MedicineWorld.Org: Lung cancer main page
There are two basic types of lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer (previously known as oat cell lung cancer) comprises of about 20% of all cases of lung cancer. All other lung cancer types are collectively called non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer consists of a heterogeneous group of lung cancer with mainly three sub types: adeno carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Even though the non-small cell comprises of different cell types, they usually show a similar behavior and are mostly treated in a similar way. Following is a break up of sub-types of non-small cell lung cancer. Adenocarcinoma (40% of all lung cancers), squamous cell type (30% of all lung cancers), large cell type (10% of all lung cancers).

Who we are and who we serve:

The Liz Martocci Lung Cancer Foundation was founded to financially support those without health insurance so they receive the medical care they so deserve as quickly as possible, address the informational needs of people living with lung cancer and their loved ones and provide compassion and support to those facing the many challenges of lung cancer. A new case, of lung cancer, is diagnosed approximately every 2 minutes and a grim 5-year survival rate of only 14% exists, there is a deep need for an urgent response.
Since our beginning, we have witnessed, first hand, the hopeless need for support in living expenses, doctor referrals, and genuine love. We have devoted ourselves to addressing these issues and are dedicated to helping people living with lung cancer overcome these issues.
The Liz Martocci Lung Cancer Foundation works daily to:
    Our Mission:

Our mission was to make sure no other family felt the way we had the day mom was DX. A family full of fear and outrage because their mother, sister, daughter, wife did not have medical insurance. A family wrecked by the recent (or not so) economy. Ours maybe not so different from YOURS. A FAMILY READY to make a change.

    Radon Gas Kills
More than 40,000 dead each year. One killer.
    Radon in the Home
Over 40,000 people in the United States and Europe die each year from lung cancer caused by exposure to radon gas.
Most of these people are exposed to radon in the home. And yet, the majority of them are unaware of the health risks posed by radon, unaware that their home has dangerously elevated levels of radon, and, probably, unaware of what radon even is.
Part of the fault lies with governments and health organizations, which have failed to respond appropriately to so many deaths. Information about radon gas is not as widespread as it should be (although the situation is improving). But, part of the problem lies also with the homeowner: it's your home and your health. Educate yourself
have to test for it. Tests are cheap and easy to administer. They're available online, even from sites like Amazon.
Finding out whether there is an elevated radon concentration in your home is your responsibility. Why? Because shirking this responsibility will hurt only you.
Car accidents close roads, slow down the flow of business; airborne diseases can affect anyone; and guns pose a physical threat to the government. Hence, there are initiatives to cut down on these problems.

    94. Jeff Pawluk
Personal account about her son who fought a brave battle with lung cancer.
    http://marta652002.tripod.com/JeffPawluk.htm
Jeffrey Arthur Pawluk August 4, 1956 - January 18, 2000 "When you lose a parent, you lose part of your past, when a spouse dies, you have lost the present, but when you lose a child, you lose part of your future" I have often heard it said that as long as you remember your loved one, they will never die. I would like this page to be a place where anyone that knew and loved my son, Jeff, can learn more about him and his much too short life. Jeff was born in a hospital in Flushing, New York. As large a baby as he was, 8 lbs 11 oz, the birth was easy. When he was born I looked at this baby as a miracle, first I had ever experienced. I thought, "how can anyone ever doubt that there is a God when it is possible to create a child like this." He was perfect in every way. He was big boned so we all knew Jeff would grow up to be a big man. We lived in New York the first seven years of Jeff's life and then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida along with our two younger daughters, Linda and Wendy. Jeff was always sick during the winter months suffering from Asthmatic Bronchitis and always on the verge of Pneumonia. The doctor said if he was his child, he would move to a warmer climate....and that is why we decided to move to Florida. Strange, but after we made our move, Jeff never had any problems in that area all the years of growing up in Fort Lauderdale. When Jeff finished his second hitch in the Navy, he came home and tried working the restaurant business. He had developed three very bad habits during his time in the service, which were smoking, drinking and coffee. I was concerned about how all these habits could affect his future life but I knew Jeff was a big boy and would have to make his own decisions. Being in the restaurant business didn't help him to give up the cigarettes or the drinking. It wasn't long before he realized that this was not what he wanted to do with his life which is why he decided to make an effort to go back to school. He looked into many colleges and decided he would make a geographic move and then maybe things would get better for him. He enrolled in the University of Alaska in Juneau, Alaska.

    95. Passive Smoking Does Cause Lung Cancer
The World Health Organization (WHO) sets the record straight secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in non-smokers.
    http://www.who.int/inf-pr-1998/en/pr98-29.html
Press Release WHO/29 9 March 1998 PASSIVE SMOKING DOES CAUSE LUNG CANCER DO NOT LET THEM FOOL YOU The World Health Organization (WHO) has been publicly accused of suppressing information. Its opponents say that WHO has withheld from publication its own report that was aimed at but supposedly failed to scientifically prove that there is an association between passive smoking, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), and a number of diseases, lung cancer in particular. Both statements are untrue. The study in question is a case-control study on the effects of ETS on lung cancer risk in European populations, which has been carried out over the last seven years by 12 research centres in 7 European countries under the leadership of WHO's cancer research branch the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The results of this study, which have been completely misrepresented in recent news reports, are very much in line with the results of similar studies both in Europe and elsewhere: passive smoking causes lung cancer in non-smokers.

Many nurses are motivated to participate in smoking cessation and prevention initiatives because they witness firsthand the devastation that tobacco causes their patients, but the nursing profession could be doing even more to spread the anti-tobacco message. You've read the article.
