The Certification and Recruitment Section implements and maintains teacher certification procedures as mandated by legislation and State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) policy as designated in Bulletin 746 Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel
This section issues initial and upgraded teaching certificates and also issues ancillary certificates for those who work in a non-teaching capacity in school settings (e.g., school nurses). Teaching in the U.S. - Teacher Certification for Foreign-Educated Teachers
Navigating through the rules, regulations and requirements for teacher certification can be a difficult and challenging process for teachers who received their training outside U.S. borders, but it could pay off, as a shortage of educators in key subjects and geographic locations has increased demand for qualified teachers in the United States. It is important to note that any non-U.S. citizen who wishes to teach in the United States must first obtain a visa from the U.S. embassy in their home country to be eligible to teach in the United States. In addition to visa requirements, foreign-educated teachers who would like to teach in U.S. public schools (Kindergarten through 12th grade levels) must also be certified by the state where they would like to work. While each state has its own individual certification requirements for foreign-educated teachers, there are certain requirements that most states have in common:

Teaching can be a very rewarding career. lecture hall image by GeoM from Fotolia.com Teaching requires more than talent and creativity. Teaching also requires a very important piece of paper, a legal document called certification. Certification legally permits a teacher to teach. Every state in the U.S. requires it and Louisiana is no exception. Louisiana teachers must complete a four year college or university degree in education from fully accredited institutions. Once a teacher is certified, the teacher is required to keep upgrading the certification until a Masters degree is attained. However, the teacher's education does not stop as Louisiana teachers holding Masters Degrees are required to earn continuing learning units in order to be renewed.

Teachers must have graduated from a state approved teacher education program, maintained a 2.5 GPA, have passed the Praxis exams for their area of certification and have the university recommend the teacher for Level 1 Professional certification. This type of certificate can be renewed once.

    Louisiana Teacher Certification:
    Recent Grads and Professionals
Louisiana teacher certification opens up careers in teaching for recent graduates and professionals. If you have a bachelor's degree, teaching experience, or relevant work experience, you may be eligible for an alternative pathway to a teaching license. In the practitioner program applicants actually work as teachers in the classroom while completing 21 to 30 credits of course work in education. This program is gruelling. Teaching full-time and taking college courses at the same time leaves no time or energy for life's other responsibilities. If you think you can handle the college course load and the stress of teaching real students every day, this is the most streamlined path to Louisiana teacher certification. Streamlined because it puts you in the classroom immediately as you work toward licensure. Another option is to return to college for your master's degree and teaching certificate This program may be best for those who have a bachelor's degree in a subject area other than education. A third alternative pathway awards a teaching license but no master's degree.

Gather the information you need to make a difference in your community. The Louisiana public educational system has been struggling to keep afloat. In the wake of hurricane Katrina, infrastructure in many government supported industries have been put to the test. Even without any effects from natural disasters, Louisiana's public education has allowed itself to crumble to the point where teachers have been compensated so poorly, they have been leaving the state to find better opportunities elsewhere. This is an issue that has recently been coming under more serious scrutiny. In 1998, Governor Mike Foster refused to accept his salary until teacher's recieved higher pay. In 2005, Governor Kathleen Blanco introduced a new reform bill. The state of our education system in Louisiana is not going unnoticed. Therefore, it is a matter of time before the right reform is introduced and higher education for teachers to understand and aid reforms will be mandatory.
Future Louisiana Teachers: There is a certain threshold that must be crossed before the public will understand when they are shooting themselves in the foot and begin to take action. This threshold has been crossed and Louisiana public education is certainly on the wave of reform. This is good news for those considering entering into the field of teaching in Louisiana. Reforms are being made to help further compensate those who are highly qualified in order to encourage the best educated teachers to stay in Louisiana. Teacher shortages are abundant in rural areas and loan forgiveness is now a common incentive for new teachers. Therefore, to best establish yourself as a desirable teacher candidate, learn about advanced degree programs from the top, accredited universities. Find out how to earn your
