Lovebirds are little clowns, playing for hours at a time. They love to hang from toys, spin them around, and dance on your shoulder. Watch out for your buttons! They love to pull them off your shirts! They love to snuggle and preen. Many people believe lovebirds must be kept in pairs. This is simply not true. A single lovebird makes a better pet because it bonds to you rather than to another lovebird. As far as the size of the lovebirds are concerned, the size of one bird varies distinctly from the other. The general size can range somewhere in between 13- 17cm in length. Their weight varies in between 40-60gm. Throughout the world, the lovebirds are considered to be the smallest birds in the family of the parrots. They have a stocky body structure and are specifically characterized by a blunt and short tail. However, their beak is quite sharp and large. The lovebirds that are little wild in nature have a green colored body. However, the upper part of their body can have different range of colors based upon the type of the species. The kind of voice apparatus that the lovebirds have, helps them in producing different sounds and voices. They are even capable of imitating human voice. Though they are not considered to be excellent talkers, yet their voice texture is quite amazing. There are even some lovebirds that are never capable of talking at all throughout their lives. The lovebirds have a lifespan ranging in between 10-15 years. As mentioned earlier, they have nice species, among which only eight of them are suitable as pets.

Lovebirds Lovebirds are meant to be, well you know what, loved and loved hard. In fact, it is very difficult to resist falling in love with them. This African parrot species is slowly becoming one of the most favorite pets in households today. It reached the United States in the late twentieth century. Since these birds love to coo and peck its loved one, it is generally believed a pair of Lovebirds is the best thing in a house. However, as a parrot expert, I must tell you it is not entirely true. If you are dedicated and really love this bird and are ready to spend time with your bird, one Lovebird is all that you need to own to enjoy your life. There are many varieties of Lovebirds, the most common being the Peachfaced Lovebird. A Lovebird is a source of pure joy and laughter. Whenever you are in a dark mood, watch your Lovebird's antics and you can see blues fading away into the distance! That's my guarantee to you. Lovebirds are playful by nature and it loves to follow you around on your shoulder. It plays hide-and-seek with you in your hair! Isn't that the cutest thing you have ever heard? A Lovebird is intelligent and affectionate. It can be trained to give kisses and learn other tricks. It has the ability to learn to talk and whistle. Its speech is clear and distinct. It responds eagerly to your voice and expects a loving gesture as a reward. Don't break its heart. Give it whenever it asks for it. And do not underestimate its abilities by its size. It is small in size but it is a big parrot by temperament.

Appearance
Generally speaking, lovebirds are short, stocky parrots with short tails. They have large heads and beaks. Their faces (sometimes the whole head) and neck are usually a different, brighter color than the rest of the body. The exact coloration depends on the species. Very young lovebirds have a black band across the top of their bill that fades as they age.
Family Tree
Like all parrots and parakeets, lovebirds are part of the large group (technically known as an order) of birds called Psittaciformes, and parrots are sometimes called psittacines [pronounced SIT a seens]. Parrots are also called hookbills, for their strongly hooked bills that they use for climbing, digging, cracking open seeds, and preening their feathers. The lovebirds are closely related to each other; all belong to the scientific genus Agapornis Agapornis comes from the Greek words agape (love) and ornis (bird).

There are several species of lovebirds (genus Agapornis and but the most commonly found species in the pet trade include peach faced lovebirds ( Agapornis roseicollis , masked lovebirds ( Agapornis personata ) and Fischer's lovebirds ( Agapornis fischeri ). There are many color mutations found in peach faced lovebirds and several mutations in some of the other species, so there are many color variations of lovebirds available.
    Size :
Lovebirds are small, compact parrots about 5-6 inches in length.
    Expected Life Span:
Up to 15 years or more.
    Temperament:
Very active, curious, and playful, lovebirds pack a lot of personality into a small package. They are also feisty little birds. They are very social and form deep bonds with their owners and are sometimes very cuddly birds, but their intense personalities can also make them prone to nipping and territorial aggressiveness and jealousy. Hand-raised babies make the best pets. Some experts believe that females are more prone to jealousy and territoriality than males.
    Find a Hand-Raised Baby:
Hand-raised babies definitely make the best pets. Still, regular handling and training are needed to maintain a tame lovebird (so a hand raised baby that hasn't been handled much as it gets older may be hard to hand tame again). If getting an older lovebird try to find one that was hand raised and has been handled regularly and has some training. Older lovebirds that are not hand tamed may require a great deal of patience for taming.

