Early Lupus Symptoms Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which can affect both men and women and also children of all ages.  Most frequently it develops in women between the ages of 15 and 45.  In this age range, Lupus is 8 times more common in women than in men.  For individuals younger than 15 or older than 45, Lupus seems to affect either sex equally. symptoms that characterize Lupus

Rashes may also occur on the face and ears, upper arms, shoulders, chest, and hands. • Lupus Diagnosis
Lupus is chronic and complex, and is often difficult to diagnose. There is no single laboratory test that can determine if a person has lupus. To complicate matters, many symptoms of lupus are similar to those of other diseases, and can come and go over weeks and months. It can often take years for a diagnosis to be made. To diagnose lupus, a doctor should be able to find physical or laboratory evidence of the condition, such as swelling of joints, protein in the urine, fluid around the lungs or heart, or a skin biopsy (test of a sample) that shows evidence of the disease. The doctor also will look at a person’s medical history and special tests to rule out other diseases.

Lupus is defined in Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary as 'originally any chronic, progressive, usually ulcerating, skin disease. In current usage when the word is used alone, it has no precise meaning' (Taber, 1273). This definition tends to underscore the enigma that is lupus, especially considering the simple definition provides eight different forms of lupus following it. When the term 'lupus' is used on House , it is almost always referring to systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE. This disease has acute episodes that is characterized as a chronic

    What is lupus?
s ystemic lupus erythematosus (ur-uh-thee-muh-TOH-suhss) or SLE. This is the most common type of lupus. Studies suggest that more than 16,000 new cases are reported annually across the country. Although lupus can affect almost any organ system, the disease, for most people, affects only a few parts of the body. For example, one person with lupus may have swollen knees and fever. Another person may be tired all the time or have kidney trouble. Someone else may have rashes. Normally, lupus develops slowly, with symptoms that come and go. Women who get lupus most often develop symptoms and are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45. But the disease also can develop in childhood or later in life.

    Systemic lupus erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder . SLE may affect the skin, joints, kidneys, and other organs.
    Causes
SLE (lupus) is an autoimmune disease. This means there is a problem with the body's normal immune system response. Normally, the immune system helps protect the body from harmful substances. But in patients with an autoimmune disease, the immune system cannot tell the difference between harmful substances and healthy ones. The result is an overactive immune response that attacks otherwise healthy cells and tissue. This leads to long-term (chronic) inflammation. The underlying cause of autoimmune diseases is not fully known. SLE may be mild or severe enough to cause death. SLE affects nine times as many women as men. It may occur at any age, but appears most often in people between the ages of 10 and 50. African Americans and Asians are affected more often than people from other races. SLE may also be caused by certain drugs. For information on this cause of SLE, see
