Volunteers the Only Helpful Presence in Parts of Post-Katrina Louisiana
Many adults and high school and college students have traveled down to Louisiana for a week or more to help build homes for those displaced by the storm. Fifteen months after Hurricane Katrina devastated stretches of the Louisiana coastline, there is little evidence of governmental action. While residents give FEMA credit for removal of substantial amounts of debris, in terms of new housing in the area, most of it has been built by the residents themselves and volunteers from around the country. In response to a call for help put out by local churches, many adults and high school and college students from thirty-eight of the fifty states have traveled down to Louisiana for a week or more to help build homes for those displaced by the storm. Habitat for Humanity alone plans to build a hundred houses a year over the next three years in Slidell, Louisiana, a bedroom community north of New Orleans virtually annihilated by the storm.
But that’s just a fraction of the needs of Louisiana’s residents. It’s predicted that over 50,000 homes will eventually have to be demolished in the region; many of the businesses and institutions that once supplied jobs to the residents have yet to be reestablished; and restoration of the wetlands, a necessity, according to environmental experts, in order to offer protection against future storms, hasn’t begun. If the current situation is an accurate predictor of the future, much of what is still needed, in terms of housing, business restoration, and environmental restoration, may also have to be accomplished by volunteers.

A little bit about Louisiana101
is not a major scholarly website put together by a staff of technology junkies, but rather a working document. Cuurrently there are over 650 pages of information - 225 pages of lesson ideas, 50+ pages of reading materials, 400+ facts-of-the-day, and 300+ links to parish information. I am a middle school Louisiana history teacher with just simple ideas that 'might' help a new teacher. What I really need is for teachers to stop thinking that their lessons are not good enough. Many fellow teachers are looking for one "bright idea" to use in class. No one really needs a “full blown, GLE-encoded, state mandated lesson”. Most of us have those, we just need that one little worksheet or activity to round out our own lessons. So please take the time to send an email and attach that word document that you put together last week. Make it a habit. When you create something for your class, EMAIL it to me so that other teachers don't have to "re-invent the wheel". It's also a great place for you to store your work sheets for later use. Help us all help the kids. Lately I've been getting emails from teachers around the state sending me items they have used. Please send yours.
