The disease is spread to humans from contact with the tick; it is not spread from one human to another. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the incidence of LD continues to rise and now accounts for more than 90 percent of all insect-borne illness in the US. About 20,000 people are infected each year in the US. The disease takes its name from Lyme, Connecticut, where the illness was first identified in the United States in 1975. Depending on the location, anywhere from less than 1 percent to more than 50 percent of the ticks are infected with spirochetes (bacteria that are usually carried by the tick). Lyme disease is a year round problem, although April through October is considered tick season. Cases of LD have been reported in 49 states in this country, with most cases occurring in:
  • the coastal northeast the mid-Atlantic states Wisconsin and Minnesota Northern California
Many cases have also been identified in large areas of Asia and Europe.

Lyme disease is an illness caused by a bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi , transmitted to humans by a tiny tick named Ixodes scapularis (commonly called the black legged or deer tick). Lyme disease may cause signs and symptoms affecting the skin, nervous system, heart, and/or joints of an infected person. More than 20,000 cases of the disease have been reported in Wisconsin residents since surveillance for Lyme disease began in 1980. Why is it called Lyme disease?
The first cluster of human illnesses associated with this bacterium was described near the town of Lyme, Connecticut during the mid 1970's. Who gets Lyme disease?
Males and females of all ages can get Lyme disease but children less than 16 years old and adults more than 40 years old appear to be at higher risk. People who spend time outdoors in tick-infested environments are at increased risk of exposure and exposure can occur whenever the temperature at ground level is warm enough for ticks to be active. In Wisconsin, most cases have occurred among persons living in the western half of the state. How is Lyme disease spread?

Causes
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi B. burgdorferi) . Certain ticks carry these bacteria. The ticks pick up the bacteria when they bite mice or deer that are infected with Lyme disease. You can get the disease if you are bitten by an infected tick. Lyme disease was first reported in the United States in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975. Cases have now been reported in most parts of the United States. Most of the cases occur in the Northeast, some parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the mid-Atlantic states, and along the Pacific coast. Lyme disease is usually seen during the late spring, summer, and early fall. There are 3 stages of Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease
What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by a kind of bacterium (germ) called a spirochete (say: spy-ro-keet). The disease is carried by deer ticks (found in the northeastern and north-central United States) and western black-legged ticks (found mostly on the Pacific Coast). These ticks can spread the disease to animals and humans through tick bites. These ticks are typically about the size of a sesame seed.
Lyme disease is most common in rural and suburban areas in the northeastern and midwestern states. Lyme disease is also found in other parts of the United States, as well as in Europe, Asia and Australia. Return to top
