About Melissa Kaplan About this CND Site Support This Site Advance Care Directives ... Search This Site Scarily enough, there are still health care providers out there who do not believe Lyme Disease is a real disease. Like those with CFS, FM and MCS, people with Lyme are told they are "just depressed" or "trying to get attention" or that it is "all in your head" (to be fair, since the spirochetes or their toxins can cross the blood brain barrier, it is in your head, though this is not quite what these doctors were implying...). If this typifies the response you got from your doctor, it's time to find a new one. Of course, most doctors rely on what the CDC and their state and county departments of health tell them. Anyone who has watched the CDC in action over the past several years (okay, decades ) know that whatever it is they are doing, it has little to do with disease control and prevention, especially when it comes to organisms as changeable and adaptive as parasites.

Lyme Disease
What is Lyme disease? Lyme disease is a bacterial disease transmitted by infected ticks. It was first recognized in the United States in 1975 after a mysterious outbreak of arthritis near Old Lyme, Connecticut. Since then, reports of Lyme disease have increased dramatically, and the disease has become an important public health problem. How does a person get Lyme disease? Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected deer tick, which also is known as the black-legged tick. (Not all ticks carry the bacterium, and a bite does not always result in the development of Lyme disease. However, since it is impossible to tell by sight which ticks are infected, it is important to avoid tick bites whenever possible.) Immature deer ticks can be very small, about the size of the head of a pin; adult deer ticks are slightly larger. Both can be infected with and transmit Lyme disease. Deer ticks acquire the bacteria by feeding primarily on small mammals infected with the bacteria, particularly the white-footed mouse. (Domestic animals can become infected with the Lyme disease bacteria and some may develop arthritis, e.g., dogs, cattle and horses.) (Click on image for a
larger view)
Image source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Deer ticks infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease have been found in Illinois. Areas in the United States where deer ticks are most frequently infected with Lyme disease are the northeastern United States (from Massachusetts to Maryland), northern California, and north central states, especially Minnesota and Wisconsin. However, Lyme disease has been reported in almost all states in the United States as well as in many countries throughout the world.

Share This Page I clearly remember the day I stepped out of my house to play golf with friends. I was enjoying my game, up to the time which one of my shot landed in bushy wooden spot, distant from a golf open area. I took out my golf ball and suddenly, I supposed a bug bit me. I felt extreme intolerable pain. I did not have any similar feeling of pain before. Probably, one or two weeks later, I observed a small, patchy red rash surrounding the bite. I started getting a feeling of being exhausted, my heart rate was increased and ears started ringing. At that time, I behaved abnormally. May be these were the initial Lyme symptoms. I visited a nearby clinic and narrated to doctor about my symptoms and my weird behavior. He said that I was suffering from a mental disorder, and that I need to see a psychiatrist . Then, I approached an analyst who sent me to another analyst, than to another and so forth. This vicious series continued until I met a specialist, who checked my rash and told me that I had Lyme disease symptoms, and was suffering from this disease. He started my

When I was first diagnosed with Lyme disease, I felt so relieved! Months of non-conclusive tests, frustrating evaluations, and the growing sense of insanity...it was going to be all behind me now! I had Lyme disease, and I was actually relieved to have all that fear and worry over. Little did I know that my nightmare had only just begun. That was over four years ago. Life has been a living hell for those years, and there is just barely a flickering light at the end of the tunnel. My LLD believes that I have been suffering with Lyme, Bartonella and Babesia for most of my life . Yes, it does explain the mystery illnesses, the infected organs that had to be removed without a clear diagnosis. And yes, it also explains the mysterious loss of hearing, and the excrutiating pain in my abdomen that would come and go... Does any of this sound familiar?

Lyme Disease:
Questionable Diagnosis and Treatment
Edward McSweegan, Ph.D.
Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded 17,002 cases [1]. The infection is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a spiral-shaped bacterium (spirochete) named after Dr. Willy Burgdorfer, the public health researcher who discovered it in 1982. The infection is often contracted during warm-weather months when ticks are active. The spirochete enters the skin at the site of the tick bite. After incubating for 3-30 days, the bacteria migrate through the skin and may spread to lymph nodes or disseminate through the bloodstream to organs or distant skin sites. Ixodes scapularis is the most common tick vector in the northeastern and miswestern U.S. The picture shows (from left to right) the nymph, adult male, and adult female. The spot on the thumb shows the relative size of the nymph. Lyme spirochetes
Borrelia burgdorphi Lyme disease frequently presents with a skin rash called erythema migrans (EM) and common flu-like symptoms of fever, malaise, fatigue, and muscle and joint pains. The characteristic EM rash is a flat or raised red area that expands, often with clearing at the center, to a diameter of up to 20 inches. However, it does not always occur, which can make the diagnosis more difficult, especially when the patient is not aware of having been bitten by a tick. Other early signs may include small skin lesions, facial nerve paralysis, lymphocytic meningitis, and heart-rhythm disturbances. Early infections usually are cured by two to four weeks of orally administered antibiotics (amoxicillin or doxycycline). However, if untreated or inadequately treated, neurologic, cardiac, or joint abnormalities may follow. Worldwide, Lyme disease has been directly responsible for fewer than two dozen deaths [2].

An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe. LD manifests itself as a multisystem inflammatory disease that affects the skin in its early, localized stage, and spreads to the joints, nervous system and, to a lesser extent, other organ systems in its later
