Lizard Pictures
If you are walking in the desert and spot a small lizard with a curled tail running past you, chances are it is a Zebra-tailed lizard (Callisaurus draconoides). Zebra-tails get their name from the black and white stipes on the tail. It serves as a built-in self-defense mechanism. Predators that key in on the visibly curved tail do not fatally harm the lizard. While they are fast, they are also curious. One might run past you on a trail and pause, as if awaiting for you to approach again. By walking slow and steady, you can often approach them at close range for a picture. A close-up picture shows the tail to be both flat and striped. Zebra-tailed lizards are active during the day and feed primarily on insects.

The Frilled Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) is a native Australian species known for the extra layer of skin around the neck. They are the only species in the Chlamydosaurus genus, which is also a part of the larger old world lizard family, Agamidae. The neck collar is considered a defense mechanism. When startled or under potential attack, the Frilled Lizard raises the collar around the entire neck, giving it the appearance of being a larger, and hypothethically more dangerous, opponent. In fact, Frilled Lizards already measure on the larger side for lizards, with many stretching over two feet in length. Frilled Lizards tend to be aboreal, spending the majority of their time in trees. Their large size makes them an easy to spot prey on the ground while they are searching for food. Also when startled, the Frilled Lizard will rear up on its back to feet and run for the nearest tree.

Frilled Lizard Frilled lizards live in forests in Australia's hot north. They are covered with scales. They eat insects and spiders. They have a neck frill they open when they need to look fierce. Frilled lizards are also called frill-neck lizards or frilled dragons . They belong to the family of lizards called 'dragons'. Like other reptiles, the Frilled Lizard is active during the day, relying on the sun to warm its body. Habitat
Frilled Lizards live in dry forests and woodland, in the northern and north-western parts of Australia. They are often found in trees, moving easily between branches. Appearance
A frilled lizard can be up to 95 centimetres long. Its colour matches the colour of the land and the trees it lives on. This is called camouflage. Male frilled lizards are more brightly coloured than females. Behaviour
Frilled Lizards generally live alone, and are territorial. To escape an enemy, a frilled lizard can move very fast on its two hind legs. When it is frightened, the frilled lizard opens its mouth wide which causes it to ruffle out its red and orange, scaly frill. The frill like an open umbrella. The lizard hisses loudly too and may thrash its tail on the ground. Frilled lizards will bite an enemy with its strong teeth if it is forced to fight. Frilled lizards are not poisonous or harmful to people.

Reptiles: Iberian Rock Lizard
Status: Iberolacerta cyreni is endemic to the central mountain system of Spain, where it is a reasonably common species in several areas. However, its populations are highly fragmented and are threatened by habitat loss, especially due to the construction of ski resorts and roads. It might also be adversely affected in future by climate change. Currently listed as Endangered.

  • So many creatures in the world that we as a society are threatening with our way of life. I dream of a future where we take into consideration the habitats of animals before we build, expand, or decide where to have another ski resort. Texas horned lizard
This is an information sheet about the Texas horned lizard . It's not a care sheet because this desert horned lizard is on the endangered species list. Nonetheless the horny toad (as it's sometimes known) is a fascinating lizard to be observed in the wild. It's unfortunate that this horned lizard is on the endangered species list, as well as being extremely difficult to take care of, for it has one of the nicest dispositions of any lizard out there. They're incredibly friendly, not causing a fuss when picked up -even in the wild. They're probably a little too tame which could begin to explain why their numbers have gone dramatically down. In the sixties the Texas horned lizard was an extremely popular pet, being sold to tourists in a lot more stores than just pet stores. When out of their natural habitat, and with little regard as to how to care for them, the horny toad began dying in rapid numbers. This desert horned lizard needed the proper conditions (as all creatures do) to be able to survive; one of which was a diet consisting largely of harvester ants. It didn't help that pesticides were contributing to the demise of harvester ants in the wild, making it difficult for an uncaptured Texas horned lizard to thrive.

    Texas Horned Lizard
Texas designated the Texas horned lizard ( Phrynosoma cornutum ), the official state reptile in 1993. Horned lizards can have an intimidating appearance but are docile and gentle in nature. When a horned lizard feels threatened, it flattens and freezes in place, trying to blend with the ground. Texas now lists this unique animal as threatened

permitted with attribution / no derivative works Ancient American Indians of the Southwest (the Anasazi and the Mimbres) depicted horned lizards on pottery and in petroglyphs. It was a symbol of health and happiness to Native Americans. In recent times, the horned lizards' habitat has shrunk, imported fire ants have supplanted their food supply, and their numbers have declined drastically. The horned lizard is no longer seen in many regions where it was once common. Two of the three native Texas species are now listed as threatened (Texas horned lizard and the mountain short-horned lizard). Source: Horned Lizard by Jane Manaster, Texas Tech U Press
