Throughout its history, the present-day territory of Macedonia has been a crossroads for both traders and conquerors moving between the European Continent and Asia Minor. Each of these transiting powers left its mark upon the region, giving rise to a rich and varied cultural and historical tradition.
The ancient territory of Macedon, included, in addition to the areas of the present-day Macedonia, large parts of present-day Northern Greece and Southwestern Bulgaria. This ancient kingdom reached its height during the reign of Alexander III ("the Great"), who extended Macedon's influence over most of Asia Minor, the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, and even parts of India. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, the Macedon Empire gradually declined, until it was conquered in 168 BC and made a province by the Romans in 148 BC.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the territory of Macedonia fell under the control of the Byzantine Empire. It was during this period (the 6th and 7th centuries) that large groups of Slavic people migrated to the Balkan region. The Serbs, Bulgarians, and Byzantines fought for control of Macedonia until the late 14th century, when the territory was again conquered, this time by the Ottoman Turks and remained under Turkish rule until 1912.

Robin Lane Fox October 2004 Paperback A History of Macedonia F. W. Walbank Aug 1988 Hardcover Book Description The history of Macedoniathe most remarkable of all monarchic statesis here presented from the death of Philip II through the state's loss of independence in 167 B.C. Recent discoveries about Macedonian arts and institutions have aided the authors in recounting the impact of Alexander's career, the civil war between the generals, and the final phase of Macedonian history, the wars with Rome. Alexander the Great and His Times Agnes Savill October 1990 Hardcover From AudioFile Part One of Savill's Alexander bridges both time and distance, fires the imagination and transports the reader to Asia Minor circa 340 B.C. Part Two re-examines the historical estimate of Alexander in light of recent studies. It is both balanced and objective. Blackstone's production is top quality. Nadia May's voice is slightly gravelly but delightfully clear and forceful, and her reading is judiciously paced. The book contains many long passages from classical sources, which are read with intelligence and empathy for the listener not attuned to the prose style of Pericles or Demosthenes. Though not light, both Savill and this production make a pleasure of audio history. P.E.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

  • Modern times Occupying the bigger part of northern Greece, Macedonia first appears on the historical scene as a geographical-political unit in the 5th century BC, when it extended from the upper waters of the Haliakmon and Mount Olympus to the river Strymon. In the following century it reached the banks of the Nestos. The history of the Macedonians, however, may be said to commence somewhere around the beginning of the 7th century BC; at this time the Greek tribe of the Makedones, whose home was in Orestis, began to expand, driving out the Thracians and contending with the Illyrians, and gradually occupied Eordaia, Bottiaia, Pieria and Almopia, finally settling in the region called by Thucydides "Lower Macedonia, or Macedonia by the Sea".
    Prehistoric period
This region of high mountains, large rivers, lakes and fertile plains makes its appearance on the stage of civilization as early as the Early Neolithic Period (Nea Nikomedeia, region of Yanitsa). The density of the settlements, however, shows a vertical increase at the end of the 5th millennium BC (Late Middle Neolithic) and attests, throughout the whole of the region though especially in central and east Macedonia, to significant mobility on the part of the population and to its characteristic dynamism. These same settlements prospered until the Early Bronze Age - that is, until the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC -most of them organized in the plains, with houses either square or rectangular in plan, sometimes with wooden posts and sometimes with stone foundations for the walls.

    Macedonia History
Macedonia history dates back to a very old period and according to archaeological sources the Macedonian kingdom was founded in between 7000 and 3500 BC. Macedonia history is very interesting as it has many glorious events and surprising facts, one of them being that the ancient Macedonians were completely a different race.
The history of ancient Macedonians begins with Hellenic immigrants who had come from Argos and had founded the city of ancient Macedonia. Ancient Macedonia was ruled by the Argive tribes who had acquired many areas of the ancient city. The Macedonians came under Persian dominance during B.C. 492 and the repulsiveness of the Persians allowed Macedonia to become free. Macedonia then faced serious threat from Athens and the Thracian kingdom, however, under the able leadership of Perdiccas, Macedonia overcame both these powers.
There came the rule of Archelaus, who laid the foundation of Macedonia as an invincible military power. The murder of Archelaus started a period of disturbance which was solved after Philips ascended the throne in BC 359. Philips then repressed all the rival powers and started building up the Macedonian empire.
Thereafter Alexander the Great, the greatest Macedonian Prince of all times came to the throne. He conquered Babylon, Persia, Susa, Persepolis, Asia Minor and many other remarkable kingdoms.
