Strategies to Improve Elementary Listening Comprehension Listening Comprehension Definition: Listening Comprehension is an aggregate measure of listening ability and verbal comprehension. Strategies for Teaching Students with a Listening Comprehension Deficit: Preferential Seating – The student should sit close to and face the speaker. Reduce Distractions – This should be done especially when teaching new concepts or giving instructions. Clear Simple Directions – The teacher should speak slowly and with a minimum amount of words. Visual Aids – Overheads, Videos, Pictures, Graphic Organizers, etc. should be used. Increased Student Response Time – Allow the student to have extended time to answer questions. Have The Student Repeat the Instructions – Have the student repeat the directions aloud (fade to silently). Ask “What are you going to do?” Use W H Questions – Use Questions like Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, and How Much. Awareness of Auditory Exhaustion – Keep lessons to a maximum of 20 minutes in the beginning of the day while varying instructional strategies. Students learn best when taught in the morning.

Introduction: Spanish Proficiency Exercises
University of Texas at Austin Spanish Proficiency Exercises is a compilation of brief video clips in which native speakers of Spanish from various locations throughout Latin America and Spain demonstrate various language tasks. The objective of the exercises is to provide students of Spanish with the necessary tools to be able to talk about the same topics in Spanish. In order to do, this Spanish Proficiency Exercises contains five major components. First, there is a simplified video clip. This simplified version is scripted, the native speakers talks slower, and he or she uses simpler words and less slang. Second, there are video clips of native speakers who also perform the proficiency tasks. These clips are not scripted. What the native speakers say is what they really said. Some may talk fast, others talk slow, and some have specific regional dialects. Third, to help perform the same task, we provide a Spanish/English glossary of vocabulary words that students may need in order to talk about the topic. Fourth, we also provide sample sentences that one may want to use in order to talk about the topic. Finally, we offer a brief, mini-grammar explanation on some grammar principle that is related to the proficiency topic. After reviewing the simplfied version, the vocabulary, the phrases, the grammar, and the video clips of the native speakers, we believe that students will be more prepared to perform the same proficiency tasks.

Introduction
Being able to listen well is an important part of communication for everyone. For our students, guided practice by a teacher is one of the best ways to improve this skill. A student with good listening comprehension skills will be able to participate more effectively in communicative situations. What follows is an exploration of areas that language teachers may find useful in their classroom and when preparing listening materials.
Teaching the skill of listening cannot be emphasized enough in a communicative classroom. For second language learners, developing the skill of listening comprehension is extremely important. Students with good listening comprehension skills are better able to participate effectively in class (Brown, 2001).
The Purpose Should Be Made Clear to the Students
When the learning objective of a language class is explained to students, they can better focus on specific vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice, listening for different purposes, and so on. This clear explanation by the teacher of a lesson's pedagogic goals will help learners to further develop specific objectives in a shorter amount of time. For instance, by informing students that the lesson will be about giving directions, they can consciously focus on remembering the vocabulary used in that activity.

    Listening comprehension skill
    Introduction
Listening comprehension is the receptive skill in the oral mode. When we speak of listening what we really mean is listening and understanding what we hear. In our first language, we have all the skills and background knowledge we need to understand what we hear, so we probably aren't even aware of how complex a process it is. Here we will briefly describe some of what is involved in learning to understand what we hear in a second language. Listening Situations There are two kinds of listening situations in which we find ourselves:
    • interactive, and non-interactive.
Interactive listening situations include face-to-face conversations and telephone calls, in which we are alternately listening and speaking, and in which we have a chance to ask for clarification, repetition, or slower speech from our conversation partner. Some non-interactive listening situations are listening to the radio, TV, films, lectures, or sermons. In such situations we usually don't have the opportunity to ask for clarification, slower speech or repetition. Micro-skills Richards (1983, cited in

Teaching Listening A. The Importance of Listening 1. Listening is the most common communicative activity in daily life: "we can expect to listen twice as much as we speak, four times more than we read, and five times more than we write." (Morley, 1991, p. 82) 2. Listening is also important for obtaining comprehensible input that is necessary for language development. B. What is involved in listening comprehension? speech perception (e.g., sound discrimination, recognize stress patterns, intonation, pauses, etc.) word recognition (e.g., recognize the sound pattern as a word, locate the word in the lexicon, retrieve lexical, grammatical and semantic inforamtion about the word, etc.) sentence processing (parsing; e.g., detect sentence constituents, building a structure frame, etc.) construct the literal meaning of the sentence (select the relevant meaning in case of ambiguous word) hold the inforamtion in short-term memory recognize cohesive devices in discourse infer the implied meaning and intention (speech act) predict what is to be said decide how to respond Bottom-up Top-down Conclusion: listening is not a passive process. It involves both bottom-up and top-down processes and requires the use of non-linguistic as well as linguistic knowledge.

Listening Comprehension: Put Down the Grammar Book and Open Your Ears
When people start to learn a language, listening comprehension comes second to vocabulary and English grammar. But many beginner and intermediate learners have realized that they do not understand as much as they would like when people speak in English. Should you focus on grammar before you improve your esl listening skills? How do humans learn their first languages? We sit in our diapers and listen to it for about two years, without saying a word. Then we start to mimic, learn constructions, vocabulary, expressions etc. Why shouldn't it be the same for adults? Some believe that the learning process is different in Children and in adults. I tend to disagree and feel that we can all learn a great deal by passive listening even as beginners.
