What Is a Macrobiotic Breakfast? The macrobiotic diet is centered on a nutritionally holistic approach. There are several pieces to the macrobiotic philosophy, but the diet is basically vegetarian, focusing on whole grains and vegetables cooked over flame (not by electricity or microwave). Definition of Macrobiotic In Greek, "macro" means "big" and "biotic" means "concerning life." Together, macrobiotic means "big view of life." It is the underlying theme of a lifestyle which incorporates nature into the diet and eliminates processed foods. Macrobiotic Cures Macrobiotics is often seen as simply a diet program consisting of natural, healthy foods. However, it is more than merely a way of eating. For followers of macrobiotics, it is a way of life. A macrobiotic lifestyle looks at how elements like food, relationships and the environment affect a person's health, attitudes and behavior....

      Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics is a means to live comfortably in harmony with nature. Essentially, macrobiotics is one particular lifestyle. In Japan, Yoshikazu Sakurazawa, known as George Ohsawa in the west, read a book about healing with natural Japanese foods by Sagen Isizaka from the Meiji era. Using this information he healed himself of tuberculosis. Ohsawa then started using the term macrobiotics (large/long life) which was first coined in Greece by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. Ohsawa interpreted this universal term, which is applicable to balanced natural foods eating in all cultures, to describe a path to health and healing with traditional Japanese natural foods. Michio and Aveline Kushi were students of George Ohsawa. They popularized the macrobiotic approach to health further with footholds in America, South America, Europe and worldwide. The basic idea of Macrobiotics is very simple. It is thought that by eating balanced foods such as grains and vegetables that are more local and in season, we can maintain good physical and spiritual health and live in harmony with nature. A typical Macrobiotic plate for our area will consist of a large portion of grains, beans, seaweed, vegetables and vegetable protein, such as tofu, seitan, beans and tempeh. Following the traditional Japanese food model of a simple and natural diet, macrobiotics dictates eating food in a natural way – unrefined and unprocessed. But what does unrefined and unprocessed mean? It means for example, eating whole foods such as vegetables together with their skins and stems. It means not eating husked, processed rice but whole grain brown rice. It means, we living people should eat from a living land – taking food in season, in its entirety.

THE ALCHEMYCAL PAGES
" When the sound and wholesome nature of man acts as an entirety, when he feels himself in the world as in a grand, beautiful, worthy and worthwhile whole, when this harmonious comfort affords him a pure, untrammelled delight: then the universe, if it could be sensible of itself, would shout for joy at having attained its goal and wonder at the pinnacle of its own essence...
For what end is served by the expenditure of suns and planets and moons, of stars and milky ways, of comets and nebula, of worlds evolving and passing away, if at last a happy man does not involuntarily rejoice in his own existence?"
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. (1749-1832 AD)

Macrobiotics Macro= Great Bios= Life is the pursuit of living better , by understanding the order of the universe, aka yin and yang Macrobiotics is not just a diet, but you may have heard that people who practice Macrobiotics are often able to overcome life-threatening illnesses. This may be due to putting our bodies in balance, from more natural diet and lifestyle, which allows the body to heal itself. Most medical schools do not teach how to create health. That is why many doctors are unhealthy themselves, and only know how to mask symptoms , or open us up and cut out the offending part. Our bodies used to find balance more easily, but nowadays many of us spend little time outdoors, we are constantly barraged by radiation from communications, travel and other technologies, and we eat what tastes good, but can no longer be called food. Some very successful people have practiced Macrobiotics. Many of these people also mostly or fully vegan (eating and/or consuming no animal products ), as this is easier on our bodies, gentler on the planet, and reduces animal suffering.

Macrobiotics 30 years of a semi-macrobiotic lifestyle Of all the body-mind-spirit interests, enthusiasms and obsessions I have had over the years, macrobiotics has probably made the biggest impact. My initial encounter with it through a rather extreme paperback book in 1975 was the beginning of a journey of personal transformation that continues to this day, December 2006 at the time of writing. That first book I read talked about (amongst other things) personal freedom, universal compassion, everyday eating as preventative medicine, living long and happily and embracing misfortune, having all your dreams come true, regular sex until an old age, yin and yang in all of life and applied to the cooking of whole grains and vegetables. In retrospect rather curiously for a 14 year old, I was hooked and immediately began experimenting with the ideas and recipes in the book. My father and stepmother had to put up with rather a lot as I began my first culinary experiments, including burnt saucepans and flatulence! Both these problems were gradually resolved...

    What is the Macrobiotic Diet?
The word "macrobiotic" comes from Greek roots and means "long life". The macrobiotic diet and philosophy were developed by a Japanese educator named George Ohsawa, who believed that simplicity was the key to optimal health. The diet Ohsawa recommended included ten progressively restrictive stages. The last stage of Ohsawa's macrobiotic diet consisted only of brown rice and water. Due to its extreme restriction, Ohsawa's version of the macrobiotic diet is no longer recommended by macrobiotic diet counselors. Michio Kushi expanded on Ohsawa's macrobiotic theory and opened the Kushi Institute in Boston in 1978. Together with his wife Aveline, Kushi published many books on macrobiotics and was responsible for popularizing the diet in North America.

Macrobiotics The following explanation is excerpted from Pocket Guide to Macrobiotics by Carl Ferré.
Macrobiotics as it is known today is the result of the tireless work and vision of George Ohsawa (1893-1966). . . . While macrobiotic principles can be applied to all areas of life, . . . the macrobiotic approach to diet emphasizes whole grains and fresh vegetables, and for the most part avoids meat, dairy foods, and processed foods. The goal is to provide the body with essential nutrients so that it can function efficiently without loading it with toxins or excesses that must be eliminated or stored. And since the body is always adjusting to changes in the environment and to aging, its needs will always change as well. The idea is to continually balance the effects of foods eaten and other influences on the body, largely through diet, and to adjust to changes in a controlled and peaceful manner.
Very few people can make such a radical shift overnight. Instead, most people learn macrobiotics in stages. . . .
