Alligator Lizard
Elgaria and Gerrhonotus The 67 species of alligator lizards range throughout the world. The ones common to North America, Elgaria and Gerrhonotus , includes 8 species ranging from southern Canada down through Central America. Members of the family Anguidae (and thus related to the Old and New World legless lizards), they look similar to the Gerrhosaurus , the plated lizards in the family Cordylidae, native to southern and eastern Africa. The different species range through a variety of habitats, generally frequenting moist areas of foothills and mountains, but also found ranging down into the drier grasslands, staying near rivers and streams. Secretive in nature, they hide under windfall, undergrowth, and in rocky crevices. Pugnacious when caught, they will thrash around, often delivering a painful bite. Alligator lizards sport a flat, wedge-shaped head. There is little neck definition, with the body about the same width as the head. The legs are small, thin, and end in five fine toes. Notable is a distinct lateral fold running along their lower sides from the corner of their mouth to their tail. Their scales are large, slightly keeled, and shingled. Ground color is pale to medium brown with darker crossbands. They shed in one piece, like a snake.

California alligator lizards Three alligator lizards inhabit California, and two of them are widespread: Southern Alligator Lizard Elgaria multicarinata above ; photo taken in Monterey Co.) and Northern Alligator Lizard E. coerulea right ; from Del Norte Co.). There are 8 species of alligator lizards in this genus in a family of about 100 lizards, mostly New World denizens but of Asiatic distribution as well (Stebbins 2003) Despite the names, the California ranges of Southern and Northern Alligator Lizards overlap broadly in northern California in both the coast ranges and the Sierran foothills, but only the Southern occurs south of Monterey Co. and south of the Sierra in southern California. The Southern Alligator Lizard generally prefers drier habitats but both are usually found near water. In addition, the Panamint Alligator Lizard E. panamintina occurs in the Panamint, White, and Inyo Mts. of s. Mono and Inyo counties. Alligator lizards can give a nasty bit when caught, so I don't try to catch them. Yet all the older literature (e.g., Stebbins 1966, Brown 1974) emphasize the importance of looking at the pattern on the underside of the lizard: Northern has dark longitudinal lines between the scales whilst Southern has lines or dashes down the center of the scales. One is also told to count the number of scales in certain rows. I find these point exceptionally frustrating since I'm never looking at the bottom of the lizard! Even the new literature (Stebbins 2003) puts emphasis of these points. Perhaps this is because many herpetologists are looking at specimens in which eye color cannot be determined. More recent literature (Basey 1976, Stebbins 1985, 2003) do point out that eye color much more readily separates

Registered Charity No. 1092934 Lizard Peninsula Heritage Trust Homepage Homepage Membership Management Programmes Newsletters ... Photographs Our Origins
Since our origins in 1997 as Friends of the Lizard, the Lizard Peninsula Heritage Trust (the Lizard Trust) has become a fast growing organisation, with an increasing membership among both residents and visitors. We are evolving a wider interest in all matters that contribute to the natural, historic and man-made environments of the Lizard Peninsula, with the twin aims of seeking their protection and enhancement , while promoting their understanding and enjoyment.
We changed our name in 2005 to reflect our terms of reference more accurately. What is our area of concern?
We define our area of concern as the rural parishes of Constantine, Cury, Grade Ruan, Gunwalloe, Gweek, Landewednack, Manaccan, Mawgan-in-Meneage, Mullion, St Anthony-in-Meneage, St Keverne and St Martin-in-Meneage. In this way we include the parishes that affect the setting of the Lizard as well as those on the Peninsula itself.

LIZARD DIVER is no more..... I'm sorry to have to announce that Rob was involved in a tragic diving incident on sunday the fourth of march, which claimed is life. While diving in Camel Quarry near Wadebridge at about 1 pm Rob surfaced from around 90m at far too fast a rate. This resulted in an extreme case of the bends from which he had little chance of surviving. He was taken by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth where he was pronounced dead. At the moment it is not known what caused him to surface so quickly, but there is to be an inquest into the incident. The day in question had atrocious weather, Rob being the first of four people whoose lifes were claimed by the waterways of Cornwall and Devon in the space of less than 5 hours.

The Lizard Leaf Company Ltd
Your local specialty babyleaf salad growers in Cornwall. LOCAL
We have been producing baby salad leaves since 2003. Our business was originally based at St.Martin on the Lizard Peninsular - hence our name Lizard Leaves. We have recently moved to Mylor Downs, near Penryn. FLAVOUR The great flavour of our babyleaf salad leaves comes from growing varieties which we have selected for their great flavour rather than for their abilities to perform in areas such as yield or uniformity. FRESHNESS All our leaves are refrigerated on site to between 3-5 degrees centigrade immediately after cutting and where possible we aim to harvest and deliver on the same day so our produce is always really fresh. All our salad leaves are supplied unwashed to preserve maximum freshness and natural keeping qualities. SPECIALIST
Babyleaf salad production is our speciality and we are a small family run enterprise that can offer a friendly, personalised and accurate service to all our customers throughout the season
FOOD MILES
All our salad leaves are grown in Cornwall and we supply our local Cornish fruit and vegetable wholesalers who sell and distribute our products for us. This reduces food miles to a minimum.

http://thelizardlifeboat.co.uk/
The new Tamar-class lifeboat will be able to reach casualties much more quickly than our present Tyne-class boat, and give our volunteer crew even greater safety during their “shouts”. This will mean that The Lizard Lifeboat has the very latest and best in technology and facilities in a boathouse to match its
magnificent surroundings. The Lizard Lifeboat is to have a new Tamar-class lifeboat to replace our 22 year-old Tyne-class boat in late 2011, and our current 50-year-old boathouse at Kilcobben Cove is being demolished to accommodate the new boat. Lifeboats of the RNLI have been saving lives at The Lizard for 151 years and now, in 2010, our lifeboat station is celebrating that milestone with its most exciting leap forward
for decades. Patron of The Lizard Tamar Lifeboat Appeal
Author of "Custom of the County" Find out more... The exposed coasts around The Lizard and the brave 150-year history of the local lifeboat make ours one of Britain’s best-known and most cherished RNLI stations, and already we have had heart-warming responses to the news of a new boat, both within our local community and further afield. They have come from such varied sources as local places of worship, London Marathon runners, community organisations and many, many individuals.

Collared Lizards
Crotaphytus collaris Range
North America. Size
20-30 cm (8-12" [14" according to Wynne 1981]). Miscellaneous
Known in some areas as the "mountain boomer" because it was mistakenly though to emit a sound that echoed through the mountain valleys, it is the state lizard of Oklahoma. Collareds are noted for their upright running on their hind legs, giving them the appearance of miniature T. rex's (though this may rarely be seen in captivity as their enclosures do not provide enough room for such runs). They also have an interesting way of waving their tail, much like a cat, before grabbing at prey. They are capable of hard bites, but generally tame quickly. Collareds are relatively long-lived lizards. Description
The prominent black bands behind the head give it is common and scientific names; body green and head may be bright yellow. Male has brightly colored throat (blue, green or even orange) and may have blue patches on his belly, with generous sprinklings of white, yellow or red. Females are generally fawn or gray, taking on red or salmon-colored speckling during breeding season. Enclosure
Collareds require very large, very hot enclosures. A strong temperature gradient is essential for this rocky desert species, with a place for hot basking and a place for cooling off. You should provide higher basking areas, thus creating a vertical and horizontal gradient. Daytime 75-90, Basking 95-104; Nighttime 70-85.
