Lyme Disease Books Lyme Disease Information Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks; laboratory testing is helpful in the later stages of disease. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, landscaping, and integrated pest management. The ticks that transmit Lyme disease can occasionally transmit other tick-borne diseases as well.

LYME DISEASE
Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States in 1975, after a mysterious outbreak of arthritis near Lyme, Connecticut. Since then, reports of Lyme disease have increased dramatically, and the disease has become an important public health problem in some areas of the United States. Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a member of the family of spirochetes, or corkscrew-shaped bacteria.
How the disease is spread
Lyme disease is spread by the bite of ticks of the genus Ixodes that are infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. The deer (or bear) tick, Ixodes dammini, which normally feeds on the white-footed mouse, the white-tailed deer, other mammals, and birds, is responsible for transmitting Lyme disease bacteria to humans in the northeastern and north-central United States. (In these regions, this tick is also responsible for the spreading of babesiosis, a disease caused by a malaria-like parasite.) On the Pacific Coast, the bacteria are transmitted to humans by the western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, and in the southeastern states possibly by the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis.

Lyme Disease
P. E. Kaufman, P. G. Koehler and J. F. Butler Lyme disease was first documented in the United States in 1975. The organism that causes Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of a tick. Lyme disease is named for the town in Connecticut where some of the first cases in the U.S. occurred. Lyme disease cases have since been documented in about 43 states, with over 15,000 cases reported annually between 1998 and 2007. Over 260,000 cases have been reported in the U.S. between 1993 and 2007. During 2007, 27,444 Lyme disease cases were reported, making this the peak year. Between 43 and 47 cases of Lyme disease have been reported in Florida, making it an uncommon disease. Most cases of Lyme disease in the US occur in the Northeast and upper Midwest where I. scapularis are most abundant. The primary vector of Lyme disease in the U.S. is the black-legged tick (

Beating Lyme disease is of course the goal and the natural, alternative treatments you will find here will help on many levels. The natural therapies that follow are rooted in naturopathic medicine. While antibiotics may be a good initial option for many with Lyme disease, it is beneficial to have other natural and alternative therapies in place to help the process. Alternative treatments for Lyme disease are especially important as part of a primary treatment plan after discontinuing antibiotics. There will be those of you, like myself, who choose not to treat your Lyme disease with antibiotics and will instead use herbs and natural treatments to deal with the symptoms of Lyme disease and hopefully regain your life as it was. Whichever course you choose, I hope you will find useful information and therapies in this site. Hello, my name is Robert Myers. I am a naturopathic doctor and have had chronic Lyme disease (see

What are Neurological Complications Of Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial organism that is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected tick. Most people bitten by an infected tick develop a characteristic skin rash around the area of the bite. The rash may feel hot to the touch, and vary in size, shape, and color, but it will often have a "bull's eye" appearance (a red ring with a clear center). However, there are those who will not develop the rash, which makes Lyme disease hard to diagnose because its symptoms and signs mimic those of many other diseases. Seven to 10 days following an infected tick's bite, the first stage of Lyme disease begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain.
