CULTURE In spite of such modern influences as television and radio, Lithuanian folklore continues to hand down a rich and original heritage from generation to generation. Lithuanian songs and a remarkable collection of fairy tales, legends, proverbs, and aphorisms have their roots deep in a language and culture that are among the oldest in Europe. Lithuanian folk art is mainly embodied in ceramics, leatherwork, wood carving, and textiles; its colouring (which tends to avoid gaudiness) and its original geometric or floral patterns are characteristic features. The Vilnius drawing school, founded in 1866, has had a strong influence on the nation's fine-arts traditions, and the composer and painter Mikalojus Ciurlionis (d. 1911) also had a considerable influence on contemporary forms. During the Soviet period, a realistic note was introduced into sculpture and painting, and Lithuanian drawing, noted for the use of natural colour and a highly refined technique, has won international acclaim. Architecture has been affected by a rich heritage in monuments and old buildings and by styles, ranging from the Gothic to the Neoclassical, that have acquired a distinctive local character.

About Lithuania
Our other sites www.litfood.lt CUL TU RE There exists a sound reason for saying that culture is the mainstay of the survival of Lithuania. The state, powerful during the Middle Ages and later weakened, was reborn with the same name in the 20th century, solely thanks to the fact that its main ethnic group, the Lithuanians, had managed to preserve their national identity, in other words their culture, language, literature, art and traditions. From this identity sprouted all the new forms of creativity, having assimilated the modernism of the 20th century and current post-modernism. The national culture and higher forms of art created on the foundation it provided, expanded and were consolidated during the interval between the two world wars. During the years of Soviet occupation, culture became a shelter of spiritual resistance. Culture assisted Lithuanians in protecting their identity. Ethnic culture was maintained and professional artistic culture was created cleverly and selflessly and often through the use of Soviet institutions. The new rebirth which commenced in 1988 was capable of delivering victory also because all of the creative forces of the nation had merged.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman For the last hundred years, much of Lithuania's culture has been in hiding. Different countries occupied Lithuania during that time. They tried to change some or all of the traditions and culture of Lithuania. But Lithuanians did not give up their culture. Today, Lithuanians enjoy the freedom to practice their own unique ways.
Part of Lithuanian culture's survival can be found in any average Lithuanian. Lithuanians are thought of as very kind and outgoing people. Generally, Lithuanians place more importance on emotion than on thought. To their neighbors, this sometimes makes Lithuanians seem too carefree. Partly because emotion is so important, Lithuanians have fought hard for the right to express themselves.
In the middle of the 20th century, the Soviet Union took control of Lithuania. They outlawed Lithuanian language, schools, and churches. The Soviet Union made it illegal to buy or sell books in the Lithuanian language. But some native Lithuanians lived outside the country. They printed books and magazines in Lithuanian and brought them to Lithuania.

Lithuania : Culture
Like Latvian and Old Prussian, the Lithuanian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The size of the territory in which Lithuanian was spoken shrank considerably through the ages. Today it is roughly coterminous with the boundaries of Lithuania except for some areas of Lithuanian speakers in Poland and Belarus, and except for the diaspora living in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and even Siberia. The movie industry was accomplished in the late 1940s. Lithuanian filmmakers released four full-length films in 1989 and five in 1990; they also released twenty-eight short films, twenty-four newsreels, and four documentaries. Artistic photography has roots that are older than the Soviet regime in Lithuania.Sports are also a prevalent national pastime. Lithuania's most popular game is basketball, and a few Lithuanians play professionally in the United States and in European countries. Lithuania's individual athletes have won Olympic medals and routinely compete in European events. Akmenes Birzau Ignalina Jonavos ... AskBabyNames @ 2008 MapZones

Deal of the Month Influences by different traditions and factors are very much evident in Lithuania culture Versatility is the hallmark of the culture of Lithuania and it is generally ascribed to its multicultural legacy which extended beyond the ethnic Lithuanian boundaries. Many of the eminent personalities in the world putting up in neighboring territories were inspired by this expansive Lithuania culture. However, this country has managed to protect its traditional culture despite being influenced by different means. Emigrant artists, various occupations, political unions (forced or strategic one), and scientific exchange have been the biggest agents which gave a new shape and form to the Lithuania culture. Artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis helped flourish the Lithuanian art and in a great manner. Theatre, music and literature witnessed immense growth in the very first few years of independence of the country. Many of the emigrant writers and artists gave their best of works which became an asset to Lithuania. Most of the cultural heritages within the country are contributions from these artists from Western Europe and USA. Symphony, operas and theatrical performances have set many a milestones as the hallmark of

Lithuanian Culture
Culture was used to keep spirits up during the dark years, and is nowadays used to show that independence is back The greatest events in Lithuanian cultural life are the song festivals, occurring every fourth year in Vilnius. In the beginning it was only a Song Day , but later it was extended with an Ensemble- and Folk Music Day and a Dance Day . The song-day is still the most prominent, and is also the finishing night. The setting in Vingis Park is magnificent, sporting some 30,000 singers and several orchestras under the enormous curved roof, and an audience of at least 10,000. Vilnius is inundated by singers, dancers and musicians from all over the country, as well as Lithuanian emigrants from the whole world. The tour buses are in triple rows around the city centre. The Japanese swarm around. The zoom lenses are almost worn out. The beer price rises. Everyone charges up for a great cultural event. You might say that the Song Festival showed the way, and then Lithuania exploded with all sorts of music festivals. Who needs the Roskilde Festival when Lithuania has Visaginas’ Country Festival

Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture

Chicago, IL 60629
The life-long dream of Stanley Balzekas, Jr., to preserve for posterity the wealth of material pertaining to Lithuania's history and culture, was realized when he opened the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in a "two-flat" building next to his auto dealership on Archer Avenue in Chicago on June 22, 1966. His personal collection of art, armor and rare maps was donated and placed on display. Still the president of the museum's board of directors, Stanley Balzekas has seen his museum grow to a major repository of publications, cultural artifacts, and arts not only of Lithuania, but also of the Lithuanian immigrants to the United States and the generations that followed them. The Museum quickly outgrew the available space on Archer Avenue and moved to its present location on Pulaski Road in 1986.
Departments include the Museum's main exhibit "Lithuania Through the Ages", which portrays the development of Lithuanian history and culture from prehistory to the present; fine artwork by Lithuanian and Lithuanian-American artists; a collection of more than 200 antiquariun (16th to 19th centuries) and 700 modern maps of Lithuania and Eastern Europe and atlases; the Numismatic Collection of Lithuanian coins, currencies, tokens, medals, military orders and decorations in the United States; the Children's Museum of Immigrant History; and much more.
