Breeding Lovebirds I am going to talk about breeding in indoor cages because that is all I know about as my lovebirds are indoors and not in avairys. It is best to restrict breeding in lovebirds in the warmer months of the year, but as the lovebirds use their nesting boxes for roosting aswell as breeding, it is hard some times to stop them. The best way is to supply boxes containing a layer of peat only and not additional nesting materials when you do not want them to breed. All kinds of nest boxes are suitable for for lovebirds, ranging from hollowed outg logs to square timber fashioned out of unplaned timber. Lovebirds unlike the mojority of parrotlike birds, use nesting materials so the inside of the box must have a greater volume than that supplied for members of similar sized birds in the parrot family. A good average size for lovebirds is a box with a dimension of 25cm high , 20 cm wide and 15 cm deep. The box should be constructed out of timber at least 2 cm thick, which will stand up to the whittling activities of the birds and to retain temperature. The entrance hole about 5cm in diameter, is made near the top of the box and a small perch about 7 cm long should be placed just below this. Most lovebirds require a high humidity in the nest during incubation so a 5cm layer of damp peat is added to the base. Preferred nesting materials include the bark of trees and pieces of straw. Non poisonous tiwgs should be added to the cage or near the cage such as twigs from fruit trees or willow, I add some Flax leaves which a replace daily, but palm leaves will do the same. The birds will soon busy themselves stripping the plant material and tucking it uder their wings and taking it to the nest. Additional material should be made availiable through out nesting period as the hen will replenish the nestat regular intervals and the added material will help mantain humidity.

    http://www.singing-wings-aviary.com/lovebirds.htm
(Agapornis Personata) Masked Lovebird (Agapornis Roseicollis) Peach-Faced Lovebird Common Names Lovebirds, Lovies Description In the normal form of Black-masked Lovebirds the crown, forehead, cheeks and upper nape are black-brown while the throat, chest, lower nape and upper back are yellow outlined with red-orange. The back, wings and tail are a dark green with the primary and secondary flight feathers being green-black. The end of the tail when flared shows a black-red band and the beak is dark red. There under belly is a bright yellow-green while the legs are gray. The Masked Lovebirds have brown eyes with wide white eye-rings. Both sexes look alike with no noticeable differences in posture or tail flaring. Although, they can be sexed by behavior as normally the hen only gathers nesting material and is slightly heavier. Size : These birds range from 5-7 inches (13-18cm) with Peach-faced being the largest of the species. Origin : Most lovebird species originated from South Africa with the exception of the Abyssinian which is from northeast Africa and the Madagascar which was first distributed in Malagasy Republic (Madagascar) a small island southeast of Africa.

    Cockatiels and Lovebirds
    A small introduction
Warning: This is just an intro page. I am not a trained aviculturalist. This is not and should not be your final guide to bird-keeping!! IF YOUR BIRD IS SICK OR INJURED PLEASE TAKE IT TO AN AVIAN VET!!! I'm limiting this to cockatiels and lovebirds because I have only owned two cockatiels and one lovebird (and a bunch of untame budgies). Larger parrots share much in common with these smaller members of the family, but their needs and their abilities differ greatly. If you are planning on getting a pet bird, or are a new owner, I highly recommend the magazine BIRD TALK . In addition, you should buy/borrow books on bird keeping at a library, bookstore, or good petstore. And definitely locate a good, qualified avian vet right away, if you haven't already! He or she will be much more qualified to answer your health/medical questions than me. Other related pages at this site:

Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a bird!
As many of you may already know, birds can become very loving companions if you provide them with the same love they want and need in return.
Throughout this site, you will find a lot of useful information on birds of all types. Because we specialize in the breeding of Cockatiels, you may find that a lot of the information pertains specifically to them. However, much of this information can be applied to all species of pet birds.
All of our birds are available at wholesale cost and in some instances, we do accept birds on consignment. Most of our bred birds, usually the small and large hookbills, are handfed babies. Because of this, you are likely to get a bird who has already got a loving personality right from the start. :) We also breed softbills, but in most cases they are not handfed. Our hookbills include, but are not limited to: Cockatiels, Indian Ringnecks, Conures , Love Birds, and Budgies (Parakeets). Our softbills include, but are not limited to:

    73. Lovebirds - Inquisitive, Intelligent Personality
lovebirds are small parrots full of personality. They are inquisitive, intelligent and assertive. They believe they are as large and important as any parrot.
    http://www.astepupbird.com/lovebirds.html
    Lovebirds
    "Lovebirds - More than
    just another pretty face."
Lovebirds are small parrots full of personality. They believe they are as large and important as any parrot there is, and if you own one you know this is true. They can make excellent pets, but if you want a true companion, it is probably better to own just one.
Lovebirds means just that, and they will love their partner for life, be it bird or human companion.
Two of them, unless trained early on to interact with you, will usually become enamored with each other and not be as attentive or tame. Hand fed babies are easily trained to be calm and gentle. They are not known to be good talkers and their sounds can be loud at times, but they make up for it in their entertaining antics. There are different types, with the peach-faced being the most common . Masked lovebirds, which have white eye rings, are also often kept as pets. They are all beautiful with their bright feathers and many color variations and patterns have been developed. If you have a chance to attend a bird show, you will be fascinated by the many colors and varieties. Intelligent and inquisitive , they are remarkable cage escape artists . They will destroy woodwork as quickly as their larger cousins, and paper is not safe, if you own a peach-face. A paperback book can quickly be reduced to strips. Females will chew narrow strips of paper and tuck them in their rump feathers. They will take them back to the cage and build a nest with them. When a pair are defending their nest space they can become defensive. However, they usually make good parents and can be quite prolific, with the ability to produce a dozen chicks a year, given the chance.
