    What are Neurological Sequelae Of Lupus?
    Lupus (also called systemic lupus erythematosus ) is a disorder of the immune system. Normally, the immune system protects the body against invading infections and cancers. In lupus, the immune system is over-active and produces increased amounts of abnormal antibodies that attack the body's tissues and organs. Lupus can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous system, and blood vessels. The signs and symptoms of lupus differ from person to person; the disease can range from mild to life threatening. Initial symptoms of lupus may begin with a fever, vascular headaches, epilepsy, or psychoses. A striking feature of lupus is a butterfly shaped rash over the cheeks. In addition to headache, lupus can cause other neurological disorders, such as mild cognitive dysfunction, organic brain syndrome, peripheral neuropathies, sensory neuropathy, psychological problems (including personality changes, paranoia, mania, and schizophrenia), seizures, transverse myelitis, and paralysis and stroke.

    Each person with lupus has slightly different symptoms that can range from mild to severe and may come and go over time. However, some of the most common symptoms of lupus include painful or swollen joints ( arthritis ), unexplained fever, and extreme fatigue. A characteristic red skin rash (the so-called butterfly or malar rash ) may appear across the nose and cheeks. Rashes may also occur on the face and ears, upper arms, shoulders, chest, and hands. Because many people with lupus are sensitive to sunlight (called photosensitivity), skin rashes often first develop or worsen after sun exposure.

MeSH Systemic lupus erythematosus (pronounced /sɨˈstÉ›mɨk ˈluËpÉ™s ˌɛrɨˌθiËməˈtoÊŠsÉ™s/ listen , often abbreviated to SLE or lupus , is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease (or autoimmune connective tissue disease ) that can affect any part of the body. As occurs in other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. It is a Type III hypersensitivity reaction caused by antibody-immune complex formation. SLE most often harms the heart joints skin lungs ... kidneys , and nervous system . The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares ) alternating with remissions . The disease occurs nine times more often in women than in men, especially in women in child-bearing years ages 15 to 35, and is more common in those also of non-European descent. SLE is treatable through addressing its symptoms , mainly with cyclophosphamide corticosteroids and immunosuppressants ; there is currently no cure. SLE can be fatal, although with recent medical advances, fatalities are becoming increasingly rare. Survival for people with SLE in the United States, Canada, and Europe is approximately 95%

Our programs and supportive services are designed to increase awareness and improve the quality of life for people living with Lupus through education, community outreach services, and support of research that will lead to effective treatment and cure for the disease. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose, difficult to manage and, to date, without cure. For most people, Lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few body organs; for others, it may cause serious and even life threatening problems. Current statistics indicate that Lupus affects adult women approximately 10 times more frequently than men. Children are also affected by Lupus. Even though Lupus is more prevalent in this country than AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy and cystic fibrosis, it is the least known of all major diseases.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Lupus erythematosus Classification and external resources ICD L ILDS ICD Lupus erythematosus is a category for a collection of diseases with similar underlying problems with immunity Symptoms of these diseases can affect many different body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs. Four main types of lupus exist — systemic lupus erythematosus discoid lupus erythematosus drug-induced lupus erythematosus , and neonatal lupus erythematosus . Of these, systemic lupus erythematosus is the most common and serious form of lupus. Photosensitivity's relationship to and influence on the systemic manifestations of lupus remain to be defined. Mechanisms for photosensitivity might include: modulation of autoantibody location, cytotoxic effects, apoptosis induction with autoantigens in apoptotic blebs, upregulation of adhesion molecules and cytokines, induction of nitric oxide synthase expression and ultraviolet-generated antigenic DNA. Tumor necrosis factor alpha also seems to play a role in the development of photosensitivity.

    Lupus Information :: Systemic Lupus
    Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
    Lupus is a life-threatening, antibody-mediated disease in which disease-causing antibodies damage various tissues. According to recent statistics compiled by the Lupus Foundation of America, epidemiological studies and other sources, the number of lupus patients in the United States is estimated to be between 500,000 and 1,000,000, and approximately 16,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Approximately nine out of 10 lupus patients are women, who usually develop the disease during their childbearing years. Lupus is characterized by a multitude of symptoms that may include chronic kidney inflammation, which may lead to kidney failure, serious episodes of cardiac and central-nervous-system inflammation, as well as extreme fatigue, arthritis and rashes. Approximately 80% of all lupus patients progress to serious symptoms. Approximately 40-45% of lupus patients will develop kidney disease which is a leading cause of death in lupus.
    Anti-dsDNA Antibodies and Lupus Nephritis
    Antibodies to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) can be detected in up to 85% of lupus patients who are not receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Anti-dsDNA antibodies are widely believed to cause kidney disease (nephritis), often resulting in morbidity and mortality in lupus patients.

    Early Lupus Symptoms
    There are a wide variety of lupus symptoms, but there are some that you need to be aware of, these are early lupus symptoms that will begin to manifest before you ever suspect the disease. You may feel very tired all the time, there may be rashes showing up where you normally never had rashes. You may start having difficulties with your kidneys in more severe situations. But the most common early lupus symptoms is the fatigue. This affects about 90 percent of those with lupus. Even if you have a very mild case of lupus, it can cause so much fatigue that you will not be able to engage in your typical daily activities or exercise. Early lupus symptoms also manifest through painful joints and muscles. There are approximately 70 percent of lupus patients who suffer from terrible joint and muscle pain, which is often the first sign of lupus. You may feel redness along with some warmth, there may also be swelling. You will feel this most typically first thing in the morning. You may experience this in both sides of your body, typically in the wrists, the small joints of your hands, elbows, ankles and knees. Skin rashes are quite common in the early symptoms of lupus. They are a very important clue to diagnosing lupus. The most common rash is a butterfly rash across the nose and cheeks. There may also be skin sores, red spots on the arms, hands as well as mouth or lip sores. The rashes can be red or they may be a raised purple rash.
