Williamsburg, Virginia ranks fourth on Byways magazine's list of top motorcoach destinations for 2008. The main reason for this high ranking is Colonial Williamsburg, the city's world-famous living history museum. People from around the world visit Williamsburg to immerse themselves in American colonial history.
    Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia
Colonial Williamsburg is probably the best-known living history museum in North America. In colonial days, Williamsburg served as Virginia's capital. Today, costumed interpreters play the roles of George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other colonial notables. You can tour meticulously-restored buildings and immaculate gardens, or participate in theater and dance performances. Stairways and some entrances to buildings in Colonial Williamsburg may present challenges for wheelchair users. Most wheelchair users are able to navigate outdoor walkways, streets and garden paths. Colonial Williamsburg rents folding wheelchairs and offers publications to assist hearing- and vision-impaired visitors.

    The Pharaonic Village - Introduction
The Pharaonic Village: A Living Museum
Introduction Take a step back in time; about three thousand years back, to be exact. Just a few miles from the center of Cairo is a time machine waiting to take you on a fantastic journey to the days of the Pharaohs, a time brought to life by an incredible group of actors and actresses, faithful and exact reproductions of buildings, clothing, and lifestyles; and of course, the redoubtable Dr. Hassan Ragab and his son Dr. Abdelsalam Ragab. They have worked for over twenty years to create the most precise living recreation of the golden days of Pharaonic Egypt, and now he invites you to join him on this fascinating journey to the past.

Pink slips for porcupines? U.S. zoos face cuts
As states slash funding, the shortfalls hit 'living museums' especially hard

The Associated Press updated 1/13/2009 10:14:53 AM ET Even porcupines could get pink slips in the slumping economy as states consider cutting or eliminating funding that supports zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens. As part of his plan to help New York address a potential $15.4 billion budget shortfall, Gov. David Paterson has called for cutting funding for the Zoo, Botanical Garden and Aquarium Program from $9 million to $4 million in the state's 2009 budget and for eliminating funding in 2010. "We can't fire our bears or furlough our sea lions," said John Calvelli, executive vice president of public affairs for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates the Central Park and Bronx zoos and the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, among others.

New York’s living museums facing cuts
Zoos, botanic gardens, and other hot spots dealing with funding decline
    Below:
  • ad info By Jenn Bain Travel + Leisure updated 12/2/2008 12:24:39 PM ET Five-year-old Zivi-Jean Ham and her 18-month-old brother, Jackson, love the Bronx Zoo. Along with their parents, Melissa Munn and Selby Ham, they’ve visited six times already this year, taking the subway from their Upper East Side home in Manhattan. Giraffes, tigers, sea lions, story hour, and a carousel add up to a full day of activities. “It’s an amusement park, school, and field trip all rolled into one,” says Melissa. But zoos and other “living museums” in New York State are feeling the pinch of budget cuts. They receive much of their funding through organizations like the Coalition of Living Museums (CLM), which provides support to 112 state organizations, including the Bronx Zoo, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Buffalo Museum of Science. And the coalition, along with New York State’s Zoos, Botanical Gardens and Aquaria Program (ZBGA), is facing a potential 55 percent cut in its budget in the 2008/2009 fiscal year—from $9 million to $4 million. A decision from the New York State Assembly is due in January 2009.
