Luxembourg Culture
Luxembourg has been overshadowed by the culture of its neighbours, although, having been for much of its history a profoundly rural country, it retains a number of folk traditions. There are several notable museums, mostly located in the capital; these include the National Museum of History and Art, the History Museum of the City of Luxembourg, and the new Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art. The National Museum of Military History in Diekirch is especially known for its representations of the Battle of the Bulge. The city of Luxembourg itself is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, on account of the historical importance of its fortifications. The country has produced some internationally known artists, including the painters Joseph Kutter and Michel Majerus, as well as the photographer Edward Steichen. Steichen's The Family of Man exhibition is now permanently housed in Clervaux, and it has been placed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.

Luxembourg : Culture
Over a 400-year time, Luxembourg Castle (Chteau de Luxembourg) was repeatedly attacked and rebuilt by the Spaniards, Austrians, French, and Dutch, successively, to become the strongest fortress in Europe after Gibraltar. One such reinforcement was undertaken by the French military engineer Sbastien Le Prestre de Vauban, who redesigned the city's defensive fortifications after having orchestrated its siege in 1684 in the service of Louis XIV. The heart of the old town is the Fish Market ,around which stand several 17th- and 18th-century buildings, including the mansion housing the Luxembourg National Museum Um Bock, a 13th-century building and the city's oldest, is also located at the Fish Market. Among the city's other cultural institutions are the Jean-Pierre Pescatore Museum of fine arts and the History Museum of the City of Luxembourg .At the town of Hamm 4 miles (6 km) to the east is a World War II military cemetery with the graves of more than 5,000 U.S. soldiers, including those of Brigadier General Edward Betts and General George S. Luxembourg was the first city to be named European Capital of Culture twice. The first time was in 1995. In 2007, the European Capital of Culture was to be a cross-border area consisting of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland in Germany, the Walloon Region and the German-speaking part of Belgium, and the Lorraine area in France. The event was an attempt to promote mobility and the exchange of ideas, crossing borders in all areas, physical, psychological, artistic and emotional.

Luxembourg , located in western Europe, southeast of Belgium and between France and Germany, is a worthwhile country to visit on a vacation. Packed into 2,586 square kilometres are many impressive medieval castles (notably the ones at Vianden and Clervaux), beautiful scenery, and historical arti-facts dating back to the Roman occupation. The most popular destination is the spectacular fortress City of Luxembourg itself. Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe. In the west, it borders the Belgian province of Luxembourg, which is nearly twice the size of the country. The northern third of the country is known as the 'Oesling', and forms part of the Ardennes. It is dominated by hills and low mountains, including the Kneiff, which is the highest point, at 560 metres (1,837 ft). The southern two-thirds of the country is called the 'Gutland', and is more densely populated than the Oesling. It is also more diverse, and can be divided into five geographic sub-regions: Little Switzerland, the Luxembourg plateau, the Moselle valley, the Red Lands, and the Valley of the Seven Castles. The border between Luxembourg and Germany is formed by three rivers: the Moselle, the Sauer, and the Our. Luxembourg lies on the cultural divide between Romance Europe and Germanic Europe, borrowing customs from each of the distinct traditions. Luxembourg is trilingual; French, German, and Luxembourgish are official languages. Although it is a secular state, Luxembourg is predominantly Roman Catholic.

The EU's smallest state has decided that the time has come to change this situation and has embarked upon an ambitious multimillion-dollar cultural program. "Luxembourg simply wants to show that it is not only a major banking center in the world, but that it also has the potential to become an important artistic and cultural meeting place of the twenty-first century," affirmed Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, Luxembourg's minister of culture, higher education, and research.
