux and learning more about it daily. Most people only know Windows and nothing else, there's more folks! Linux offers more versatility than Windows and seems to run forever without fail.
    Genesis
-A man by the name of Linus Torvalds came up with this operating system in 1991. Apparently he was not happy with his new 386 IBM machine and wanted a better O/S for the hardware. He the decided to run Unix on his machine but Unix was far from being cheap, thus spawns the Linux kernal.
    The Good
-Linux is highly customizable and FREE first off. You can trick it out the way you like it. Linux is also very, very stable to work with. You wont need to reboot it periodically like Windows. Another good mark on Linux is its developed by programmers all over the world, making it better every day.
    The Bad
-Linux for the common PC user isn't easy to use as you would think. Though its always getting better and has a million tools available it very different. It does however offer a GUI (Graphical User Interface) like Windows but still doesn't seem to have the ease of use like Windows. I will be the first to admit that Linux is a better O/S but not as easy to use as Windows. Another sad part about Linux is its not widely supported and popular as Windows is. This isn't just prone to Linux but all O/S. This is part of the reason Microsoft is in Court every week, I thinks its called a Monopoly? haha..

The licensing also lets you freely distribute the software along with the source code. How to Install Ubuntu There are many Linux based operating systems, but Ubuntu is the most popular. Its configuration makes it easy for new users to get accustomed to the system quickly. Here is how you can install it. Step 1 Download the operating system from the Net. It is free. You can also ask for a free CD so you can restore it. Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Enter the appropriate information in the form. Step 6 Restart the computer and if you have Ubuntu and Windows, choose which to boot. If Ubuntu is the only OS installed, the computer will reboot automatically. How to Install Applications in Linux Operating Systems The process will vary depending on the Linux distribution. For Ubuntu, follow these steps. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 For Fedora, use the following method.

    The Linux Operating System
Linux is a powerful, non-proprietary, standards-based operating system that is currently the fastest growing computer operating system on the planet. Linux offers speed, performance, stability, and reliability that rivals (or surpasses ) that of commercial operating systems costing hundreds or thousands of dollars. Linux contains all the features required of modern desktop PCs, corporate file servers, firewalls, routers, and Internet servers. Its install base is conservatively estimated at over 10,000,000, and is growing at a rate of approximately 3% per week. In fact, Linux market share surged by 212 percent in 1998, and it is the only non-proprietary operating system that is currently demonstrating positive growth. Since it is made available under the GNU Public License as an open source product, Linux may be downloaded free of charge via the Internet, or purchased for a small fee on CD-ROM. Although Linux was originally designed to operate only on Intel-based PCs, portable and modular coding has allowed it to become increasingly hardware independent. Today, Linux operates on an impressive and growing list of hardware platforms . On the low-end, it powers IBM's
