WHO IS A FAQIH: WHAT IS TAQLID: Taqlid literally means `to follow and to imitate'. In Islamic legal terminology it means to follow a mujtahid or faqih in religious laws and commandments. In our everyday life we follow and imitate others in many things. We like to feel that we are taking the advice of experts in matters outside our own knowledge. Someone who wishes to build a house explains the basic idea of what he wants to his builder and then submits to his advice as to how he should go about the actual

I don't think there has been a proven answer yet, so we'll see what the ESP General Discussion forum can make of the query.
Does the number .99999999...(repeating) = 1
The logic behind this question says that since .999... goes on forever, and gets progressively closer to one, there is nothing in between .999... and 1. So obviously, it must = 1.
What do you think? No need for math knowledge, it's really just musing.
go. Corrigan 05-14-2008, 05:23 PM Yes. 0.9 repeating = 1. JohnDoherty 05-14-2008, 05:24 PM So is this an opinion, or do you have any proof..? Rex Rocker 05-14-2008, 05:24 PM I don't really think it equals one BUT the difference is so minimal it's... um... irrelevant

Explanations and Nonarguments
Abstract
: Several kinds of nonargumentative discourse are characterized, illustrated, and distinguished from argumentative discourse.
I. We said last period that every argument in logic has a structure every argument in logic can be described in terms of this structure. A. Premisses : statements which give evidence for, or reasons for, accepting the conclusion. B. Conclusion : statement which is purported to be established or affirmed on the basis of other statements (the premisses). II. Recognizing Arguments : Given these characterizations, then, how do we sort out arguments from the rest of the kinds of linguistic behavior? In effect, what we are doing is separating the territory of logic from the rest of the world. In order to know to what we can apply our powerful methods of analysis, we need to learn how to separate argumentative discourse from non-argumentative discourse. A. Typical argumentative "look-a-likes" fall into four main categories.

Non-Classical Logics
Final Project
Spring, 2009
This page contains information on the final project. This will most likely be a paper, but there are a variety of different approaches you could take to the paper.
Format:
10-15 pages typed double-spaced (ten- or twelve-point font, one-inch margins, no really weird fonts, and preferably also not space-eating fonts like Courier New). The paper should strive for the following virtues: clarity at every level (sentence, paragraph, section, paper as a whole); argumentative rigor. The paper must be on a topic closely related to our class, and should make use of class readings in addition to outside research.
Due:
Wednesday, April 22. Each student should also do an oral presentation on the topic of the paper prior to the due date.
Content:
Here are some possible general strategies with a few specific suggestions for each.
  • The paper could address a primarily philosophical issue about a nonclassical logic. What are the motivations for the logic? Are they adequate or not? More generally, you could address criticisms of the very idea of a "deviant" logic, as found in Quine and Susan Haack. More generally still, you could address the issue of whether logic should be thought of as a highly general empirical discipline, or whether it is entirely a priori. (See e.g. Putnam, "Is Logic Empirical?", which defends "quantum logic" as well as discussing the general issue.)

18. Workshop "Conditionals, Information, And Inference"
Conditionals have raised considerable scientific interest in different sciences, such as Artificial Intelligence, logics, philosophy, and the cognitive sciences.
http://www.fernuni-hagen.de/BWLOR/cii_ws04/workshop.html
Workshop
Ulm, Germany
September 21, 2004
co-located with
KI 2004
th German Conference on Artificial Intelligence
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION - AIMS AND SCOPE
Conditionals are fascinating and versatile objects of knowledge representation. On the one hand, they may express rules in a very general sense, representing e.g. plausible relationships, physical laws, and social norms. On the other hand, as default rules or general implications, they constitute a basic tool for reasoning, even in the presence of uncertainty. In this sense, conditionals are tightly related both to information and inference. Conditionals have raised considerable scientific interest in different sciences, such as Artificial Intelligence, logics, philosophy, and the cognitive sciences. The aim of this workshop is to attract researchers from all these areas, and to provide a forum for intense discussions of new results and open problems focussing on any aspect of conditionals, be they of theoretical or practical relevance, addressing specialized or interdisciplinary issues. As conditional reasoning touches the heart of many interesting and relevant areas in AI, papers on the following topics are welcome:
