    LOVEBIRDS
by Anne Johnson Lovebirds are the second smallest species of parrot. Their weight range is 42 to 60 grams. Females tend to be slighter larger than the males. All nine species are in the genius AGAPORNIS. Native to Africa and surrounding islands, many species were imported into the U.S. in large numbers in the late 20 th century. The most common is the Peach-Face. Peach Face Lovebirds come in a wide variety of color mutations including normal green, Dutch-Blue, Lutino, Pied, Creamino, Cinnamon, and in combinations of the above. Due to the relative ease of breeding in captivity peach-face are quite common in aviaries and in pet stores. Color does not reflect on individual pet quality, so choose your bird for its personality. Birds who were hand-fed make excellent pets. Parent raised lovebirds can be difficult to tame. When considering the purchase of a lovebird you should take into account the fact that they are full of energy, and can be quite noisy with their endless chattering and shrill scream, although not anywhere nearly as loud as the larger parrots. Lovebirds are extremely playful and a joy to watch. With their boundless energy they will swing from toy to toy, hop from perch to perch, never seeming to tire. There is nothing more comical than watching a lovebird do the "birdie splits", or playing in their water dish, or rolling around on the bottom of the cage with a ball. They enjoy perching on their owners shoulder and playing in their owner's hair. Hiding in your hair, under your collar, in your pocket, in a empty paper towel roll, etc., is a favorite game.

CARING FOR lovebirds. lovebirds are little balls of energy that may well beguile customers with their exciting array of colors and playful antics.
http://prettybirds.net/Lovebirds.htm
CARING FOR LOVEBIRDS Lovebirds are little balls of energy that may well beguile customers with their exciting array of colors and playful antics. With three commonly available species and numerous color mutations, lovebirds offer variety to bird customers and make spectacular, eye appealing displays in your store. Be sure to provide new lovebird owners with pointers about care and husbandry, match them with an appropriate lovebird, and ensure they take home plenty of toys and a nestbox or roost for these lively avian companions. Three species of lovebirds are available to pet owners: the common peach-faced in its many color mutations; the masked lovebird with a green or blue body, black mask and white eye-ring; and the Fisher's lovebird, available in a few color mutations. Other species are prevalent but are rarely available as pets. Lovebirds can be good pets for novice bird owners who understand their special requirements. Owners must keep playing with and socializing their bird. The experienced bird owner will enjoy a lovebird's spunk and may want to become involved in breeding and exhibiting the many color mutations. Bird lovers who share their lives with a hand-fed lovebird enjoy its antics. They are eternally active pets that love to climb and hang upside down on their toys, and will snuggle inside pockets and T-shirts. Pet lovebirds require attention every day to keep this level of tameness and to maintain their pet quality. It is rare to tame a lovebird that has not been hand-fed. These individuals are better suited for a colorful aviary situation.

Lovebirds belong to the genus Agapornis. Lovebirds can be classified as aggressive birds to other birds as well as their own species. The Madagascar lovebird was once held but has not been seen since about 1990. The 5 species currently listed on the "Inventory of Exotic (non-native) Bird Species known to be in Australia, 2002" held in Australia are from Africa. Masked and Fischer's Lovebirds are members of the white eye-ringed group of lovebirds. Agapornis = Agape + Ornis, the Greek words for Love + Bird = Lovebird.

Home Choosing Your Pet Birds Lovebirds
Lovebirds are very social and form deep bonds with their owners. If you are short on time to spend with your lovebird, then it is best to get him or her a companion. Species: There are several species of lovebirds, such as the genus Agapornis. But the most commonly found species in the pet trade include peach faced lovebirds, or Agapornis roseicollis, masked lovebirds (Agapornis personata) and Fischer's lovebirds (Agapornis fischeri). There are many color mutations found in peach faced lovebirds and several mutations in some of the other species, so there are many color variations of lovebirds available.
Size: Lovebirds are small, compact parrots about 5-6 inches in length. Expected Life Span: Up to 15 years or more. Temperament
Very active, curious, and playful, lovebirds pack a lot of personality into a small package. They are also feisty little birds. They are very social and form deep bonds with their owners and are sometimes very cuddly birds, but their intense personalities can also make them prone to nipping and territorial aggressiveness and jealousy. Hand-raised babies make the best pets. Some experts believe that females are more prone to jealousy and territoriality than males. Find a Hand-Raised Baby
Hand-raised babies definitely make the best pets. Still, regular handling and training are needed to maintain a tame lovebird (so a hand raised baby that hasn't been handled much as it gets older may be hard to hand tame again). If getting an older lovebird try to find one that was hand raised and has been handled regularly and has some training. Older lovebirds that are not hand tamed may require a great deal of patience for taming.

Lovebirds
A lovebird is short, thick-bodied parrot about 5 to 6 inches long from head to tail. He has a relatively large beak for his size. The basic, or ground, color of lovebirds is green. This group of birds was named lovebirds because they groom each other constantly and sit as close together as possible when resting or sleeping. Lovebirds are classified as belonging to the Psittaccidae family, genus Agapornis. They all come from Africa and the Island of Madagascar, off Africa's east coast. Although the ground color of wild lovebirds is green, some species also have gray, pink, red, blue and yellow feathers. In addition, mutations developed by breeders come in many other hues. a mutation is a change in a normal characteristic, such as color, that can occur spontaneously for no apparent reason. In the wild, a bird with color mutation probably will not survive. Others of his species may not recognize him as one of their own and may kill him. The color mutation may also make the bid more vulnerable to attack by predators. Lovebirds are so small, compared to larger parrots, that they need only a relatively small cage. They take up little space, making them ideal for any living accommodation. These little

Bird Guide
LOVEBIRDS
Lovebirds are originally from Africa. They are a small bird, ranging from 4 to 6 inches long. There are nine different species of lovebirds. Lovebirds are divided into 3 groups. The eye-ringed, the sexually dimorphic and the intermediate. Lovebirds, if kept singly, can be wonderful companions. It is a myth that lovebirds need to be kept as pairs. Lovebirds are excellent breeding birds and are very prolific. They also breed throughout the year instead of being seasonal. However, they should not be kept with other species of birds since lovebirds can be among the most aggressive of all parrots. Lovebirds can make an excellent first bird, for both adults and children alike. It is important that you get any lovebird as a handfed baby, then a single lovebird can be a wonderful entertaining pet. Handfed babies bond very strongly to people. They love to cuddle and spend a lot of time with their owners. They are capable of talking (though very few do learn to talk) and of learning tricks. They love toys and are very much the acrobat when it comes to playing with them. Lovebirds are curious and have a boundless amount of energy. They can become nippy when they mature. Lovebirds are also more independent and strong-willed than some of the smaller parrots. They need daily interaction or they may revert back to their wild state, even if they were handfed. They are not too noisy when compared to other parrots, though their chirps can be annoying when loud.