    Colors:
There are nine sub-species of lovebirds, the Peach-Faced, Red-Faced, Madagascar, Abyssinian, Nyasa, Swindern's, Masked, Black-Cheeked, and Fischer's. Color mutations also occur in several types, and are often available.

Lovebirds in the wild normally feed on grains, grass, seeds, and berries. They do best in captivity when fed a high-quality pelleted diet, supplemented with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly greens.

A lovebird (genus Agapornis, Greek for "lovebird") is a very social and affectionate parrot. The name "lovebird" stems from these birds' affectionate natures.
Weights and Measures: Lovebirds are about 13-17 cm in size, 40-60 grams in weight and characterized by a small, stocky build and a short, blunt tail. This makes them some of the smallest parrots in the world. The beak is rather large for their overall size.
Bird of Many Colors: Many lovebirds are green, although color mutations can feature many different colors. Some lovebird species, like Fischer's, black cheeked, and the yellow collared lovebird, have a white ring around the eye.
Genders and Feathers: Only some of the lovebird species are sexually dimorphic (meaning that females and males look very different). This includes the black-winged lovebird, the gray headed lovebird, and the black collared lovebird.
Just the Facts: Eight of the different Lovebird species come from the mainland of Africa. The ninth species, Agapornis canus, originates from Madagascar. In the wild the different species are separated geographically. Lovebirds live in small flocks and eat mainly fruit, vegetables, some grasses and seed. Black-winged lovebirds also enjoy figs.
Bird Bonds: Lovebirds form very close bonds with their mates, usually lasting for life. This is reflected by the lovebird's name in other languages: in German, "die Unzertrennlichen," and in French "les inséparables"- "inseparables." For this reason, many people feel strongly that lovebirds in captivity should be kept only in pairs. Others believe that lovebirds, like other parrots, are social animals who can bond with human companions when given a great deal of care and attention. Life span

    Lovebirds
Lovebirds ( Agapornis) are known for their paired and affectionate company. Responsive behavior and mimicry to human speech and communication make them excellent pets. These vocal birds are stereotypically perceived as mates for life and docile yet playful. Hand raised birds can result in loving birds that can be petted, stroked, coached into tricks or just mellow inhabitants of a domesticated pet family. Lovebirds bond with owners and mates.
Lovebirds naturally are sold in pairs. Single birds can be raised, but the sociable birds deserve a companion in the case of a busy or heavily working owner. Lovebirds like to chirp and be curious, and explore their limited dominion. Lovebird tricks included head bobbing, neck shaking, turning around on a perch, shaking hands, waving, or cheeping or dancing in rhythm to music. Lovebirds have unfortunately become targets of avian flu concerns. The demand for color mutations has evolved some unhealthy breeding trends. Specialized breeding for commercial sale has warranted additional veterinary safeguards. Parrots and hummingbirds also can host communicable infections. Lovebirds bred or raised legally will likely have more veterinary records and proof against protection than birds sourced elsewhere. Top of the head, breast, under part and bills can have distinctive markings and color. Wings shoulders, stripes, and feather tufts with contrasting crest colors and wing tips make amazing combinations. Lovebirds have dutch blue, green or peach colorations. Peach faced birds are lovebirds whose coloration reached their "brow" or forehead. Developing birds will form colors in areas as their heads and wing spans develop.

Lutino Albino Breeding Data Fischer's are very prolific producers and very good parents. They are always eager to breed if the materials are available. I use palm leaves and the husks from sweetcorn for nesting material. The average clutch is four to six and hatching around 23 days. Fischer's fledge quickly for lovebirds as early as 5 to 6 weeks. This lovebird offers hardiness and reliability to the beginner.

AGAPORNIS FISCHERI This species was discovered in 1887 by Dr Fischer in North Western Tanzania, south of Lake Victoria. The sexes are similar in appearance, basically green, with light green on the underparts. The forehead, cheeks and throat are bright orange, merging into yellowish orange on the breast and nape of the neck. The rump is violet and there are blue, orange, and black markings on the tail. The beak is red, the feet and legs gray. The irises are brown and there is a white eyering. This species is fairly common in captivity, breeds readily, and a number of colour mutations have been developed.
