Back to Macau Geography Location, Size, Border, and Coastline: Topography: Macau has generally flat terrain resulting from extensive land reclamation, but numerous steep hills mark the original natural land mass. The modern high-rise skyline of Macau obscures much of the hilly landscape. Macau's highest point is at Coloane Alto (174 meters above sea level). The Macau skyline both defines and obscures its topography. Courtesy Robert L. Worden Climate: The climate is subtropical and is hot and humid, with an average year-round temperature of 25C and temperatures exceeding 30C from June to September. Temperatures rarely fall below 14C (the average for January and February). There is about 2,030 millimeters of rainfall annually. Macau is exposed to tropical storms originating from the southern Pacific Ocean during the summer. Major destruction occurred in September 1874, when a devastating typhoon hit Macau and high seas swept across the low-lying area of the peninsula. Natural Resources: Negligible. In the past, large amounts of granite were extracted from Macau's hills for use as building material.

      Macau Introduction - Geography
      Macau Geography
Macau's economy is based largely on tourism, including gambling, and textile and garment manufacturing, banking and other financial services. The opening of the formerly monopolized gambling sector in 2002 has led to significant new investment in casinos, hotels, and related facilities. The recent growth in gambling and tourism has been driven primarily by mainland Chinese and tourists from Hong Kong. Mainland Chinese tourists account for about 55% of all tourist arrivals to Macau. Macau depends on China for most of its food, fresh water, and energy imports. The European Union and Hong Kong are the main suppliers of raw materials and capital goods. In the last few years much of Macau's manufacturing operations (mainly textiles and garments) have moved across the border to mainland China. Mainland competition, along with the 2005 end of Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA) quotas, which had provided a near guarantee of export markets, are slowly spelling the end of Macau's low-end mass production of textiles; the bulk of the SAR's merchandise export earnings. For future growth, Macau is becoming a regional center for gaming, tourism, conference and group travel.

Dateline: 06/07/99 (Rev. 12/13/99) On the west side of the Zhu (formerly Pearl) River Delta, 38 miles (61 km) west of Hong Kong, sits the tiny Portuguese territory of Macau. After 442 years of Portuguese control, this enclave of 430,000 residents reverts to full Chinese control on December 20, 1999. Portugal , the mighty Renaissance-era exploration and trading power, settled at Macau in 1557 and formally annexed the territory in 1849. In the 18th and 19th centuries, China allowed only the ports of Macau and upstream Guangzhou (formerly Canton) to be open to European traders. In an effort to allow China control of its former territory, on April 13, 1987 the prime ministers of China and Portugal met and signed the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration. The declaration established December 20, 1999 as the date when Macau would return to Chinese control. Although Portuguese is spoken by less than two percent of Macanese as their primary language, both Portuguese and Cantonese (spoken by 96% of the population) will remain official languages of the new Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) on December 20. In addition, the current currency, the Pataca, will remain official in the SAR.
