Citizen Hughes

By Michael Drosnin
Driven by phobias, disfunctional genius manipulates the world about him
Maniacal billionaire Howard Hughes interacted with the world through messages handwritten on legal size paper or over the phone from his penthouse atop the Desert Hills Hotel in Las Vegas during the sixties. From his isolated reclusive perch that he never left in all those years, he manipulated politics, the fate of his financial empire and the lives of great and small men.

Crime and Punishment

By Fyodor Dostoevsky
The mind of a criminal reveals much about ourselves In “Crime and Punishment” we follow Dostoevsky’s complex and conflicted main character Raskolnikov, concurrently capable of heinous savagery and compulsive kindness, from the depth of self destruction to the heights of spiritual redemption. [In History] The Words of Bernfrieda by Gabriella Brooke When an author provides both maps and a genealogical table, the reader senses a reading experience of family intrigue and fascinating locale, which is the case in Gabriella Brooke’s first novel, The Words of Bernfrieda, (EWU Press) a family saga of Eleventh Century France and Italy. Featuring the House of Tancred of Hauteville, the story is told through the voice of Bernfrieda, bastard daughter of Mauger and older half-sister and lady-in-waiting to The Lady Fredesenda, who is given as bride to Tancred of Hauteville on the windswept coast of Normandy.

Writing Literature Reviews
compiled by Writing Center Staff This page will walk you through the most important steps involved in writing a literature survey, an common assignment in graduate courses across the disciplines. Please note that a literature review is not the same thing as a book review. See our handout on Writing Book Reviews for more information.
Introduction Surveying the literature is necessary because scholarship is cumulative no matter what you write, you are standing on someone else's shoulders. Scholars must say something new while connecting what they say to what has already been said. Read on for more hints on how to approach a literature review, or follow the link to read a sample literature review written for Professor Jean Schroedel's Politics and Policy 300 course. Review Articles A review article or review of the literature article considers the state and progress of current literature on a given topic or problem by organizing, integrating, and evaluating previously published books and articles. In short, a review article is a critical evaluation of material that has already been published. The APA Publication Manual (1994) explains that a review article: defines and clarifies the topic or problem;

Mon Literature Reviews Literature reviews are always included in dissertations and other types of research papers . In essence, literature reviews are surveys and discussions of existing literature, i.e. published research papers and dissertations that cover the same subject matter as the students' own dissertation topics. Before describing their own research in their dissertations, students write literature reviews to provide a context and give an overview of the major trends in research in their fields. Literature reviews are the primary vehicle for this component of the dissertation writing process. To prepare for writing literature reviews, students first gather copies of those dissertations, journal articles, and other research papers focused on the same topic as that of their own dissertation topics. Searching for relevant literature will begin with a review of research papers read as

WHAT'S NEW
On Deep History and the Brain
Daniel Lord Smail
Deep (a.k.a. Long or Big) History steps way back to take all of human development into consideration. In quest of a seamless narrative connecting such a large span of time, Daniel Lord Smail proposes making the brain the focus of the story. After a fascinating tour of historiography in relation to the "time revolution" of the 1860s (when the metaphorical bottom dropped out of our sense of the past), Smail provides an example of how his "new neurohistory" might work by looking at the biological and cultural evolution of various psychotropic mechanisms. Just a sketch, but it does put some interesting ideas in play. Previously November 8: added my review of Douglas Coupland's Marshall McLuhan November 1: added my review of A. J. Somerset's

Literature reviews
I had to write a literature review for this course. To get started, I found some notes of things to look for when reviewing literature. One book by R. Murray Thomas said to look in the following stages:
  • topic statement define key terms rationale - what the topic contributes to the field and why it's important methods and instruments of data collection ways of classifying and analyzing data ways of interpreting data ways of reporting data
The problem I had with those tips were that they only really make sense if the literature review is in the context of a whole research project. If you're just doing a literature review, a different book by Donna M. Mertens had some more focused advice in a 9 step format:
  • identify research topic review secondary sources to get an overview - some journals like to publish literature reviews, which could be used as as starting point. When reading journal titles, focus on ones with "review" or "bulletin" in the name such as Review of Educational Research develop a search strategy conduct search obtain titles read and prepare bibliographic information and notes evaluate the research reports analyze the research findings and synthesize the results use the literature review
  • Mertens also suggested asking the following questions:
    • What are any of the biases, if any, in the literature?

At RTI-HS we frequently assist our clients with literature reviews. In some cases the literature review is a task that is part of a larger project, such as developing a model. In other cases the project is a stand-alone project. Whatever the situation, we follow a well-defined process that includes definition of the search criteria, literature search, extracting and synthesis of the data, and report development. Depending on the project scope, our project team may just include staff from our health economics group , or may include expert staff from our other groups including epidemiology patient-reported outcomes biometrics , and market assessment . When you work with RTI-HS you gain the benefit of collaborating with a team that in many cases is already familiar with the literature and can conduct your literature review effectively and efficiently.

Paraparaumu A book can do that, though. The right book (or the wrong book?) can transport you from Paraparaumu to Paris, or from Paris to Paraparaumu. It can transform you into another person. At the very least, even the most ordinary book can change the morning you have ahead of you. So why am I choosing Young Adult books these days? Believe me, its not that I want to be twelve again. by Elizabeth Bachner
    An Interview with Jay Kirk
"Theres definitely something exploitative about writing nonfiction, where you take your subjects out of the chaotic wilderness of real life and then rearrange their corpses. Its fun work, but sometimes you feel like youre engaging in something that ought to be illegal." by JC Hallman
    An Interview with Audrey Niffenegger
"Sadly, I dont think anything is eternal. If you want something to stick around you have to use it. And even then, things change as we use them. I try to get the new and the old to co-exist in my life. So, for example, I am a letterpress printer who sometimes sets metal type by hand and sometimes sets on the computer and prints the result on the letterpress from photo-polymer plates. Fifteenth-century technology goes hand-in-hand with 21st-century technology." by Terry Hong
    An Interview with Ben Greenman
"All the qualities that we grapple with ego, doubt, appetite are flattened out in celebrities, so that they become thinner but more widespread. They live larger. They cover a larger area. But we use them to work through our own insecurities, which is why I thought they were good subjects for literature."
