Help in catching geckos Hi,
I was down in Florida recently and tried to catch a gecko, which I was going to keep for a day, to show some kids and then I would release it. But catching it was quite a trick. Any ideas from clever gecko hunters out there who would share their successful techniques would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

I lived in Florida for a few months and it didnt take much to get them geckos into your home, or anoles for that matter, or them little frogs as well. But when they would get into my home I would use a styrofoam cup or deli dish, scoop them up and let them outside. Good luck Steven...a petshop may be an easier feat. PE Sorry, No Replies

Monitor Lizards
Nile Monitor Lizards SWAHILI NAME: Kenge
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Monitors belong to the family Varanidae . Some are small reptiles of less than a foot in length, while the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard, grows to 364 lb. All monitors are tropical reptiles. They are active lizards, that may be very hostile, lashing out with their tails upon the slightest provocation. Even a small monitor can produce a stinging lash with its tail. The claws of monitors are long and sharp. The jaws are very strong. Once they bite something it is very difficult to get them to let go. Monitors are carnivorous and will devour anything they are capable of dismembering and gulping down. Species which live in or near water will readily eat fish. Monitors do not divest themselves of their tails, like some other lizards. Once lost, the tail of a monitor does not grow back. The Savanna monitor, Varanus exanthematicus

Hi,
Welcome! I’m pretty new to this sight myself, I can tell you I really enjoy all the great information being exchanged here on these forums. As far as what new reptile should you get? You should probably research, research, research to see what will work best for you, your time, income, housing space, etc. What ever you choose don’t be afraid to go to the forum that your reptile falls under and get the best information from the other members. I spend most of my time in the monitor forum, I’m raising Iguanas, Nile monitor, Water monitor and a Savannah monitor, I’ve been raising reptiles for over 30 years and I’m still learning a thing or two just from reading things people post on the forums. So, what ever reptile your interested in, you should probably go to that forum and ask members about that reptile before buying? best to you!

Message To: Herp In reference to Message Id: If you want somthing that can be handled, I suggest a plated lizard or armidillo lizard. There’s somthing I posted that I’ll bump for you. It’s about lizards that like to be handled. If you don’t want a lizard that enjoys being handled, Reasearch cool lizards, like uro’s or chuckwallas.

The Natural History of the Crocodile Monitor Lizard (Varanus salvadorii) and General Notes on the Family Varanidae Written by Frank Indiviglio
Despite - or perhaps because of - its immense size, impressive armament of teeth and nails and relative scarcity, the spectacular crocodile monitor lizard is becoming increasingly popular in large private collections.
I became acquainted with these formidable giants when they were first imported into the USA, and have cared for several in the collections of the Bronx and Staten Island Zoos.  Their captive care is now well-understood, but, as they dwell in a habitat that is not conductive to field research, much less is known about their lives in the wild.  Today I would like to summarize what we do know, and take a look at where they fit into the family Varanidae (the monitors) as well.
Range and Habitat
Crocodile monitors are limited in distribution to southern New Guinea.  They are highly arboreal, and have thus far been observed only in the canopies of lowland forests near mangrove swamps and rivers.

9. The Lizard Peninsula
Lizard Peninsula Tourism Association. Guide to region and accommodation.
http://www.lizard-peninsula.co.uk/
The Lizard Peninsula is unique. Stunningly beautiful at any time of the year, there is nowhere quite like it anywhere else in Britain. It is for this reason that the Lizard has been a continuing source of inspiration for artists and writers. Almost surrounded by the sea, the peninsula stands alone, in a very real sense, from the rest of the county. In a line from London to Land’s End, the backbone of Cornwall is a route to somewhere. The Lizard. Not a cross-roads, a junction, or a place to drive through, but a journey’s end, a destination. Standing proud in the sea, the peninsula presents a rugged face to the elements, yet paradoxically the climate is probably the warmest in Britain. The air is crisp, clear and unpolluted by industry. The rocks and cliffs of the coastline offer shelter to the tiny fishing villages huddled into their coves, looking now much as they did centuries ago. Small cottages, thatched and whitewashed, cluster around tiny harbours. Colourful fishing boats, pulled up on the beach, bear testimony to the fact that these small communities still depend largely on the sea for their livelihood. Winter is a quiet time here. The fishermen’s choirs sing in their local pubs, and the harbours are decorated with lights and lanterns for Christmas. It is an ancient place, where history is indelibly inscribed on the landscape. For these reasons, the Lizard Peninsula has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is recognised as being of international botanical importance - and here you can find 15 of Britain’s rarest plants! The warm local climate has led to the abundant growth of sub-tropical vegetation, and a constant profusion of colour all year round.

This site was originally conceived in July 2002 with the aim of sharing our passion for reptiles online through photographs of our collection.
Since then it has grown considerably to provide one of the largest 'original' reptile photo galleries online whilst also providing care guides written through our own experiences, some of which have become the main source of vital care information for certain species.
Paul Ritchie has been keeping lizards for over 25 years and successfully breeding for over 15 years. He and has built up an extensive, but by no means comprehensive, knowledge through first hand resources and his own experience of keeping these fascinating animals in captivity.
He has also spent 3 years on the moderating team of the UK's most popular reptile forum (see below) and has contributed to the Dutch magazine Lacerta, the US based Reptiles Magazine and the UK based Reptile Care magazine.

Plated Lizards of the Genus Gerrhosaurus : An Alternative to Iguanas
    David T. Kirkpatrick, Ph.D
NOTE: I am currently revising and updating this FAQ to include other species of Gerrhosaurus and also the related Madagascan plated lizards, in the genus Zonosaurus . If you have experience with these lizards, I wouldn't mind hearing from you.... The variety of lizard species kept in captivity can be overwhelming, especially if you are new to lizard-keeping. The most common lizards kept are probably the ubiquitous green iguana and the equally well-known leopard gecko. Volumes have been written on their care and maintenance in captivity, and I will not attempt to summarize or add to that literature here. Suffice it to say that if you want to keep a lizard and have never kept one before, then you should give serious thought to purchasing a locally-bred leopard gecko. If you have some experience with lizards and wish to have a large and impressive display animal to impress your friends, then I highly recommend that you devote the four or five years necessary to rear a green iguana. For sheer "lizardness" an five foot long adult green iguana is hard to beat! However, if you are somewhat experienced with lizards and you want a reasonably sized animal, of calm temperment and only moderate care requirements, one group to consider is the Plated lizards in the genus

We are planning a new method of keeping our Shinisaurus based along the more naturalistic vivaria often seen on the continent. We intend to heavily plant them with real plants and mosses with larger water areas and slow moving water falls. Our findings will be published in the future.
Some early observations References Most of the information I could find was taken from the internet, and thus references can not be listed in the traditional way. Here is a list of pages that I found useful for keeping this species and where I also dragged information from for this article. http://www.agamainternational.com/pages/shinisaurus.html
