Course Description
This course is designed to help students in doctoral programs write a literature review that is appropriate for a dissertation or thesis proposal. The course will emphasize skills for writing the Problem Statement and conducting and writing the Review of Literature. Even though the Procedures section is an important part of the dissertation proposal, it will not be dealt with extensively in this class. Other courses which deal specifically with the appropriate design, analysis, and interpretation issues which the student will use for his or her research should be taken prior to this course. Substantial time will be devoted to critiquing previously written Literature Reviews as a way of helping the student understand what differentiates between a well-written and poorly-written literature review. Literature Reviews
It is very common for students to have to write literature reviews , especially students enrolled in English courses. In general, literature reviews are very specific types of academic writing that can be difficult for many students to master. Therefore, students should learn as much as they can about how to write an effective literature review if they are required to write reviews for their courses. One of the reasons that literature reviews can be so difficult for many students is because literature reviews require that students provide their own input on a literary work. Many students do not feel confident enough to write an effective literature review if they do not feel that they have a mastery of the English language. Therefore, it is important for students to develop their confidence before writing the review. Students may be able to develop their confidence by reviewing different literary techniques and terms that they may come across by reviewing a piece of literature. For example, if students understand how to use setting to influence a story, then students may have an easier time reviewing a work in which setting plays a key role. Once a student understands more about how to use literary devices, students should apply their understandings of these devices to the literary work that they need to review. Many students are assigned a particular literary work. However, some students may be able to select their own literary works for the review.

15 November 2010 Researchers discover key mutation in acute myeloid leukemia Mutations in a single gene could be the reason for poor survival rates among sufferers of acute myeloid leukemia. Researchers in the USA made the discovery after they decoded the DNA of a woman who died of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). They found that newly-discovered mutations in a single gene, called DNA methyltransferase 3A or DNMT3A, are responsible for treatment failure in a significant number of AML patients. It is hoped the finding, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, will help doctors to tailor treatment for patients and provide a molecular target against which to develop new drugs. After the team at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis found the mutations, they used targeted DNA sequencing on nearly 300 AML patient samples to confirm that they correlated with the disease. The literature review
What is a literature review?
According to Cooper (1988) '... a literature review uses as its database reports of primary or original scholarship, and does not report new primary scholarship itself. The primary reports used in the literature may be verbal, but in the vast majority of cases reports are written documents. The types of scholarship may be empirical, theoretical, critical/analytic, or methodological in nature. Second a literature review seeks to describe, summarise, evaluate, clarify and/or integrate the content of primary reports.' The review of relevant literature is nearly always a standard chapter of a thesis or dissertation. The review forms an important chapter in a thesis where its purpose is to provide the background to and justification for the research undertaken (Bruce 1994) . Bruce, who has published widely on the topic of the literature review, has identified six elements of a literature review. These elements comprise a list; a search; a survey; a vehicle for learning; a research facilitator; and a report

Literature Reviews
A literature review is an evaluation of the current literature on a specific topic that is being researched. The literature review should describe, summarize, and clarify the literature being reviewed. A literature review should be more than just writing about the current literature on a topic. It should give information that can be read, analyzed, and evaluated. The purpose of a literature review is to find literature on a topic and do a careful evaluation of it. It is important to use the most recent information available. The literature review should provide a context for the research such as for a dissertation. It should show how the research supports the thesis of a research project. A literature review surveys scholarly journal articles, books, dissertations, and relevant websites. The literature review should have a conclusion presenting an argument about the importance of the literature review. Buy Essay Buy Custom Essay Essay Services Writing Service ... Custom Essay Help

Literature Reviews
Literature reviews provide an invaluable service for academia because they perform the function of the peer review , in which one expert in the field analyzes the work of another expert and evaluates the validity and reputability of that work. This function allows people who know less about the field to feel comfortable trusting or ignoring major works of literature based on the reviewer's educated, disinterested opinion. Students who write literature reviews , then, assume the role of the peer reviewer. In order to write a good literature review , one should try to learn as much as possible about the work, its subject area, and the ideological persuasions of the author (if they are important within the work). One should identify all doubtful areas within the work but should not immediately assume that they are flaws; rather, he or she should conduct enough research to determine whether or not those areas of doubt actually are flaws. One should also carefully withhold praise until the work of literature clearly warrants it; one who writes a good literature review does not praise the work's author simply because the ideas sound good but rather investigates the strength of the argument and, using the best critical thinking skills, offers praise or disapproval in as evidence-based a way as possible.

Hydroxycitrate as a Weight-Loss Ingredient
By Thomas J. Wheeler, PhD
Hydroxycitrate [(-)hydroxycitric acid, HCA], is a popular component of over-the-counter weight-loss formulations, where it is marketed under the names Citrin (Sabinsa Corp.) and CitriMax (InterHealth Co.) and appears in products such as the No-Diet Diet , Bio-Max 3000, PhytriMax, Lite Bites , Garcinia Trim-Plus, Garcinia-Max Diet System, Citrilite, Citrichrome, Lipotrol, MicroSlim, Body Busters, and Super Prolean Mega Fat Burner. Hydroxycitrate is found in high concentrations in Garcinia cambogia (a plant from India), as well as two other plants of the genus Garcinia, and these plants are used for commercial preparations of the compound. Other names applied to these plants include "brindall berry" and "Malabar Tamarind" (though strictly the latter refers to a much different species). The reputed effects of hydroxycitrate are based on its action as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme ATP citrate lyase (also known as citrate cleavage enzyme), which is required for the synthesis of fatty acids. The enzyme takes citrate, which has been exported from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm, and forms acetyl CoA and oxaloacetate from it. Coincidentally, this inhibitory effect was discovered in the laboratory of my Ph.D. mentor, Dr. John M. Lowenstein of Brandeis University [1]. (Although my own research project did not involve hydroxycitrate, I can remember it being used in other ongoing studies in the Lowenstein laboratory while I was there in the 1970's.) Lowenstein has followed recent developments in the use of his discovery with great interest, and has shared his observations with me; some of his conclusions are presented in this article.
